The investigation was launched in response to a\u2062 complaint that said the Virginia \u200bdepartment had discriminated against students with \u200bdisabilities during \u200cthe COVID-19 pandemic \u200dby issuing guidance that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/oklahoma-republicans-fight-back-after-rogue-school-board-refuses-to-enforce-bathroom-use-by-sex\/\" title=\"Oklahoma Republicans Fight Back After Rogue School Board Refuses To Enforce Bathroom Use By Sex\">allowed school districts<\/a> to\u200b meet student needs inadequately.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>Former and Current Leadership<\/h3>\n<p>The time frame \u200cin question predates the administration of Gov. Glenn Youngkin \u2062(R-VA),\u2062 who\u200c took \u200doffice in January 2022. Coons was recently appointed to the position following the resignation of Jillian Balow, Youngkin&#8217;s first appointee to \u200bthe position.<\/p>\n<p>Former Gov.\u2063 Ralph Northam appointee James Lane previously held the \u2062position of superintendent in the Democratic administration. Lane has since taken a job in the \u200bU.S. Department of Education as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/progressive-lawyers-help-biden-administration-gut-devoss-title-ix-rules\/\" title=\"Progressive Lawyers Help Biden Administration Gut DeVos\u2019s Title IX Rules\">acting assistant secretary<\/a> of elementary \u2064and secondary education.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Virginia Department of Education told\u200c the Washington Examiner that it could not comment on ongoing investigations but that the agency was committed to ensuring &#8220;best-in-class&#8221; special education services in the state.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;VDOE is committed \u200bto developing a best-in-class special education program in Virginia,&#8221; \u2063the\u2064 department said in a statement. &#8220;Dr. Coons announced last week at the \u200bBoard of\u2064 Education meeting that special education\u2064 will be a recurring\u200d Board\u200c Agenda item to ensure\u2064 it is discussed and prioritized.
