Many\u2064 of these migrants and refugees\u200b lack the means to secure safe shelter\u200c within the state.<\/p>\n<p>While federal immigration policies are partly to \u200cblame for the\u200c crisis,\u200b Governor Healey also highlighted the burdensome barriers preventing migrants from obtaining work authorizations as a contributing factor. The lack of \u200bjob opportunities and affordable\u2063 housing in the state further exacerbate the problem.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>&#8220;Over \u2064the\u200b past six \u2062months, the \u200ddemand for emergency shelter has skyrocketed. In March of \u200cthis year, 68 families per day were coming to our field offices seeking assistance. By July, that number had \u2064jumped to over 100 families per day. Currently, \u2064shelter entries per month are more than double the number of entries per month during\u2062 the pandemic and roughly one-third higher than pre-pandemic \u2063levels. At the same time, the number of families leaving emergency shelter for safe, permanent housing has dwindled. The\u2064 number of families exiting\u2064 shelter has \u200bdeclined by nearly two-thirds since 2019.
