Issue 1, which Ohio \u2062voters will settle on\u2063 Aug. 8, ensures \u2063that the state\u2019s governing document may\u2062 not be\u2064 so flippantly\u2064 modified.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bigger\u2063 Than \u2063One Ballot Measure<\/h2>\n<p>Tuesday\u2019s special election is an explicit attempt by the state GOP\u2062 to prevent an \u2063outsider\u200d operation like the one executed \u200cin Kansas in 2022 from significantly changing Ohio\u2019s political landscape on abortion, parental rights, and even guns, which Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb\u2064 has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1YHVtS-pEhU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">already promised<\/a> to target via\u2062 ballot measure.<\/p>\n<p>In Kansas, <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/08\/01\/out-of-state-democrats-pay-millions-to-influence-kansas-election-because-abortion-is-on-the-ballot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">out-of-state<\/a> donors and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/dem-gov-hopefuls-side-with-union-in-fight-over-virginia-school-closures\/\" title=\"Dem Gov Hopefuls Side With Union in Fight Over Virginia School Closures\">special interest groups<\/a> that opposed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/in-ohio-voters-to-decide-how-easily-theyll-let-pro-abortion-interest-groups-change-their-constitution\/\" title=\"Ohio voters will determine the level of ease for pro-abortion interest groups to amend their constitution.\">homegrown pro-life amendment raised\u2063 millions<\/a> to\u2064 expand\u2064 Midwestern abortion operations. Their deliberately <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/08\/03\/deception-drove-kansans-to-vote-down-pro-life-value-them-both-amendment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">deceptive<\/a> practices led voters \u200cto\u2062 reject a proposal\u200d that would have declared there is\u2062 no constitutional right in Kansas to abortion, taxpayer-funded or\u200d otherwise.<\/p>\n<p>Ohio voters are <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/07\/05\/leftist-push-to-disenfranchise-parents-in-ohio-riddled-with-deception\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">already facing<\/a> their\u200c first hurdle in a similar battle.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>National activist organizations like \u200cthe <a href=\"https:\/\/heritageaction.com\/blog\/war-on-parents-the-aclus-fight-against-parental-rights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ACLU<\/a>, Planned\u2063 Parenthood, and various LGBT groups banded\u200d together earlier this year\u200b to add a ballot \u2063proposal that \u2062would enshrine abortion up \u2062until \u200dbirth in the state constitution, as well as override \u200dparental consent laws for minors \u200dseeking irreversible gender experiments.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The deliberately vague proposal\u2064 would decree that \u201cevery individual has a right\u201d to \u201creproductive decisions\u201d\u2063 regardless of\u200c age\u200c or \u200dtrimester. Advocates \u200cand their <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/createdequalorg\/status\/1656374041211555854?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">petitioner<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ProtectWomenOH\/status\/1656288294689206274?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pawns<\/a> promise \u2063abortions \u201cmay be\u2063 prohibited after fetal viability,\u201d but all a woman needs to get around \u2062such a \u2063law, thanks to the proposal\u2019s generous language, is a\u200d doctor\u2019s opinion that she needs\u200d an abortion for the sake of her\u2062 \u201chealth,\u201d which is left open to interpretation.<\/p>\n<p>In February, an\u200c attorney for the ACLU\u2062 of Ohio,\u200b a member of\u2064 the euphemistically-named Ohioans for Reproductive Freedom (ORF) coalition, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statenews.org\/government-politics\/2023-03-15\/foes-of-planned-ohio-abortion-amendment-launch-effort-to-discourage-voters-from-signing-petitions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">confirmed<\/a> that if\u2064 their constitutional amendment\u2064 passes, laws requiring parents\u200d to consent \u200bbefore their teen daughter\u2063 gets an abortion would not \u2064necessarily be \u200benforced.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Unite for Reproductive\u200b &#038; Gender \u200cEquity, another member of the ORF coalition and proud supporter of <a href=\"https:\/\/urge.org\/about\/mission-and-values\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201csex-positive, gender-expansive, and\u2064 abortion\u2062 positive\u201d<\/a> policies, also openly <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/URGE_org\/status\/1278404001818501120\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">opposes parental consent legislation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The ballot proposal won\u2019t be up\u2064 for \u2064a vote until \u200bNovember but \u2063is directly \u200cintertwined with the \u2062special\u2064 election\u200c next week.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Battle for Ohio<\/h2>\n<p>Ohio Republicans\u200c recognize the\u200c long-term \u2063consequences a proposal\u200c like the one scheduled to appear on the ballot in November would have \u200cfor their state and constituents, \u200cso they passed a resolution\u2064 in May that asked voters to decide this \u2063month if constitutional \u200camendments should require a supermajority \u2014 a 60 percent\u2062 threshold vote \u2014 to be ratified.<\/p>\n<p>Issue 1 also asks voters to sign off on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohiosos.gov\/globalassets\/elections\/2023\/spec\/issuereport.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201celevating\u2063 the standards\u201d<\/a> \u200cfor constitutional amendments by requiring petitions \u201cbe signed by at least five percent of the electors of \u2062each county based on\u2062 the total vote \u200cin the county\u201d for the latest gubernatorial election and banning the addition of signatures to a petition after submission to the Ohio secretary of state.<\/p>\n<p>For their\u200b efforts to \u2063protect their elections from external forces, the GOP \u200dgovernment was smeared by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/story\/opinion\/editorials\/2023\/03\/30\/why-would-willy-nilly-august-special-election-be-a-betrayal-to-ohio-voters\/70059689007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">local<\/a> \u2062papers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2023\/04\/22\/abortion-ohio-constitution-amendment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">corporate media<\/a> outlets, and the groups\u2063 touting the\u200d pro-abortion and gender ideology proposal.\u2062 Planned Parenthood activist\u200d and\u2064 ORF chair Lauren Blauvelt went so far as to accuse \u2063lawmakers of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/story\/opinion\/columns\/guest\/2023\/05\/19\/ohio-august-2023-special-election-blocking-abortion-democracy-planned-parenthood-citizen-initiated\/70229746007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cworking overtime to dismantle democracy as we know it.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Intrastate polling yields conflicting data on\u2062 how\u200c Ohioans plan to vote on Issue 1. Yet\u200b even the competing results of polls from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.onu.edu\/northern-poll\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ohio Northern University<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2023\/07\/19\/ohio-issue-1-poll-finds-most-ohio-voters-oppose-august-ballot-issue\/70383816007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">USA Today\/Suffolk University<\/a>, the latter of which was \u200d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/story\/opinion\/columns\/guest\/2023\/08\/02\/august-8-election-why-are-poll-results-about-issue-1-so-different\/70502224007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">criticized<\/a> for overinflating\u200b opposition to Issue\u200b 1, both acknowledge that a significant portion of voters were still undecided on\u2064 the issue in the weeks\u2063 preceding the election.<\/p>\n<p>Pro-life \u2062and pro-parent groups in the state who have a vested interest in the November ballot proposal \u200ccapitalized on\u2064 this gap by\u200b rolling out <a href=\"https:\/\/protectwomenohio.com\/2023\/08\/protect-women-ohio-launches-5-5-million-ad-buy-in-support-of-issue-1-during-final-week\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">millions of dollars of\u200c ads<\/a> that \u200cexpose the \u2064leftist campaign to transform Ohio\u2019s constitution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe secret is out: Ohio has some of the \u2063weakest requirements\u200b in the country for passing constitutional amendments and greedy, out-of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/millions-in-out-of-state-donations-funneled-into-ohio-votes-on-abortion\/\" title=\"Ohio votes on abortion receive millions in out-of-state donations.\">-state special interest groups<\/a> \u2062with deep pockets\u200b know it,\u201d Protect Women Ohio board member Molly Smith said in a statement. \u201cThat makes \u200cOhio a prime target for\u2063 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/dont-be-fooled-the-left-is-gaslighting-on-the-economy\/\" title=\"Don\u2019t Be Fooled\u2014the Left Is Gaslighting On The Economy\">radical special interest groups<\/a>, like the ACLU,\u200d to parachute into the state and strip parents of their rights. Enough is\u2064 enough. It\u2019s time \u2063to \u200bpass Issue 1 and put long overdue, common-sense protections in place.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>state, and attorney general are all held by Republicans, is a key battleground.
