Version: 4.0.47--><h2>Cyberattack Targets Hospitals, Shuts Down\u200d Emergency Rooms in 5 States<\/h2>\n<p>Hospitals and clinics \u2063in several states on Friday began the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/rick-santorum-its-time-to-invest-in-real-infrastructure\/\" title=\"Rick Santorum: It's Time to Invest in Real Infrastructure\">time-consuming process<\/a> of recovering from a cyberattack that disrupted their \u2063computer systems, forcing some emergency rooms to shut down and ambulances to be diverted.<\/p>\n<p>Medical facilities \u200cfrom coast to coast were affected, including California, Texas, \u200bConnecticut, Rhode Island, and Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<p>Many primary care services at facilities run by Prospect Medical Holdings remained closed on Friday as security \u200dexperts worked to determine the extent of the problem and resolve it.<\/p>\n<p>John Riggi, the American Hospital \u200bAssociation\u2019s national advisor for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/radical-gay-furries-hackers-revenge-spree-reaches-5-states-objections-child-mutilation-bans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cybersecurity<\/a> and risk, said the recovery process can often take weeks, with hospitals in the\u200d meantime reverting to paper systems and humans to \u2062do things such as monitor equipment\u2063 and run records between departments.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThese \u200bare threat-to-life crimes, which risk not only the safety of the patients within \u200bthe hospital but also risk the safety\u2063 of the entire community that depends on the availability of\u2064 that emergency department to be there,\u201d Riggi said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The latest \u201cdata security incident\u201d began Thursday at facilities operated \u200dby Prospect, which is based \u200din <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/bad-news-newsom-california-exodus-results-340-million-tax-revenue-loss-amid-32-billion-deficit-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">California<\/a> \u2064 and has hospitals and clinics there and in Texas, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cUpon learning of this, we took our systems offline\u200b to protect them \u2062and launched an investigation with the\u2063 help of third-party cybersecurity specialists,\u201d the company said in a statement Friday. \u201cWhile \u200bour investigation continues, we are focused on addressing the pressing needs of our patients as we work diligently\u200d to return to normal operations as quickly as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/hunter-bidens-law-license-administratively-suspended-state-connecticut\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Connecticut<\/a>,\u2064 the emergency departments at\u200c Manchester \u200dMemorial and Rockville General Hospital were closed for much of Thursday \u200cand patients were diverted to other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/two-dead-multiple-injured-after-las-vegas-stabbing-attack\/\" title=\"Two Dead, Multiple Injured After Las Vegas Stabbing Attack\">nearby medical centers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWe have a\u200b national Prospect team\u200b working and evaluating the \u200cimpact of \u2062the attack on all of the organizations,\u201d Jillian Menzel, chief operating \u200bofficer for the Eastern Connecticut Health Network, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The \u2064 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/missing-arizona-teen-flees-36-year-old-man-fbi-descends-montana-apartment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FBI<\/a> in Connecticut issued a statement saying it is\u200d working with \u201claw \u2063enforcement partners and the victim\u200b entities\u201d but could not comment further on an ongoing investigation.<\/p>\n<p>Elective surgeries, outpatient \u2063appointments, blood drives, and other services were suspended, and while the emergency departments reopened late Thursday, many primary care services were closed on Friday, according to the Eastern Connecticut\u200c Health Network, which \u200bruns the facilities. Patients were being\u2063 contacted individually,\u200d according to the network\u2019s website.<\/p>\n<p>Similar disruptions also\u2062 were reported at other facilities system-wide.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWaterbury Hospital\u200b is following downtime procedures, including the use of paper records, until the situation is resolved,\u201d spokeswoman Lauresha Xhihani said in a statement. \u201cWe are working closely with IT security experts to resolve it as quickly as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In Pennsylvania, the \u200battack affected services at facilities including the Crozer-Chester Medical Center in Upland, Taylor Hospital in Ridley Park, Delaware County Memorial Hospital in Drexel Hill, and Springfield Hospital in Springfield, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/philadelphia-shooting-suspect-told-police-killing-spree-help-fight-gun-violence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Philadelphia Inquirer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In California,\u200b the company has seven hospitals in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/alaska-mayor-proposes-solution-homeless-city-one-way-ticket-los-angeles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Los Angeles<\/a> and Orange\u200b counties, including two behavioral health facilities and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/cyberattack-targets-hospitals-shuts-down-emergency-rooms-in-5-states\/\" title=\"Hospitals hit by cyberattack, ERs closed in 5 states.\">130-bed acute care hospital<\/a> in Los Angeles,\u200c according to Prospect\u2019s website. Messages sent\u2064 to representatives for these hospitals were not immediately returned.<\/p>\n<p>Globally, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/california-republican-assemblyman-calls-for-corruption-investigation-into-newsom\/\" title=\"California Republican Assemblyman Calls for Corruption Investigation Into Newsom\">health care industry<\/a> \u2064was the hardest hit by cyberattacks in the year ending in March, according to\u200c IBM\u2019s\u2064 annual report on data breaches. For the 13th straight year, it reported the most\u200b expensive breaches, averaging $11 million each.\u2064 Next was the financial sector at $5.9 million.<\/p>\n<p>Health care providers are a common target for criminal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/monitor-kids-social-media-thousands-teen-boys-extorted-sending-explicit-photos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">extortionists<\/a> because they have so much sensitive patient data, including health care histories, payment information, and even critical research data, Riggi\u200d said.<\/p>\n<p>Riggi, a former cybersecurity specialist with \u2063the FBI, said hospitals have been working to put in place better safeguards and more backup systems to prevent such attacks and respond to them when they occur.
