Britain Used to Ease US \u2063Into \u200cWWII &#8211; \u200cPart Two<\/h2>\n<p><em>This story follows part one\u2062 of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/dont-trust-ukraine-ally-using-propaganda-trick-britain-used-ease-us-wwii-part-one\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Don\u2019t Trust Ukraine<\/a>,\u201d \u200cwhich walks through the history of information operations weaponized against the United \u200cStates by its \u200callies.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Today, as the war in \u200dUkraine continues, disinformation operations continue as well, fielded by Ukrainian officials in concert with pro-Ukraine activists, lobbyists, and diaspora organizations.<\/p>\n<p>These \u200ccampaigns \u2062aim to manipulate and shape American opinion, with hopes of convincing\u2062 the \u2064U.S. to join \u2062a war that \u200dcould turn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/putin-renews-nuclear-threats-says-russia-thinking-adopting-americas-nuclear-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nuclear,<\/a> threatening\u200c American \u2062prosperity and security.<\/p>\n<p>These operations aren\u2019t always knowingly coordinated.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, they all aim to \u2062manipulate Americans into\u2062 giving \u2062lethal aid\u2062 to Ukraine, moving\u200c the U.S. closer to a clash with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/us-uk-accidentally-emailed-sensitive-info-russian-ally-typo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Russia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Now, one \u2064might dislike the term \u201coperations,\u201d preferring \u201cpersuasion\u201d because\u2062 Ukraine might be \u2064a friendly\u200b country or ally.<\/p>\n<p>However, one man\u2019s \u201cpersuasion\u201d is another man\u2019s \u201cinformation operation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In as much as the phenomenon described includes the \u201cplanned use of propaganda and other psychological operations\u201d to alter \u201cthe \u2063opinions, emotions, attitudes, and behavior,\u201d it qualifies as an information operation \u2014 one \u2064must call\u2064 a spade a\u2064 spade.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Ukraine\u2019s \u200dDisinformation\u2063 Operation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Since the February 2022 invasion, Ukraine has expanded\u2062 the number \u2064of lobbyists it employs in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>The Quincy Institute for Responsible\u2064 Statecraft,\u200d in a <a href=\"https:\/\/quincyinst.org\/report\/the-lobbying-battle-before-the-war-russian-and-ukrainian-influence-in-the-u-s\/#by-the-numbers-russian-and-ukrainian-influence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">July 2022\u2064 report<\/a>,\u00a0noted\u00a0that Ukrainian lobbying activity in the \u200cU.S. exceeds that\u2064 of Saudi Arabia by four times.<\/p>\n<p>Ukrainian information operations are \u200dassisted by the involvement\u200c of organizations like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.razomforukraine.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Razom<\/a> \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mossrobeson__\/status\/1682474298844356610\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">called<\/a> \u200cthe Ukrainian \u200d\u201cAIPAC\u201d by pro-Ukraine activist Paul Massaro\u2064 \u2014 and the diaspora group the <a href=\"https:\/\/ucca.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ukrainian Congress Committee\u2064 of America<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>These organizations call for further support of Ukraine at the risk of escalation \u200band nuclear war.<\/p>\n<p>This includes, for example,\u200d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UkrCongComAm\/status\/1673842631070105600?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bringing<\/a> Ukraine into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/zelenskyy-fumes-natos-unprecedented-absurd-decision-ukraine-membership\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NATO<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Just\u200c like the British during\u2063 World War II, the Ukrainian government \u2064and its lobbyists rely on atrocity propaganda.<\/p>\n<p>They also inflate\u2062 the importance of Ukraine to the U.S. in an attempt to get\u200d the U.S. to sacrifice its interests \u2063in staying\u200d out \u2063of \u2064the war.<\/p>\n<p>As for disinformation and misinformation in such operations, one example stands out.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Russian Missile Attack \u200bThat Never Happened<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In November 2022,\u200b a missile <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/ukraines-zelenskiy-says-russian-missiles-hit-poland-significant-escalation-2022-11-15\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">struck<\/a> a Polish village on the\u2064 border with Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>Without offering evidence, President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/zelenskyy-blames-west-ukraines-failure-start-counteroffensive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Volodymyr Zelenskyy<\/a> \u2062 and other\u200c Ukrainian officials quickly claimed \u200bit \u200dwas a Russian\u200c attack on\u2064 Poland \u2062\u2014 \u2064a\u2063 serious allegation considering that a Russian attack could lead to NATO\u200d involvement in the war.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe longer Russia\u2062 feels impunity, \u2063the more threats there will be to anyone within reach of Russian missiles. To fire missiles at NATO \u2062territory! This is a Russian \u2064missile attack\u200c on collective security! This is a very significant \u200descalation. We must \u2064act,\u201d Zelenskyy \u200csaid in a video address, Reuters\u00a0reported at the time.<\/p>\n<p>As\u200d one would expect, accusations aimed\u2064 at Russia spread like\u2064 wildfire, with pro-Ukraine activists jumping on the bandwagon, seizing the opportunity to\u2064 call for more aid to Ukraine\u2062 and involvement in the war.<\/p>\n<p>It was later \u2063discovered \u2063that it was \u2062 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ap-turns-deadly-missile-hit-poland-likely-not-fired-russia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">not a Russian\u2064 missile<\/a> \u2062that fell in \u2064Poland but one used in \u2063Ukrainian air \u2062defense, <a href=\"https:\/\/responsiblestatecraft.org\/2022\/11\/16\/how-a-lightly-sourced-ap-story-almost-set-of-world-war-iii\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">embarrassing<\/a> Ukrainian officials who jumped \u2062the gun \u2063in\u2064 spreading misinformation.<\/p>\n<p>Some Ukrainian officials went so far as to call\u2063 the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DmytroKuleba\/status\/1592632386751434752\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">truth<\/a> a Russian conspiracy theory \u2014\u2062 a common tactic \u2062used by Ukrainian activists to stifle criticism or truths that don\u2019t align with \u2062Ukrainian narratives.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, Western leaders did not take the escalation bait laid out by pro-Ukraine activists, and Ukrainian officials failed to escalate\u200d the \u2062conflict.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>America\u2019s \u200cUnique Vulnerability<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>America\u2019s vulnerability to such \u2063information\u200d operations is exacerbated by the fact that it is a nation \u200cof immigrants.<\/p>\n<p>With people coming \u200cfrom so many \u2063different countries\u200d and with assimilation being a\u200d process that takes\u2062 time, international \u2064issues risk becoming domestic issues.<\/p>\n<p>Taking \u2064advantage of this, diaspora lobby groups work to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/25766257\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">harness<\/a> American power to settle Old\u200c World issues, even if such settlements and \u200cinterventions come at a\u200b great economic and diplomatic cost\u200c to the country.<\/p>\n<p>Politicians and \u2062members of Congress often acquiesce to such groups, championing some of \u200dtheir \u2064causes, out of fear of <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6215770\/jd-vance-ukraine-ohio-senate-race\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">alienating\u2062 voters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>America\u2019s\u200b allies, who\u200b want to prevent\u2063 the country from pursuing \u200cits own\u200c interests via moves unfavorable to them, \u2064often\u200d work\u2062 with\u2064 such diaspora groups \u200dto thwart \u2063such America-first initiatives, as\u200d Mark Katz <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalinterest.org\/feature\/getting-smart-about-dividing-america%E2%80%99s-adversaries-206671\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">noted<\/a> in\u2064 his op-ed for National Interest.<\/p>\n<p>Such pressures \u2014 not present to the same\u2062 extent in America\u2019s peer competitors \u200c\u2014 often make \u2063American foreign policy inflexible, if \u200dnot \u200dparalyzed, in pursuing America\u2019s own strictly\u200c defined self-interests.<\/p>\n<p>It is no\u200c surprise that the founding fathers, \u2062including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/op-ed-george-washingtons-message-disheartened-soldiers-applies-perfectly-trump-indictment-era\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">George \u200cWashington<\/a> and \u2064 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/monticello-visitors-shocked-discovering-tour-jeffersons-home-woke-new-spin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thomas Jefferson<\/a>, \u2063warned\u200d against over-involvement in\u200b European affairs and\u200b permanent alliances. They foresaw\u2063 the \u200cdanger that would come when each immigrant group lobbies for what is good for\u200b their countries\u200c of origin while neglecting what is \u2062best for America\u2019s interests strictly\u200d defined.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>How to Fix the Problem<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>If \u2064the U.S. government and the American\u200d people don\u2019t fix\u2064 this vulnerability, one would have an America that\u200d solves everyone else\u2019s\u200b problems but not its own, at the risk \u2063of exacerbating its enormous debt.<\/p>\n<p>Fixing \u200dthis vulnerability \u200cinvolves responding to information operations by friendly countries in the same way we would respond \u200cto adversaries.<\/p>\n<p>Congress must pass laws that prohibit even friendly foreign \u2062governments from \u200chiring \u200clobbyists\u2063 in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>If a country wants to raise its concerns to the U.S., it must do so \u2063through the appropriate diplomatic channels, \u2063not the\u200d back-door manipulation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/reports-congress-members-families-receive-covid-treatment-government-discourages-average-citizens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Congressional members<\/a> and the American people.<\/p>\n<p>Congress must also prohibit\u200b diaspora organizations that \u2063regularly liaise\u2062 with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/scottish-parliament-rejects-proposal-to-investigate-trumps-finances\/\" title=\"Scottish Parliament Rejects Proposal to Investigate Trump\u2019s Finances\">foreign officials<\/a> and overwhelmingly lobby for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/in-line-for-senior-job-at-state-sanders-aide-accuses-biden-of-illegal-military-action\/\" title=\"In Line For Senior Job at State, Sanders Aide Accuses Biden of Illegal Military Action\">foreign policy issues<\/a> from making campaign contributions.<\/p>\n<p>Such a step is necessary to \u200c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/dont-trust-ukraine-ally-using-same-propaganda-trick-britain-used-to-ease-us-into-wwii-part-two\/\" title=\"Beware Ukraine: 'Ally' Employing WWII Propaganda Tactic - Part Two\">ensure foreign interests don\u2019<\/a>t influence \u200cAmerican elections, friendly or not, through indirect \u2063means.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. government must also\u200d publicly call out and criticize\u2062 attempts by foreign governments, even friendly ones, to manipulate\u200d the American public and warn citizens of\u2064 it.<\/p>\n<p>Lastly,\u2062 there are many things that the law cannot fix, either because they are hard to regulate\u200d or because members of Congress won\u2019t pass such\u2063 laws\u2064 because it \u200dhurts the\u2063 coffers of essential donors and their own interests\u200d in power maximization.<\/p>\n<p>In these areas, nothing can substitute caution.<\/p>\n<p>Just as Americans need to be\u200d wary\u2064 of information operations conducted by adversaries, it is essential to be mindful \u2062of those\u200c by friends.<\/p>\n<p>The \u200cpost\u2064 <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/dont-trust-ukraine-ally-using-propaganda-trick-britain-used-ease-us-wwii-part-two\/\">Don&#8217;t Trust Ukraine: &#8216;Ally&#8217; Using Same Propaganda Trick Britain Used to Ease US Into WWII &#8211; Part\u200c Two<\/a> appeared \u200cfirst on <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\">The \u200dWestern Journal<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The sequel to &#8220;Don&#8217;t Trust Ukraine&#8221; explores the ongoing disinformation operations in the war-torn country.
