The incident unfolded in Eagle Pass, where state police were operating their drones and captured \u200bthe shocking scene.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cOur rangers \u2064were operating their drones and they saw this individual guiding a group of migrants across the river,\u201d said Texas \u2062DPS Lt. Chris Olivarez \u2063during a phone call Thursday.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This marked the first time that\u2063 state police in Eagle Pass had \u2064observed a\u200d smuggler carrying\u2062 a firearm while leading\u200d people across the \u2064water. Lt. Olivarez expressed his surprise, stating, &#8220;It\u2019s\u2063 rare to see people that\u200c are smugglers that are\u200c armed. I don\u2019t know \u2064if \u2064they do\u200b that just for \u2064protection or to intimidate\u200b the migrants\u2062 as they\u2019re bringing them across.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The man with the longarm \u2064only went halfway across the river before returning to Mexico, leaving\u2063 the \u200bgroup \u200bstranded\u200c on\u2062 an island, awaiting pickup by the\u200d U.S. Border Patrol or facing the\u200c risky\u200c decision to continue their journey\u200b across the river.<\/p>\n<p>Not far \u2064from this incident, \u200bin the Rio Grande\u200c Valley region,\u200c police had previously \u200breported similar incidents where individuals, \u2063armed with handguns, escorted migrants across the Rio Grande.
