In \u200dthe capital, coup leaders appeared at a stadium rally where a chicken decorated in the colors of former colonizer France was beheaded, \u2064to cheers.<\/p>\n<p>Neighboring \u200dNigeria\u2019s\u200c Senate has pushed back against the plan by the \u2063<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/south-african-omicron-discoverer-laments-knee-jerk-biden-style-travel-bans\/\" title=\"South African Omicron Discoverer Laments 'Knee-Jerk' Biden-Style Travel Bans\">regional bloc<\/a> known as ECOWAS, urging <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ap-top-nigerian-politician-convicted-horrific-organ-harvesting-plot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nigeria\u2019s<\/a> president, the bloc\u2019s current chair, on Saturday to explore\u2062 options other than the use of force.<\/p>\n<p>ECOWAS can still move ahead, as final decisions are made by consensus\u200b by member states, but the \u200dwarning on the eve of the deadline raised questions about the intervention\u2019s \u2062fate.<\/p>\n<p>The July 26 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/war-drums-african-nations-threaten-use-force-coup-fails-reinstate-president\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">coup<\/a>, \u2062in\u2062 which mutinous soldiers\u200b installed Gen. Abdourahmane Tchiani \u200bas \u2064head of state, \u200cadds another layer of complexity to West Africa\u2019s Sahel\u200d region that\u2019s struggling with military takeovers, spreading Islamic extremism and a shift by some states toward Russia and its proxy, the Wagner mercenary group.<\/p>\n<p>Niger\u2019s ousted President Mohamed Bazoum said he is held \u201chostage\u201d by \u200dthe mutinous soldiers. An ECOWAS delegation was unable to meet with Tchiani, who analysts have asserted led \u200dthe coup\u2064 to avoid\u2064 being fired.\u200c Now the junta has reached out to Wagner for assistance while severing security \u2064ties \u2063with former colonizer France.<\/p>\n<p>Algeria \u2064and Chad, non-ECOWAS neighbors\u200c with strong militaries in the region, have said they oppose the use of \u2064force or won\u2019t \u200cintervene militarily, and neighboring Mali and Burkina Faso \u2014 both \u200drun by \u2062juntas \u2014 have said an intervention \u200bwould be a \u201cdeclaration of war\u201d against\u2062 them, too.<\/p>\n<p>It was \u2062not immediately clear on Sunday what ECOWAS will do\u2063 next.\u2064 Thousands of people\u200b at Sunday\u2019s rally in Niger\u2019s capital, Niamey, cheered the coup \u200dleaders\u2019\u200c appearance and expressed defiance\u2063 against both the ECOWAS threat \u2062and France\u2019s long\u2062 presence in the region. Some waved Russian flags.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will all stand and\u2063 fight as \u2062one people,\u201d declared\u200d one of the junta leaders, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Toumba. \u201cWe \u2062are asking you to stay mobilized.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hours before Sunday\u2019s deadline, hundreds of youth joined <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/aocs-constituents-rise-security-force-intervenes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">security \u200dforces<\/a> in the darkened streets in the capital to stand guard at a dozen roundabouts until morning, checking \u2064cars for weapons and heeding the junta\u2019s call to \u200bwatch\u200b out for foreign intervention and \u2062spies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m here\u200d to\u2064 support the military.\u200b We are against (the regional bloc). We will fight to the end. \u200dWe do\u200b not agree with\u200c what France is \u2063doing against us. We \u2062are done\u2064 with\u200d colonization,\u201d said Ibrahim Nudirio, one of\u200c the residents on patrol.<\/p>\n<p>Some passing \u2063cars honked in support. Some people called for solidarity \u200damong \u2064African nations.<\/p>\n<p>ECOWAS shouldn\u2019t have\u2063 given the junta a one-week deadline to reinstate\u200d Bazoum but \u2063rather only up to 48 hours, said \u200dPeter Pham, former U.S. special envoy \u2064for West\u200b Africa\u2019s Sahel region and a \u2064distinguished \u2063fellow at the \u200dAtlantic Council. \u201cNow it\u2019s dragged out, which gives the \u200bjunta time to entrench itself,\u201d \u2063he said.<\/p>\n<p>The most \u200bfavorable scenario \u2064for an intervention would be a force coming in with the \u2063help of those on the inside, he said.<\/p>\n<p>The coup is a major \u2062blow to the\u200d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/former-air-force-intelligence-officer-drops-bombshell-know-exact-locations-ufos-united-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">United States<\/a> and allies who saw Niger as the last \u200bmajor counterterrorism partner in the Sahel, a vast area\u200d south of the Sahara Desert where jihadists linked to al-Qaida and the Islamic State group have been expanding their \u2062range and beginning to threaten coastal\u2063 states like Benin, Ghana and Togo.<\/p>\n<p>The United States, France and European countries\u2063 have poured hundreds of millions of dollars of military assistance into Niger. France has 1,500 \u200csoldiers in the country,\u2063 though their fate is\u200c now in question. The \u200cU.S.\u2063 has 1,100 \u2063military personnel also in Niger where they operate an important drone base in the city of Agadez.<\/p>\n<p>While Niger\u2019s coup leaders have claimed \u2062they acted because of growing insecurity, conflict incidents decreased by nearly 40 percent \u2063in the country compared to the\u2064 previous six-month period, according \u200bto the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data project. That\u2019s in \u200dcontrast \u2064to surging attacks in Mali, which has kicked out French forces and partnered\u2062 with Wagner, and \u2064Burkina Faso, which has gotten rid of French forces as well.<\/p>\n<p>Some in Niger quietly expressed concerns about the coup.\u200b One official, \u2064who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to comment, said many people want \u2063Bazoum\u200b resinstated but were afraid to say so for fear of\u200c retaliation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt present, the population \u200cis living \u2063in total psychosis,\u201d \u200cthe official said.<\/p>\n<p>The uncertainty in Niger is\u2062 worsening daily life for some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/eu-medicine-regulator-warns-of-blood-clots-with-astrazeneca-vaccine\/\" title=\"EU medicine regulator warns of blood clots with Astrazeneca vaccine\">25 million people<\/a> in \u200done \u2064of \u2062the world\u2019s poorest countries. Food\u200c prices are rising after ECOWAS imposed economic and travel sanctions following the coup. Nigeria, which supplies up \u200bto 90 percent of the electricity in Niger, has cut off some of the supply.<\/p>\n<p>Humanitarian groups \u2064in Niger\u2062 have warned of\u200b \u201cdevastating effects\u201d on the lives of over 4.4 million people needing aid.<\/p>\n<p>Some struggling\u200d residents said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ap-4-air-crew-members-missing-australian-army-helicopter-ditched-off-australias-coast\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">military<\/a> \u200dintervention is not the\u200c answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust \u200cto eat is a problem for us.
