But the issue is, I think what people in the \u200dmedia and elsewhere, they want to act like \u200csomehow this was \u200bjust like the perfect election. \u2062\u2026 I don\u2019t think\u2063 it was a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ron-desantis-acknowledges-trumps-2020-election-defeat-of-course-he-lost\/\" title=\"DeSantis admits Trump's loss in 2020 election.\">good-run election<\/a>. But I \u200dalso think \u200cRepublicans\u200b didn\u2019t fight back. You\u2019ve got to fight back when that is happening.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>He then went on to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SKMorefield\/status\/1688747038404415488?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">blame Trump<\/a> for basically everything that happened in the 2020 cycle: pandemic-inspired mass unrestricted mail-in voting and\u200c ballot-harvesting, \u201cZuckerbucks,\u201d the suppression of the Hunter Biden laptop story, \u200cand so on. Trump, he said,\u200b \u201cturned the government over to Fauci,\u201d citing the CARES Act, \u201cwhich funded \u200dmail-in \u200cballots across the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here we have what\u2019s now a\u200b familiar formula\u2064 from DeSantis: say whatever he \u2062thinks Trump voters \u2064want to hear, and then attack Trump. In this case, he acknowledged \u200bthe truth \u2014 that there\u2063 were major problems with 2020, that it was not a \u201cgood-run\u2063 election\u201d \u2014 but then blamed Trump for not \u2062fighting \u200dback, which is not just a ridiculous way\u200b to\u2064 characterize 2020 but \u2063seems like an answer almost designed in a lab to infuriate\u2063 every last Republican primary voter.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s an odd but observable pattern that seems to be the result of someone coaching him to\u200c attack or blame Trump in nearly every answer he gives, regardless of the\u2062 context or issue at hand, even in an <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/08\/07\/why-ron-desantis-is-nuts-for-agreeing-to-another-pre-taped-tv-interview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/does-desantis-know-what-time-it-is-didnt-sound-like-it-in-that-nbc-interview\/\" title=\"Is DeSantis Aware of the Time? Didn't Seem Like It in the NBC Interview.\">ill-advised pre-taped interview<\/a><\/a> with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/border-patrol-arrests-two-illegal-immigrants-from-yemen-on-fbi-terror-watch-list\/\" title=\"Border Patrol Arrests Two Illegal Immigrants From Yemen On FBI Terror Watch List\">corporate media outlet<\/a> like\u2063 NBC and a hack like \u200cBurns,\u2064 whom DeSantis should have known would\u200c present his answers in the worst \u200bpossible light.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"> <span class=\"jixYZKyGMoePnNkE8S0\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">NEW \u2013 DeSantis\u2062 on Trump: &#8220;Of course he lost&#8221; in 2020.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/nn0BjNNLmi\">pic.twitter.com\/nn0BjNNLmi<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Disclose.tv (@disclosetv) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/disclosetv\/status\/1688535619218112512?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 7, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/span> <\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<h2>The Importance of the\u200d 2020 Election<\/h2>\n<p>The\u200c plain truth is that no issue is more important for DeSantis (and \u200dthe entire GOP field) than the 2020 election, and if he wants to \u2064be the nominee he\u2019d better come up with a better answer than, \u201cYeah 2020 had \u200bsome problems but they were all Trump\u2019s fault.\u201d As <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/07\/11\/desantis-problem-isnt-trump-its-that-dems-rigged-the-last-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">I argued in these pages recently<\/a>,\u200b DeSantis has zero chance \u200dof winning the primary unless he acknowledges unequivocally that 2020 was rigged and vows to\u2063 go to\u200b war against the system that rigged it. He shouldn\u2019t be attacking Trump on\u200c this front, but the deep state-Democrat-Big Tech\u2063 machine that took Trump out. It\u2019s\u2064 his <em>only<\/em> path to the nomination, yet he has refused thus far to follow it.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s \u200bhard to overstate the enormity of the problem\u200d facing DeSantis here. It\u2019s not just the unprecedented changes to voting rules in 2020 but the \u200centire four years of deep state warfare against a sitting president\u200c that preceded \u2063it. Peachy Keenan put it well in <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KeenanPeachy\/status\/1688672700649426945?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a pair\u200d of tweets on Monday<\/a>. \u201cThe Obama government never ended and\u200d a\u200b GOP win in 2024 won\u2019t end it either,\u201d she \u200bwrote. \u201cThere was no\u200d peaceful transfer of power in 2016. Any candidate who doesn\u2019t\u200d understand this is disqualified from\u200d public office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, no candidate \u2064claiming to represent Republican voters in 2024 can do less than acknowledge, without the ritual throat-clearing demanded by \u200dthe regime press, that \u2062a coordinated effort to oust Trump \u2014 or, failing that, gut \u200dhis presidency\u200b \u2014 was underway in 2016 well before Trump even\u200b took office. Nothing quite like Russiagate\u200c has\u2063 ever \u200bhappened. It\u2019s not too much to call it one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/sen-rubio-durham-report-may-be-one-of-the-greatest-political-scandals-in-american-history\/\" title=\"Sen. Rubio: Durham Report May Be \u2018One Of The Greatest Political Scandals In American History\u2019\">greatest political scandals<\/a> of\u2064 the modern era.<\/p>\n<p>Nor has anything quite\u200d happened\u200b like 2020, in which Democrat-controlled states and activist judges \u200dused the \u2062pandemic as a pretext\u2063 to\u2064 enact unmonitored mass mail-in balloting and ballot harvesting, Mark Zuckerberg flooded local election offices with cash to bolster Democrat get-out-the-vote operations, and the corporate media and \u2063Big Tech colluded with the deep state to suppress the Hunter Biden laptop story, which we\u200b now know was merely \u2063a small part of the much larger story of Biden family \u200dcorruption.<\/p>\n<p>All those \u200cthings cannot fairly be laid \u200dat Trump\u2019s\u200b feet, and DeSantis is making a huge mistake in trying to do so. At \u200dthe very least, two-time Trump voters will never accept the \u200cargument. He should focus instead on using major platforms like sit-down interviews with corporate media outlets to <em>highlight<\/em> and <em>explain<\/em> what \u200cwent wrong, in both 2020 and 2016, \u2064and how if\u200b we don\u2019t fix this we\u2019ll never have another free and\u200d fair election in America. That\u2019s\u200d a message that could, if delivered skillfully, reach an audience even beyond GOP\u2064 primary\u2064 voters.<\/p>\n<p>But the <em>least<\/em> any \u200dRepublican can do, if he or\u2063 she hopes to\u200b represent the half of\u2064 America that more\u2062 or less agrees \u200bwith this\u2064 analysis,\u2063 is simply and clearly acknowledge\u2063 what happened \u2062and vow to ensure it never happens again.
