In 2019, France passed a law establishing &#8220;neighboring rights,&#8221;\u200d which <a title=\"French news service sues Elon Musk's X for not paying news outlets.\" href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/french-news-service-sues-elon-musks-x-over-failing-to-compensate-news-outlets\/\">requires online platforms<\/a> to negotiate compensation with\u2062 news outlets.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Agence France-Presse\u2062 has expressed its concerns over the clear refusal\u2064 from Twitter (recently rebranded\u2064 as &#8216;X&#8217;) to enter into discussions regarding the \u2064implementation of neighboring rights for the press,&#8221; the outlet said in a statement.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Musk \u2063responded to AFP&#8217;s lawsuit in a post\u2064 on X, stating, &#8220;This is bizarre. They want us to pay *them* for traffic to their site where they\u2064 make advertising revenue and we don&#8217;t!?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>France&#8217;s\u2063 antitrust watchdog fined Google 500 million euros in 2021 for failing to negotiate compensation with \u200blocal news \u200doutlets.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit coincides with Meta and Google removing news links from the Canadian internet in\u200d protest of C-18, a bill\u200d that would <a title=\"Mainstream Media and Big Tech\u2019s Seismic Shift to the Left\" href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/mainstream-media-and-big-techs-seismic-shift-to-the-left\/\">require online platforms<\/a> to provide compensation to news outlets.
