The most serious charge carries a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/kim-potter-to-be-charged-with-second-degree-manslaughter-in-daunte-wright-shooting\/\" title=\"Kim Potter To Be Charged With Second-Degree Manslaughter In Daunte Wright Shooting\">maximum prison sentence<\/a> of\u200c 20 years.<\/p>\n<p>When the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-pleads-not-guilty-to-third-indictment-since-2024-campaign-launch\/\" title=\"Trump denies charges in third indictment since 2024 campaign.\">court deputy read aloud<\/a> the name of the case\u2014&#8221;<em>United States of\u2062 America<\/em> v. <em>Donald J. Trump<\/em>&#8220;\u2014the former president shook his head in disapproval.<\/p>\n<p>The next court date in the case will be Aug. 28 before U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan, though Upadhyaya said Trump would not be required to attend. Aug. 28 is five days after the first scheduled Republican primary debate. Trump has yet to say whether \u200bhe will take \u200dpart.<\/p>\n<p>Chutkan\u200b intends to set a trial date at\u200c that time, Upadhyaya said. Trump&#8217;s lawyer, \u200cJohn Lauro, \u200bregistered an\u2062 early objection, arguing\u200b that the magnitude of the case\u200b and the amount of materials involved could \u2064require a lot of time.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What we desire utmost is the opportunity to fairly\u200b defend President Trump in this matter,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutor\u200b Thomas Windom countered \u2064that the case should proceed as normal, including with a speedy trial.<\/p>\n<p>Trump was\u2062 released without travel restrictions. One \u200dof his conditions of release is\u2062 that he not discuss the case with any witnesses unless accompanied by his lawyers.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has\u2062 portrayed the indictment, as well as the other criminal cases against him, as a\u200c &#8220;witch hunt&#8221; intended to derail his White House campaign. In a series of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/why-this-average-american-is-voting-for-donald-trump\/\" title=\"Why This Average American Is Voting for Donald Trump\">social media posts<\/a> since Tuesday, he has accused the Biden administration of targeting him for political gain.<\/p>\n<p>He previously pleaded not guilty to\u200d federal charges that he retained classified documents after leaving office and New York State charges \u200bthat he\u2064 falsified documents in connection with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/marjorie-taylor-greene-calls-likely-second-federal-trump-indictment-election-meddling\/\" title=\"Marjorie Taylor Greene labels potential second Trump indictment as 'election meddling'.\">hush \u2064money payments<\/a> to a porn\u200c star.<\/p>\n<p>Trump may soon face more charges in Georgia, where a\u200d state prosecutor is investigating his attempts to overturn the election there. The \u2062Atlanta-area prosecutor, Fani \u2064Willis, \u200chas said she will file indictments by mid-August.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I\u200b NEED ONE MORE \u2064INDICTMENT TO\u200c ENSURE MY ELECTION!&#8221; Trump wrote\u2062 on his Truth Social media platform ahead of his Thursday court appearance.<\/p>\n<h3>Trump Retains Polling Lead<\/h3>\n<p>About half of Republicans said they would not vote for Trump if he\u2063 were convicted of a felony, according to a new Reuters\/Ipsos poll, underscoring the potential risks his legal entanglements pose for\u200d his candidacy.<\/p>\n<p>But the same poll, taken after Tuesday&#8217;s indictment, also demonstrated his \u2063remarkable resiliency \u200cin the\u200d Republican primary race. \u2064He earned the support of 47 percent of Republicans, extending his \u200blead over second-place Florida governor Ron DeSantis, at 13 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Three-quarters of Republicans\u200b said they\u2062 agreed that the charges were &#8220;politically motivated,&#8221; showing that Trump&#8217;s claim \u2063that he is the victim of political\u200c persecution resonates with his \u2063base.<\/p>\n<p>The vast majority of Republican leaders, including several competing with Trump for the White \u2063House, have either defended him or\u2063 offered muted criticism, instead accusing the Biden administration of weaponizing the Justice Department against a campaign foe.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the allegations\u200c in Tuesday&#8217;s indictment had been well-documented in media reports and the\u200d investigation conducted\u2064 by a \u200bU.S. House of Representatives select committee.<\/p>\n<p>But\u2064 the indictment featured some details that were not\u200b widely known, including several based\u200b on grand jury testimony and contemporaneous notes from former vice \u2062president Mike \u2063Pence, who is also \u200brunning for the Republican presidential nomination.<\/p>\n<p>The indictment describes a phone call\u200c in which Pence told Trump there was \u200bno legal basis for the theory that Pence could block certification of the election.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You&#8217;re too honest,&#8221; Trump responded, according to prosecutors.<\/p>\n<p>Although Pence repeatedly told Trump he lacked the\u200b authority to \u200creject electoral votes from certain states, Trump kept repeating the claim.<\/p>\n<p>On Jan. 6,\u2063 as he spoke to his \u200dsupporters before \u200bthey\u200b attacked the Capitol, Trump said: \u2064&#8221;If Mike Pence does\u200c the right thing, we win the election.&#8221; Some rioters at the Capitol later \u200dchanted, &#8220;Hang Mike Pence!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Far from \u200bdeterred by the violence, Trump and his associates kept calling Republican members of Congress hours after the riot \u2063had ended, still intent on blocking certification, the indictment said.<\/p>\n<p>Pence was one of \u200cthe \u2062few \u2063prominent Republicans to criticize Trump on Tuesday, saying that &#8220;anyone who puts himself over the Constitution \u200cshould never be president.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>(Reporting by Sarah N.
