Thankfully, this once-overlooked issue is now receiving \u200dmore attention and\u2064 recognition,&#8221; expressed Jenna Carber, founder of PostpartumDepression.org, in an interview\u2062 with the Washington Examiner. &#8220;We are grateful for \u2063the groundbreaking progress that \u2064pharmaceutical companies have made in creating a pill-based treatment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Approximately 1-in-7 women \u200ccan develop PPD, experiencing symptoms such as hopelessness, \u200black\u200b of appetite, and difficulty \u200cbonding with their baby. In severe cases, women with PPD or the rare condition postpartum psychosis can even have thoughts \u2064of\u2063 self-harm and harming their child.<\/p>\n<p>What sets \u200dPPD apart \u200cfrom other \u200ddepression disorders\u200c is its connection to the significant hormonal changes in estrogen and progesterone levels after childbirth. Women with \u2062a family history of PPD \u200dare also more \u200blikely to experience symptoms. Zuranolone, an oral neuroactive steroid therapy, targets the root causes of PPD and can be taken at home.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Postpartum depression is\u2062 underrecognized, undertreated, \u200cand disruptive for \u200cthose who live with the condition. We collaborate with researchers around the world in an effort to develop more\u2063 rapid and effective \u2064therapies for the \u200dmany women who need support,&#8221; stated Kristina Deligiannidis, the lead physician at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, who conducted \u200bthe 196-person clinical trial used in the FDA&#8217;s \u200dreview.<\/p>\n<p>Zuranolone is taken once a day for 14 days, and after 15 days of treatment, 57% of patients experienced a 50% or more improvement \u200cin their PPD symptoms.
