Ron DeSantis (R-FL) \u2063in Chariton, Kathy Harvey, 66, was one of \u2063the majority of Republicans who do not consider Trump to be\u2064 guilty of any wrongdoing concerning Jan. 6, expressed disappointment in Pence for \u200bnot supporting Trump.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t know that I can believe what Mr. Pence says,&#8221; the Chariton musician said last\u200b week. &#8220;I really don&#8217;t trust him. His\u200d actions do not speak like his words \u2064do, so I&#8217;m not very favorable right now about Mr. Pence.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Iowa presents Pence&#8217;s best\u200b opportunity of \u2062the \u200cfour first-in-the-nation nominating contests because of the state&#8217;s evangelical \u200bcommunity. But as other candidates underscore their faith and potential caucusgoers are still skeptical of the former vice president after Jan. 6, he has not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/iowa-republican-caucusgoers-remain-skeptical-about-pence-amid-trump-indictment\/\" title=\"Iowa GOP caucusgoers doubt Pence amidst Trump indictment.\">polled passed single digits<\/a>. Trump averages \u206250% in Iowa to DeSantis&#8217;s 17%, Sen. Tim Scott&#8217;s (R-SC) 8%, biotechnology entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswarmy&#8217;s 4%, and former \u200cU.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley and Pence&#8217;s 4%, according to RealClearPolitics.<\/p>\n<p>Harvey&#8217;s friend Angela Rich, 43, contended evangelicals want &#8220;somebody who\u200d is \u200ctrue, not just in name.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Not like, &#8216;Oh, you&#8217;re an evangelical. We&#8217;ll automatically\u2062 support you,'&#8221; the Chariton stay-at-home mother said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I try to look at their\u2014&#8221; Harvey added.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Actions,&#8221; Rich finished.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Before the DeSantis event, Greg Carlton, \u206470, described Pence as &#8220;woke&#8221; and \u2064alleged \u2062the vice president, without evidence, was leveraging his Christianity despite his long public record of discussing his faith.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Anybody who uses the Lord to gain \u200dsomething, they&#8217;re not \u200dChristian,&#8221; the \u200dChariton retiree said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Behind them, Brad Reese, 61,\u200b was more diplomatic, calling \u2063Pence a &#8220;good man&#8221; with\u200b &#8220;very good morals&#8221; but conceding that \u2064the vice president would not &#8220;gain traction&#8221;\u200b with him because he\u200d has\u2063 &#8220;become very wishy-washy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The ones that would commit and come out and openly\u2063 tell people that\u2062 if they were elected, that they would pardon President Trump for what&#8217;s going on\u200b \u2014 because what\u2064 they&#8217;re \u2062doing to President Trump is \u2014 it&#8217;s unconscionable what \u200cthey&#8217;re \u200ddoing\u2062 to \u2064him compared to what they do to \u200dsay, Hunter Biden, and Mike Pence, he would not commit to that,&#8221; the Chariton farmer said. &#8220;He said, &#8216;Well, we&#8217;ll just \u2064have to \u200csee what happens.&#8217; I didn&#8217;t care for that.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But Pence does have some support in Iowa. Before a Scott town hall in Ankeny, Dean Lyons, 58, repeated that Pence &#8220;saved \u2064America&#8221; because he did not &#8220;put up with Trump&#8217;s crap&#8221; and &#8220;do what Trump wanted him to do.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;He stood up when\u200b he could&#8217;ve folded \u2063like all these others who folded,&#8221; the Grand Junction retiree said. &#8220;I&#8217;ve been around long enough. I&#8217;ve seen\u2062 it when I was around [former President Barack] Obama in &#8217;08 how \u200dhe didn&#8217;t, and then he caught on. Look at [President Joe] Biden. He didn&#8217;t catch on until he was in South Carolina. So I&#8217;m not worried. It&#8217;s still quite a ways away.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Lyons&#8217;s advice to Pence six months before the caucuses\u200d is to keep speaking with Iowans.<\/p>\n<p>But with Trump&#8217;s legal problems overshadowing the Republican primary, Rhonda Huegerich, 53, admitted she is &#8220;ambivalent&#8221; about Pence, particularly with the breadth \u200band depth of the field.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I&#8217;m \u200dlike &#8216;meh,'&#8221; the Norwalk project manager said.\u200c &#8220;It&#8217;s not like I don&#8217;t like the guy \u2062or anything, but I just don&#8217;t feel like he&#8217;s strong enough necessarily to take that office and really take charge.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Pence&#8217;s\u2064 campaign \u200bannounced Thursday more than 7,400 donors made \u200dcontributions to his bid on Wednesday \u200dalone, inching closer\u2062 to the\u200c Republican\u200c National Committee&#8217;s 40,000 donor requirement, with 200 unique donors needed in 20 or more states.
