Now, they are finally seeing some justice.<\/p>\n<p>The city recently\u200c agreed \u200cto a $4.9 million \u2062settlement, promising to \u200ccompensate 84\u200d individuals\u2063 who \u2062were arrested after the officer, Jason Stockley, was \u2062found not guilty in the death of Anthony Lamar Smith. The first checks were distributed on Friday, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/saint-louis-protests-police-settlement-b050f7227746b19171f58f090f761a2e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Associated \u200bPress<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Stockley had pursued Smith after suspecting a \u2064drug deal, ultimately shooting him to death. The ruling in Stockley&#8217;s case sparked riots,\u2062 resulting in injuries \u200cto 11 police officers and damage to the home of then-St. Louis Mayor Lyda Krewson.<\/p>\n<p>However, \u200dthe protesters fought back, filing a \u2062 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/st-louis-prosecutor-pursued-mccloskeys-refused-show-murder-hearing-gets-savaged-judge-abandoned-duty-city-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lawsuit<\/a> against the city. They argued that the police tactic used, known as &#8220;kettling,&#8221; was unjust \u200cas it involved surrounding and arresting everyone in a given \u200barea.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the \u2064group settlement, \u2063three <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/st-louis-blm-rioters-receive-shares-of-4-9-million-settlement-over-mass-arrests-following-2017-officer-acquittal-in-smith-death\/\" title=\"St. Louis BLM rioters get portion of .9M settlement for mass arrests after 2017 officer acquittal in Smith case.\">individuals filed individual lawsuits<\/a> and settled for $85,000 each. The payouts in the group \u200dsettlement will range from $28,000 to over $150,000. The city, however, denied any wrongdoing in the settlement agreement, as reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksdk.com\/article\/news\/local\/plantiffs-who-sued-st-louis-following-jason-stockley-protests-pick-up-settlement\/63-05fbaffd-75de-4c65-973e-b0c4512c4508\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KSDK<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One recipient of the settlement, Dekita Roberts, initially\u200c thought the call she received about her payment was a scam. She\u2064 expressed \u2063her shock and surprise, stating that her goal is to invest the money and secure a better future for her children, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stltoday.com\/news\/local\/crime-courts\/settlement-checks-disbursed-after-mass-kettling-arrest-during-2017-protest-in-st-louis\/article_0f0bbff8-330a-11ee-8a89-e72e0cddd4f3.html#tracking-source=home-top-story\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">St. Louis Post-Dispatch<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>St. Louis has now \u200bpaid over $10 million in total due to the\u2063 actions\u2063 of the police on the night of Stockley&#8217;s acquittal. This includes compensation of $5 million to Luther Hall, a black undercover officer who was \u2063assaulted\u2064 by fellow officers, \u2062and $115,000 to a Kansas City filmmaker who \u2064claimed he\u2063 was beaten and pepper-sprayed during the protests, according to the AP.<\/p>\n<p>While \u200bthe settlement brings some closure, attorney Javad Khazaeli criticized the slow pace of the payouts, stating that other cities \u2063have completed similar processes and trials within a year and a half.
