min-height: 50px;  text-align: center;\">  \t<script>  \t\tgoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1'); });  \t<\/script>  <\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot__ad-label\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Department of Justice (DOJ) asked the high court to put the \u2063deal on hold after a\u2064 federal \u2064appeals court rejected a\u200d proposed delay.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Purdue on Friday argued a delay would be destructive, imperiling a settlement that has the support \u200bof all \u200bmajor stakeholders, including state attorneys general and people\u200c affected by the\u2063 opioid crisis.<\/p>\n<p>The DOJ\u2019s position would \u201ctake billions of dollars out of\u200b opioid abatement programs that are sorely needed\u201d and potentially \u201cdeprive victims of\u200c any meaningful recovery\u201d if\u200d the deal \u200cfalls apart, Purdue\u2019s lawyers wrote. <\/p>\n<p>That position was echoed by a group representing 60,000 people who have filed \u2064personal injury\u200b opioid claims in Purdue\u2019s bankruptcy. <\/p>\n<p>Purdue\u2019s plan would pay up to $750 million to individuals affected by the opioid crisis, and\u200c any delay\u200d of \u2063those funds \u200bwould have \u201creal consequences\u201d for the many opioid claimants who \u201clive on \u2062the edge of poverty\u201d\u200b and face risk of eviction\u2064 or repossession of their cars,\u200d according to \u200cthe personal injury claimants\u2019 filing.<\/p>\n<p>The Justice \u200cDepartment\u200c has argued the settlement abuses \u200blegal protections meant for debtors in \u201cfinancial\u2064 distress,\u201d not for wealthy corporate owners like the Sacklers, who did not file for bankruptcy themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Purdue has sought to use \u200bbankruptcy to\u2063 resolve \u2062thousands\u200c of lawsuits, many \u2063filed\u2062 by state and local governments, that said OxyContin\u200b helped\u2062 kickstart an opioid epidemic that caused more than 500,000 U.S. overdose deaths over two decades.<\/p>\n<p>Similar lawsuits related to the \u200bU.S. opioid crisis have resulted in more than $50 billion in settlements with manufacturers, drug distributors \u200band pharmacy chains.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>  (Reporting \u200bby Dietrich Knauth;
