It had \u2063previously forecast a \u2062decline of no more than 2.5%.<\/p>\n<p>Maersk\u2062 controls about one-sixth of global \u2062container trade, transporting goods \u200cfor \u2063retailers and consumer \u2062companies such as Walmart, Nike\u2063 and Unilever.<\/p>\n<p>WPP, the world\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wpp-boosts-sales-outlook-but-falls-short-of-investors-expectations\/\" title=\"WPP boosts sales outlook but falls short of investors\u2019 expectations\">largest advertising group<\/a>, \u200dwarned that U.S. tech clients had \u200cpulled back spending in the second quarter,\u2062 which Chief\u200b Executive Mark Read said took the company by surprise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpend will pick up after a \u200cperiod of time, but I think \u2062we are\u200c nervous\u2063 for the rest of the \u2064year because \u2063we can\u2019t get total clarity on when\u200c that\u2019s going \u200dto happen,\u201d he told Reuters.<\/p>\n<p>The retreat in spending led WPP \u2063to follow rival \u200dInterpublic \u200c\u2013 which last month also blamed tech clients cutting marketing \u2062budgets \u2013 \u2064in lowering its\u200c growth forecast for this year, to 1.5-3.0% from \u200d3-5%.<\/p>\n<p>That was a stark \u200bcontrast from\u2063 February, when WPP, which owns \u200bthe Ogilvy, Grey \u200cand GroupM agencies, reckoned \u200cclients would spend on marketing through any downturn to prop up sales and justify \u2062price rises.<\/p>\n<p>Analysts said the news reflected caution among companies wrestling with higher borrowing costs \u200band consumers tightening\u200d their own\u200b budgets amid a cost of \u2063living crisis. <\/p>\n<p>Marketing spending\u200d is often the first \u200bto get cut when companies are worried about \u2062a strain \u200bon cash.<\/p>\n<p>WAIT \u200dAND SEE<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCorporations are in wait-and-see \u2063mode when it comes to splashing the cash and\u2063 handing margin over, at a \u200btime\u2064 when demand is \u2062very tough to profile,\u201d said Sophie Lund-Yates, lead equity \u200banalyst \u200dat Hargreaves Lansdown.<\/p>\n<p>Apple on Thursday warned that its sales \u200cwould decline for the fourth \u200dquarter in a row, \u200dalthough Amazon.com Inc \u200dwas more upbeat, reporting sales growth \u200dand profit that\u200b beat \u200dWall Street\u2019s expectations.<\/p>\n<p>The signs of economic turbulence will underscore\u200d concerns that a \u200bbounce in China\u2019s economic activity after\u200d Beijing lifted its long COVID lockdowns will prove short-lived.
