We need to lift up best practices\u200c of gun safety,&#8221;\u200b Cohen said. &#8220;Just like we make cars safer with seat belts, there are ways for us to make guns safer. We don&#8217;t\u200c want to see children lose their lives needlessly because of guns.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This isn&#8217;t the first time that the CDC has \u200btried \u200bto make\u200c the issue of guns a public health \u2063issue,&#8221; Gottlieb said. &#8220;They&#8217;ve\u200c done this in \u200dthe past, and part \u2062of this is trying to \u2063get \u200cfunding for anti-gun research, and then pushing it to\u2063 the medical profession &#8230; as \u2063a\u200b public health problem.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The CDC began\u200b funding research\u200c on the\u2062 correlation\u200c between guns and domestic violence in the early 1990s in connection with \u2063the agency&#8217;s broader project to reduce violence-related deaths\u2062 and injuries.<\/p>\n<p>But it soon \u200dfaced restrictions from Congress. In 1996, Arkansas Republican Rep.\u2063 Jay\u2062 Dickey drafted a provision into legislation funding\u200d the CDC that\u2064 said, &#8220;None \u2064of the funds made \u2063available in this title may be used, in whole or in part, to advocate or promote gun control.&#8221; Similar provisions have been\u2064 enacted in\u200c the years since. The so-called Dickey Amendment was extended to appropriations for the National Institutes of Health in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Although the Dickey Amendment\u200b had long been interpreted as a prohibition into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/records-indicate-bidens-pick-for-atf-director-was-a-registered-gun-control-lobbyist\/\" title=\"Records Indicate Biden\u2019s Pick For ATF Director Was A Registered Gun Control Lobbyist\">gun violence research<\/a> from a public health perspective, efforts to change the interpretation of the Dickey Amendment were successful in 2019, with Congress appropriating $25 million to the \u200dCDC and\u2064 $12.5 million\u2064 to the NIH for gun violence research, with the stipulation that it\u200b does not promote gun control.<\/p>\n<p>Cohen \u2064repeatedly said her top goal\u200d is to restore public trust in the CDC after the agency&#8217;s failures from COVID-19 brought confidence \u2064in the organization \u200bto record lows. The CDC, according to Cohen, can\u200d only be\u200c an informational tool\u2063 for communities and politicians to use in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/social-media-users-track-stock-trading-as-congress-considers-member-ban\/\" title=\"Social Media Users Track Stock Trading As Congress Considers Member Ban\">making policy decisions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, in recent weeks, Vice President Kamala Harris has \u2062explicitly used the language of public health to frame the need to\u2064 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/sheriff-issues-dire-warning-to-fleeing-gunman-we-will-hunt-you-down\/\" title=\"Sheriff's stern message to gunman on the run: 'We'll track you down'\">address gun\u2062 violence<\/a> through legislation.<\/p>\n<p>Harris recently called gun violence\u2063 a \u200bpreventable &#8220;epidemic&#8221; and has continued to stress\u200c the need\u2062 to push for additional &#8220;commonsense gun safety \u2062laws.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>After the mass shooting in Buffalo, New\u200d York, in May 2022, Harris made\u2064 a veiled comparison between gun violence \u2062and the COVID-19 pandemic \u200din her call for an &#8220;assault weapons&#8221; ban.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;On the issue of gun violence, I will say, as I&#8217;ve said countless times, we are \u200bnot sitting around waiting to figure out what the solution looks like. You know, we&#8217;re not looking for a vaccine,&#8221; Harris said at\u200d the time, referring to passing gun legislation through Congress.<\/p>\n<p>Second Amendment groups, however, argue\u200b that public health rhetoric will be ineffective, even in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/gun-groups-confident-that-public-health-framing-of-gun-violence-wont-work\/\" title=\"Gun groups remain unconvinced that the public health approach to gun violence will be effective.\">health-focused\u200c 2024\u200d election cycle<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not a \u2064health issue,&#8221; Gottlieb said. &#8220;You can&#8217;t get COVID from a gun. &#8230; It&#8217;s not a communicable \u2064disease.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Gottlieb said, however,\u200b that COVID-19 has changed the \u200bway people respond to public health \u200blanguage.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In [the] post-COVID era, we&#8217;ve seen the government use &#8230; health\u200b angles to gain more power\u2062 and control over people.
