In this book,\u2064 Garrow reveals\u200b an exchange between Obama and his girlfriend\u200c at the time, Sheila Miyoshi Jager, where Obama reportedly refused to condemn antisemitism and\u2064 black nationalism.<\/p>\n<p>The\u200c argument was sparked after the couple visited\u200c an \u2064exhibit about the trial of Adolf Eichmann, a Nazi \u200bresponsible for the \u200bHolocaust. At the time, Chicago was embroiled in controversy surrounding accusations of Jewish doctors infecting black babies with AIDS.\u200b The incident occurred during a lecture series organized by Louis Farrakhan&#8217;s\u200b Nation of Islam.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;In Jager&#8217;s recollection, what \u200bset off the\u2064 quarrel that precipitated the end of the couple&#8217;s\u200d relationship was Obama&#8217;s stubborn refusal, after\u2062 seeing the exhibit, and in the \u200cswirl \u2062of\u200b this Cokely affair, to condemn\u2062 Black racism,&#8221; Samuels wrote. &#8220;While acknowledging that Obama&#8217;s embrace\u2062 of a Black identity had created some degree of distance between the couple, she insisted\u2064 that what upset her that day\u2063 was Obama&#8217;s inability to condemn Cokely&#8217;s comments.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was not Obama&#8217;s Blackness that bothered her, \u2064but that he would \u2063not condemn antisemitism,&#8221; Samuels \u200badded.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In his memoir, <em>Dreams from My Father<\/em>, Obama portrayed \u200dthe argument differently, emphasizing his embrace of \u2062a\u2062 personal meaning \u200bfor the Black experience.\u2064 However,\u200c it is a documented\u200b fact that\u2063 Obama has \u2063associated with notable antisemites like Farrakhan. A\u200d photo surfaced showing Obama and Farrakhan smiling together during a Congressional Black \u2062Caucus meeting, \u2063despite Farrakhan&#8217;s controversial views on\u2063 Judaism and \u200cHitler.<\/p>\n<p>While Obama&#8217;s past associations have been \u2063downplayed by the media, it \u200bis important to examine his \u2063community organizing background. Conservative radio host Larry Elder\u200b pointed out that if the media had\u2063 scrutinized Obama&#8217;s association with \u200cRev.
