Then came\u200d their loss to President Joe\u2063 Biden in the 2020 presidential election\u2064 and the subsequent\u200d Jan. 6 Capitol riot in which protesters chanted, &#8220;Hang Mike Pence!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The\u2063 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/pence-steps-up-attacks-against-trump-after-third-indictment\/\" title=\"Pence intensifies criticism of Trump following third indictment.\">long-suffering loyal vice president broke<\/a> with his \u200dboss on certifying that \u200celection and two years later\u2063 is one\u2063 of \u200dthe several Republicans \u2064challenging Trump \u2063for the Republican presidential\u200b nomination in 2024. And this disagreement came back to \u200dthe\u2062 forefront\u200d when special \u2064counsel Jack Smith unveiled a third\u200d indictment against Trump on Tuesday, focusing \u200don 2020 and Jan. 6.<\/p>\n<h3>Donald Trump Indicted: Timeline of 2020 Election Investigations<\/h3>\n<p>Pence, no longer beholden \u2063to Trump, isn&#8217;t hesitating from lobbying attacks against the \u200dformer president.\u200c It&#8217;s a notable \u2062shift \u200dfor Pence, who previously hesitated on\u200d harshly criticizing his former boss. But political experts said that it was a\u200c necessity for Pence\u200b to lean into his actions \u200cin early 2021 as he seeks the White House.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;This is\u200d Mike \u200cPence&#8217;s only strategy. Other candidates seem to\u200d be waiting for Trump to implode and\u2062 then hope to pick \u200bup\u2064 his voters\u200c then,&#8221; national \u200bRepublican strategist Brian Seitchik told\u2062 the\u2062 Washington Examiner. &#8220;That is not proving to be a worthwhile endeavor. It didn&#8217;t work\u2063 in 2016. And it has not worked\u200c for the campaign thus far. \u200dSo I really think it&#8217;s Mike Pence&#8217;s only option here.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;The\u200d fact is he&#8217;s been\u200c mired in\u200d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/democrat-gov-gretchen-whitmer-allegedly-traveled-to-florida-before-expressing-concern-about-traveling-to-fl\/\" title=\"Democrat Gov. Gretchen Whitmer Allegedly Traveled To Florida Before Expressing \u2018Concern\u2019 About Traveling To FL\">low single digits<\/a>. He has not yet qualified for the debate. So a strategy\u200c change\u2064 was certainly\u2062 required,&#8221; he added. &#8220;I&#8217;ll take\u2064 him at \u2063his word that this comes\u200c from an intellectually moral and honest place.\u200c But that \u2062aside, he needed to \u2062switch things up if he wanted \u2064to \u2064get into the\u2064 debate and into the real hunt for \u200cthe nomination.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Pence is mentioned multiple times in \u200cthe 45-page indictment, including his &#8220;contemporaneous notes&#8221; of Trump discussing election fraud in the wake \u200cof his defeat. The former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-says-pence-innocent-after-classified-docs-discovery-never-did-anything-knowingly-dishonest-in-his-life\/\" title=\"Trump Says Pence \u2018Innocent\u2019 After Classified Docs Discovery: \u2018Never Did Anything Knowingly Dishonest In His Life\u2019\">vice president defended<\/a> his actions surrounding\u200c the 2020 election, especially \u2062his refusal\u2062 to bend when Trump \u200bpressured him not to certify the results\u2063 of the election. &#8220;Anyone who \u2062puts himself \u2063over the Constitution should never be President of the United States,&#8221; Pence said in a statement after\u200d the\u2064 indictment was\u200b unveiled.<\/p>\n<p>A day later, Pence claimed Trump &#8220;was surrounded by a group of crackpot lawyers that\u200c kept telling him what his itching ears wanted to hear.&#8221; \u2063His campaign\u2062 is now\u200b selling\u200c T-shirts and hats branded with the \u200bphrase &#8220;Too Honest,&#8221; a nod \u2063to \u2064the indictment.<\/p>\n<p>Pence, unlike other\u200b 2024 \u200brivals, is \u2064in an unusual role in his battle against\u2062 Trump, experts\u2064 said. &#8220;Pence is in\u2064 really a unique position for a \u2063vice\u200b president running for\u200c president. In that, \u2064he&#8217;s running against the president under whom he served.\u200d That&#8217;s relatively unprecedented, certainly in modern\u200b times,&#8221;\u200c said Joel Goldstein, a vice presidential scholar \u2063at \u2064Saint Louis \u2064University. \u200b&#8221;Normally when the\u2064 vice president runs \u200cfor \u200bpresident, he inherits the support from the administration. And that \u2063hasn&#8217;t happened in this \u200dinstance.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In response\u200b to Pence&#8217;s attacks, Trump \u200bhit back on his social media\u200d platform Truth Social. &#8220;I feel badly for \u2063Mike \u200bPence, who \u200cis \u2062attracting no crowds, \u200benthusiasm, or loyalty from people who, \u2063as a member of the\u2063 Trump\u200d Administration, should be loving\u200c him,&#8221; Trump \u2064posted. &#8220;He\u200c didn&#8217;t fight against \u200bElection Fraud, which we will \u2063now be easily able to prove \u2062based on the most\u200b recent Fake Indictment &#038; information \u200bwhich will have to be \u200cmade available to\u2064 us, finally -\u2014a really \u200bBIG deal. \u2064The V.P. had power that Mike didn&#8217;t understand, but after the Election, the RINOS &#038; Dems changed the law, taking that power away!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Trump is \u2062currently the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/bill-barr-blasts-trump-says-he-lacks-discipline-to-be-president\/\" title=\"Barr criticizes Trump, cites lack of presidential discipline.\">undisputed front-runner<\/a> in\u200d the GOP primary race.\u200c Republican primary \u200dvoters\u2062 favor him at 53.9%, while \u200dPence trails far behind at 4.4%, according to a \u2064RealClearPolitics polling average of the 2024 field. Matt Dole, \u200ba \u2063Republican political consultant based in \u200cOhio, contends that Pence may have found\u2064 an opening \u200dto truly distinguish himself \u2064from Trump with\u200b the \u200dlatest indictment.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think\u2063 Pence feels as though the cuffs are off and he can \u200bspeak more \u2063candidly about it,&#8221; Dole said. &#8220;There&#8217;s a lot\u200d of people in\u2064 the race \u2064for president, and they&#8217;re all trying to find their path. And \u200bMike Pence has the best case to make for being wronged by\u200b the president and finding his \u200down\u2063 course that he \u200cbelieves \u200cis \u200creasonable. And I&#8217;m sure there are many voters who \u200cfeel it\u2063 was a reasonable course that Mike Pence took, and\u2064 so\u200c it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/tim-kaine-dems-have-different-paths-to-move-voting-legislation-through-the-senate\/\" title=\"Tim Kaine: Dems Have 'Different Paths' to Move Voting Legislation Through the Senate\">makes political sense<\/a> as well to sort of forge this trail.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>There is some unpredictability regarding how\u2064 effective this new \u200dstrategy \u2064from Pence will be. Former New Jersey\u200c Gov. Chris \u2064Christie, an\u2062 unrepentant Trump critic, has\u200b been booed at \u200bconservative gatherings \u200cby\u2063 Trump\u200d acolytes who take issue with \u2064his attacks \u200cagainst\u200d the former \u2062president. Another Trump critic \u200band \u20642024 rival, former Texas Rep. Will Hurd, has struggled to poll above 1% in several\u2063 national \u2064surveys. Pence hasn&#8217;t \u200bmet the donor \u2063requirement to participate in the first Republican National \u2062Committee \u200ddebate on Aug. 23, \u2063yet his\u200c campaign has suggested he&#8217;ll qualify by next week&#8217;s end.<\/p>\n<p>But the \u200cspecter\u200b of Jan.\u2064 6 will likely hover over Pence&#8217;s debate\u200b appearance, irrespective of\u2062 how harsh his comments are against Trump.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I \u2063think \u200bfor \u200chim, I mean, \u2062Jan.\u200d 6 \u200cis\u200c not going to go away,\u2064 and I think he&#8217;s trying to\u2064 adapt\u2063 to it,&#8221; Goldstein said. &#8220;What \u200bPence is\u2064 trying to \u2063do, I \u200dthink, on the one hand, is\u2064 to say, &#8216;Look, \u200cfor the entire administration, I \u2063was on board with what the administration was trying to\u200c do. But when \u2063I\u2064 was asked to \u200cviolate my\u2062 oath to the\u2062 Constitution and to do something that was \u200dbeyond my powers, I refused to do so.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dole, the Ohio \u200dRepublican, \u2062suggested that Pence will get \u2062some\u200d boon out of his \u2064current anti-Trump comments. &#8220;I\u2064 think it helps. He&#8217;s getting coverage\u2064 out of\u2063 this,&#8221; \u2062he \u200dsaid. &#8220;Whether it helps him once you get to the debate or\u200d whether it helps him long \u2062term \u2063with the Republican primary coalition. I \u2064don&#8217;t know the \u200canswer to that. It depends whether eventually there&#8217;s a tipping \u200bpoint within \u2062that coalition that enough\u2063 is\u200b enough \u2063with the president. I \u2063don&#8217;t\u200b think this indictment does that. But the candidates who\u200d oppose \u2062Trump have to find a\u2063 way \u2064to\u200c cut into his coalition and\u2062 peel people away.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I can&#8217;t \u200csay whether \u200cit\u200c will\u200d be successful \u200bor not.\u200c It seems\u2063 as though it&#8217;s \u200ban uphill battle.
