(AP Photo\/Marta Lavandier)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>OAN\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oann.com\/tag\/geraldyn-berry\">Geraldyn Berry<\/a><\/h2>\n<h3>5:40 PM \u2013 Friday, August 4, 2023<\/h3>\n<p>Ballistics experts fired at least 140 bullets at Marjory Stoneman \u2063Douglas High School on \u200cFriday in a significant reenactment of\u200c the tragic 2018\u2063 Parkland massacre \u200das part of an\u2064 ongoing lawsuit that accuses former Broward Sheriff\u2019s Deputy \u2063Scot Peterson of failing \u2062in his duty to protect the \u2063victims.<\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1\" style=\"min-width: 320px; min-height: 50px;  text-align: center;\">  \t<script>  \t\tgoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1'); });  \t<\/script>  <\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot__ad-label\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>Democrat Congressman Jared Moskowitz \u2064(D-Fla.) and Republican Congressman Mario Diaz Balart (R-Fla.) led a \u200bcongressional delegation party on a tour \u200cof the facility prior\u200d to the reenactment. The reenactment aimed to capture the auditory experience Peterson \u200bhad during the \u2062six-minute\u200c attack that left 17 dead, and \u206417 wounded.<\/p>\n<p>Nikolas Cruz,\u2063 a former Stoneman Douglas student, was found guilty in 2021 and was sentenced to life in prison for carrying out the horrific attack.<\/p>\n<p>Tony Montalto, president of Stand with\u200d Parkland, a group\u2062 representing \u200cmost of the families affected \u2062by the tragedy, emphasized\u200b that Peterson\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oann.com\/newsroom\/parkland-shooting-school-security-officer-scot-peterson-found-not-guilty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">acquittal<\/a> on criminal \u2064charges does not absolve him of his failure to take appropriate action during the attack.\u2062 Montalto\u2019s daughter, Gina,\u200c was among\u2064 those who\u2064 tragically lost their lives that day.<\/p>\n<p>The reenactment began\u200b at the\u2063 same \u200bentrance the shooter had used \u2063to enter. It then moved in the same direction during the\u2064 six-minute assault.<\/p>\n<p>During the reenactment, technicians stationed\u2063 outside a three-story\u200d classroom building meticulously recording the sound of gunfire to replicate the conditions Peterson encountered that fateful day. \u200bPeterson claimed to not have heard all the\u200c shots. Therefore, he stated that \u2062he could not have discerned their source due to echoes. Peterson has maintained that he would have charged into the building had he known the shooter\u2019s location.<\/p>\n<p>It is alleged that the former deputy had approached\u200b the \u2064building\u2019s\u2062 entrance, drew his weapon, but ultimately decided to stand by\u200b an \u200dadjoining building for 40 minutes while making radio calls.<\/p>\n<p>As the reenactment unfolded, Robert Maher, a professor \u200bfrom\u200c Montana State University with expertise in gunfire recordings, noted that the sharpness of gunshots\u2063 in person can be challenging to\u2062 replicate accurately \u2062through speakers. Nevertheless, the reenactment may still provide \u200dvaluable insights into the loudness and direction of the shots as Peterson perceived them in\u2063 proximity to the sealed classroom building.<\/p>\n<p>The families of the victims who have filed the lawsuit contend that Peterson was aware\u200c of Cruz\u2019s whereabouts but chose to retreat out of cowardice and in violation of his duty to protect the students and staff. While Peterson was acquitted of felony child\u2064 neglect and other criminal charges in June, the burden of\u200b proof is lower \u200bin\u200c a civil lawsuit,\u200d allowing the reenactment to proceed.<\/p>\n<p>The experts conducting the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/parkland-school-shooting-reenacted-with-live-gunfire\/\" title=\"Live gunfire used to reenact Parkland school shooting.\">reenactment \u200dreportedly fired live\u200c ammunition<\/a> from the same positions as\u2063 Cruz, using an identical AR-15-style semiautomatic \u2062rifle. The bullets will \u200bbe\u2062 safely captured to avoid any risks.<\/p>\n<p>University\u200c of Miami law professor Tamara Lave explained that Judge Carol-Lisa Phillips would consider whether\u2063 the reenactment fairly and accurately depicts \u200dwhat\u2062 Peterson heard when deciding whether the recording will be allowed as evidence during the trial.\u200b The \u2062goal is \u2062to offer insights into Peterson\u2019s actions and decisions during the tragic event.<\/p>\n<p>In preparation for the reenactment, Parkland authorities sent \u2064warnings to residents to prevent panic in response to the\u2062 sound of gunshots. Additionally, Eagles\u2019 Haven, \u200ba community \u2064wellness center\u2063 established after the shooting,\u2062 arranged several programs on Friday, including yoga, tai chi, a drum circle, meditation, and food to facilitate discussions \u200bamong those seeking emotional support. <\/p>\n<p>As \u200bthe community braces for the reenactment\u2019s emotional impact, \u2062the \u2064Parkland school district\u200b has announced\u200b its intention to begin demolishing the building after the event.
