Robert\u200b McDonnell and\u200d his\u200c wife, Maureen, for \u201cparticipating in a scheme to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/jack-smith-went-after-a-republican-before-case-got-overturned-by-scotus-unanimously\/\" title=\"Jack Smith previously pursued legal action against a Republican, but the Supreme Court unanimously overturned the case.\">violate federal public corruption laws<\/a>,\u201d according to a DOJ \u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/former-virginia-governor-and-former-first-lady-convicted-public-corruption-charges\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The case made it all the way up to\u2063 the Supreme Court, where, in 2016, the convictions were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scotusblog.com\/case-files\/cases\/mcdonnell-v-united-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unanimously overturned<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>McDonnell and \u2064his wife were charged with unlawfully receiving gifts and loans\u200d from a donor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI basically set up meetings \u200dfor a businessman\u2062 in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/pornhub-shut-off-access-virginia-states-new-law-goes-effect-july-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Virginia<\/a>. I didn\u2019t even go\u2062 to the meetings.\u200b Spoke well of his\u200d business, which of\u2062 course I did for\u2062 thousands of companies promoting Virginia jobs. And because it \u200bwas a donor and had given gifts to us which were legal and reported, that was somehow a \u200ccrime,\u201d\u2062 the former governor said \u2063Wednesday on <a href=\"https:\/\/omny.fm\/shows\/oconnor-and-company\/08-02-23-former-virginia-governor-bob-mcdonnell-in\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WMAL-FM<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"firefly-embed\">\n<\/div>\n<p>Even the left-leaning Justice <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/leftist-turn-rage-former-heroes-ruth-bader-ginsburg-barack-obama-wake-roe-ruling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ruth\u200d Bader Ginsburg<\/a> agreed\u2064 with the decision\u200c to overturn the convictions, which McDonnell \u200dsaid\u200d \u201csays a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no \u2062doubt that this case is distasteful; it may be worse than that. But our concern is not with tawdry tales of\u2062 Ferraris, Rolexes, and\u2064 ball gowns. It is instead \u2063with the broader legal implications of the Government\u2019s boundless interpretation of the federal bribery \u2064statute,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/justice-roberts-goes-nuclear-activates-police-force-answerable-court\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chief Justice John Roberts<\/a> wrote in his <a href=\"https:\/\/casetext.com\/case\/united-states-v-mcdonnell-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">decision<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSetting up a \u2063meeting, calling another public official,\u2062 or hosting an event does not,\u200d standing alone, qualify as an \u2018official act,&#8217;\u201d Roberts added.<\/p>\n<p>During an appearance on \u201cLife, Liberty &#038;\u2062 Levin,\u201d \u200dMcDonnell <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/ex-virginia-gov-who-saw-conviction-by-jack-smith-thrown-out-says-hed-rather-win-than-get-it-right\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">asserted<\/a> that\u200c Smith is \u201coverzealous\u201d and\u200c seems to prioritize winning over getting\u2064 it right.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI \u2062think he doesn\u2019t do\u200b an honest look at the law to see if\u2062 the \u200bfacts apply to the law,\u201d the former governor said.<\/p>\n<p>Watch the latest video at \u2064 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\">foxnews.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Constitutional scholar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/trump-face-death-penalty-charge-brought-jack-smith\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jonathan Turley<\/a> believes there \u2064is \u201cless than meets the eye\u201d to Trump\u2019s latest indictment as well.<\/p>\n<p>Turley told Fox News on\u200b Aug. 1 that \u200cwhen he went through the material in the complaint that the First Amendment protects, \u201cit reduces much of \u2063this \u200bto a haiku.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany of the things that the prosecutor is charging here [are] protected speech,\u201d Turley said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe most jarring thing about this indictment is\u200b that it basically just accuses him of disinformation,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd this reminds me\u2063 of sort of the [McDonnell] complaint, where he\u2064 took the Virginia governor, got a conviction,\u200c and then it was unanimously overturned by the Supreme Court,\u201d Turley added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a bridge too far,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Watch the latest video at\u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\">foxnews.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p>One would think that after being called out\u2063 for his \u201cboundless\u201d \u200dinterpretation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/from-the-hague-to-obamas-irs-scandal-meet-jack-smith-the-new-special-counsel-to-investigate-trump\/\" title=\"From The Hague To Obama\u2019s IRS Scandal: Meet Jack Smith, The New Special Counsel To Investigate Trump\">federal bribery statute<\/a> by even the most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/am-i-dreaming-michael-knowles-pleasantly-surprised-as-democrat-nyc-mayor-eric-adams-bemoans-prayer-leaving-schools\/\" title=\"\u2018Am I Dreaming?\u2019: Michael Knowles Pleasantly Surprised As Democrat NYC Mayor Eric Adams Bemoans Prayer Leaving Schools\">left-leaning members<\/a> of the Supreme Court in the McDonnell case, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/judge-presiding-trump-documents-case-smacks-special-counsel-jack-smith\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Smith<\/a> would be more cautious about bringing indictments\u2064 that are clearly politically motivated \u2062and have no <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/mo-gov-under-fire-for-latest-gun-law\/\" title=\"Mo.
