But a <a href=\"https:\/\/oversight.house.gov\/release\/hearing-wrap-up-suppression-of-the-lab-leak-hypothesis-was-not-based-in-science\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent congressional hearing<\/a> revealed that the CCP wasn\u2019t the only one guilty. A few <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/court-fauci-biden-officials-must-cough-up-records-of-collusion-with-big-tech-to-shush-dissenters\/\" title=\"Court: Fauci, Biden Officials Must Cough Up Records Of Collusion With Big Tech To Shush Dissenters\">key public health officials<\/a> and scientists\u2062 in the West served \u2063as\u200d the party\u2019s useful idiots by shutting down debates about the origin of the pandemic early on.<\/p>\n<p>The House Select Subcommittee on the\u2064 Coronavirus Pandemic held a hearing in mid-July to \u201cexamine the potential conflicts of\u200c interest and suppression of scientific discourse by the National Institutes of Health surrounding the drafting, publication, and critical reception of the infamous \u2018The Proximal Origin of SARS-CoV-2\u2019 (Proximal \u200bOrigin)\u200b correspondence.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1854222704\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-70aae4c1a0ce1358e8bafa5cf8717690 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-70aae4c1a0ce1358e8bafa5cf8717690\"><\/div>\n<p>The infamous paper,\u00a0\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41591-020-0820-9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Proximal Origin of \u200cSARS-CoV-2<\/a>,\u201d was published in\u2062 the influential journal <em>Nature Medicine<\/em> on \u2063March 17, \u200b2020. Its\u200c five authors wrote with \u2062unequivocal confidence: \u201cOur analyses clearly show that SARS-CoV-2 is not \u2062a laboratory \u2062construct or \u2063a purposefully manipulated virus. We do not believe that any \u200ctype of laboratory-based scenario is plausible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Joao Monteiro, the chief editor of <em>Nature Medicine<\/em>,<em> <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JMinImmunoland\/status\/1239966983279366145?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tweeted<\/a> on the same day: \u201cLet\u2019s put conspiracy theories about the origin of #SARSCoV2 to \u200crest and help to \u200bstop the spread of misinformation\u2014great work from @K_G_Andersen #covid19.\u201d The prestige of the authors and the magazine turned this paper into one \u2063of the \u2062most potent weapons to \u2063suppress the debate over the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-said-he-would-press-china-on-the-origins-of-covid-he-hasnt\/\" title=\"Biden Said He Would Press China on the Origins of COVID. He Hasn\u2019t.\">lab-leak theory<\/a> \u200cof Covid\u2019s origin.<\/p>\n<p>According to the House subcommittee\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/oversight.house.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Final-Report-7.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">report<\/a>,\u2064 since the commentary\u2019s\u2064 publication, it has been regarded as \u201cthe single most impactful and influential scientific\u200c paper in history\u201d and\u2064 \u201chas been accessed 5.84 million times.\u201d Government officials,\u200d the media, scientists, and many others referred to it \u200cas indisputable evidence that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-admin-moves-to-cut-wuhan-lab-funding-amid-gop-probe-of-covid-origins\/\" title=\"Biden administration reduces Wuhan lab funding amidst GOP investigation into COVID origins.\">lab-leak\u200b theory<\/a> was a conspiracy and that anyone who brought \u200dit up was a conspiracist and a racist.\u2063 The Chinese \u200bCommunist Party welcomed the commentary as scientific backing to insist that Covid-19 originated in nature; thus, the CCP was\u2064 not responsible for the 15 million Covid-related deaths and millions more suffering during the pandemic.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Science Tainted by Politics<\/h2>\n<p>Yet through the Herculean efforts\u2064 of a determined few, including journalists \u2062such as <a href=\"https:\/\/unherd.com\/2023\/07\/the-secret-messages-behind-the-lab-leak-cover-up\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ian\u00a0Birrell<\/a>, the\u200b volunteer group <a href=\"https:\/\/drasticresearch.org\/2021\/10\/06\/new-analysis-of-defuse-proposal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DRASTIC<\/a>,\u2062 and the Republican-led <a href=\"https:\/\/oversight.house.gov\/release\/hearing-wrap-up-suppression-of-the-lab-leak-hypothesis-was-not-based-in-science\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">House\u2062 Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic<\/a>, the\u200b public has now learned that the paper wasn\u2019t an objective\u200c scientific \u2064inquiry \u200bbut rather the result of\u200c coordinated efforts between them and public health officials. The most troubling aspect of the paper\u2064 is that although the authors denounced the lab-leak theory publicly, they privately doubted their own conclusion and worried \u200dthat \u2063there\u200b was growing\u200d evidence contradicting their assertion.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-757b8bc43cbaf7f7893d21f16e15c09f fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-757b8bc43cbaf7f7893d21f16e15c09f\"><\/div>\n<p>According to the House subcommittee\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/oversight.house.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Final-Report-7.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">report<\/a>, on \u2063Jan. \u206331, 2020, Anthony Fauci, the\u2063 director of the National Institute of\u200b Allergy and Infectious Diseases and adviser to\u2063 President \u200cDonald Trump on the pandemic, requested\u2062 Kristian G. Andersen, a \u200dscientist working at the Scripps Research Institute, to draft a paper \u200baiming to \u201cdisprove the lab \u2064leak theory to \u2064avoid blaming China for the COVID-19 pandemic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The next day,\u200c on Feb. 1, \u2064Sir Jeremy Farrar, then director\u2062 of the Wellcome Trust (now the chief scientist of the World Health \u200bOrganization), convened\u2064 a\u200b conference call. Participants\u200b included all five scientists \u2064who later authored the \u201cProximal Origin\u201d paper: Fauci, Director of National\u200d Institutes \u200dof Health (NIH) Francis Collins, and Sir Patrick Vallance, the U.K. government\u2019s\u2062 chief scientific adviser\u2064 until\u2064 recently. Due to Fauci\u2019s \u2064repeated nudging, Andersen \u2062began to draft a paper rejecting the lab-leak theory.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Double-Faced, \u200dDeceptive Scientists<\/h2>\n<p>Emails and private messages showed\u2064 that almost all the participants at the time thought\u200b the\u2063 lab-leak theory\u200c was\u200b probable. Farrar said Covid-19 \u201cwas a \u2063brand-new virus that seemingly sprang from nowhere. Except that this pathogen had surfaced in Wuhan, a city\u200b with a BSL-4 virology lab that is home to an almost unrivaled\u2062 collection of bat viruses.\u201d Yet\u200c despite his doubt, Farrar\u2019s primary concerns were to protect the controversial \u201cgain-of-function\u201d research that he and Fauci funded and\u200d to avoid\u200c blaming the\u2064 Chinese government for the sake of preventing the Sino-U.S. relationship from further deteriorating \u200dunder Trump. What should have been a scientific inquiry was tainted by politics from the beginning.<\/p>\n<p>Despite privately confessing there was a \u201c50:50\u201d possibility that\u200d Covid-19 was leaked from the\u2063 Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV),\u200c Farrar signed the infamous open \u200dletter published in\u200d a prominent science journal<em>,\u00a0The Lancet<\/em>,<em> <\/em>claiming the\u200b lab-leak theory is a conspiracy<em>. <\/em>Later, it turned out the letter was\u2063 organized\u200b by EcoHealth Alliance\u2019s head, Peter \u200cDaszak,\u200d whose company had funneled money from the NIH to\u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/useful-idiots-in-the-west-helped-the-ccp-cover-up-the-worst-scientific-scandal-of-our-time\/\" title=\"Western Useful Idiots aided CCP in concealing the biggest scientific scandal ever.\">fund potentially dangerous gain-<\/a>of-function research at WIV.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-ecd26263d83cc0f54251a8519c5ba2a1 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-ecd26263d83cc0f54251a8519c5ba2a1\"><\/div>\n<p>Andersen set up \u2064a Slack group with other co-authors. He stated that their paper aimed \u200dto throw out the lab-leak theory. Yet he was worried \u2062that \u201cthe scientific\u200d evidence isn\u2019t \u2063conclusive enough\u201d\u2064 to support the natural origin theory. He shared a disturbing paper\u200d written by Dr. Ralph Baric and Dr. Shi Zhengli (the leading scientist at WIV), which Farrar deemed a \u201chow-to-manual for \u200cbuilding the Wuhan coronavirus in a laboratory.\u201d Dr. Edward Holmes, one of the co-authors who worked with Andersen, responded, \u201cf-ck,\u2064 this is bad\u201d and \u201cOh my god, what worse words than that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another coauthor, Robert Garry, deemed the\u200d lab-leak theory\u2064 entirely\u2063 possible in private\u200d messages like <a href=\"https:\/\/unherd.com\/2023\/07\/the-secret-messages-behind-the-lab-leak-cover-up\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this one<\/a>: \u201cThe main thing still in my mind is that the \u2063lab escape version of this is so\u2064 friggin\u2019 likely to have happened because they were already \u2062doing this type of work and the molecular data is fully consistent with that \u2064scenario.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>After these Slack messages were released, Justin Kinney, co-founder \u200dof the advocacy group Biosafety Now,<strong> <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/unherd.com\/2023\/07\/the-secret-messages-behind-the-lab-leak-cover-up\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a> journalist\u200d Birrell that they\u200c had made a strong case for a laboratory origin for Covid.<\/p>\n<p>Andersen shared their findings and doubts \u200dwith Fauci and Farrar and added, \u201cUnfortunately, none of this helps refute a lab origin, and\u200b the possibility must be considered as\u2064 a serious scientific theory\u200c (which is what we do) \u2062and not dismissed out of\u200d hand as another \u200b\u2018conspiracy\u2019 theory.\u201d \u200bYet Fauci and Farrar asked the authors \u200bto continue writing the draft. Andersen told his co-authors, \u201cIt\u2019s well above my pay grade to call the shots on a final conclusion.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conflicts of Interest<\/h2>\n<p>Farrar and Collins were <a href=\"https:\/\/unherd.com\/2023\/07\/the-secret-messages-behind-the-lab-leak-cover-up\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reportedly<\/a> \u201cpleased\u201d with the final draft\u200c of the paper before the authors submitted it to <em>Nature Medicine<\/em>. Farrar even changed some of the wording \u200cin the paper to strengthen its final\u200b conclusion. \u2062The co-authors joked in their Slack messages that Farrar\u200b should be credited as the sixth author. \u200dRoger\u200c Pielke Jr., who\u200c writes about science and politics in his <a href=\"https:\/\/rogerpielkejr.substack.com\/p\/why-proximal-origins-must-be-retracted\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Substack \u2062newsletter<\/a>, commented that Farrar\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s11948-022-00386-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ghost authorship<\/a> \u201cis unethical and is itself \u2062a basis for a publication\u2019s retraction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After \u2064the paper was published, the authors continued to\u2064 express their worries about the growing evidence\u2062 of\u2064 the lab-leak theory in \u2062Slack. But publicly, they and the public health officials they worked with defended their conclusion and misled journalists. For \u200bexample, Farrar <a href=\"https:\/\/unherd.com\/2023\/07\/the-secret-messages-behind-the-lab-leak-cover-up\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a> journalist Birrell \u2063the paper was<strong> <\/strong>\u201cthe most important research on the genomic epidemiology of the origins of this \u2062virus,\u201d while failing to disclose his role or conflicts of interest.<\/p>\n<p>The House Subcommittee\u200d on the \u2063Coronavirus Pandemic\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/oversight.house.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Final-Report-7.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">final report<\/a> affirms that the \u201cProximal Origin\u201d paper was not the result of rigorous scientific research but \u2064the product\u200d of political intervention \u2063and \u2063coverup. Everybody involved in this scandal did it\u2063 out of greed and self-preservation:<strong> <\/strong>The\u2062 public health \u2063officials such as Farrar \u200dand Fauci tried to bury the lab-leak theory so they could hide their roles in funding the dangerous \u201cgain-of-function\u201d research in WIV; pressure from these officials and \u2062the authors\u2019 desires to protect future funding for risky \u2062research\u2062 drove these authors to write a paper they didn\u2019t believe in. <\/p>\n<p>By \u200chelping the\u2062 CCP mislead the public and \u2062shutting down debates \u200dabout the lab-leak theory so early, these \u200duseful idiots caused the international scientific and intelligence communities\u2062 to miss a precious period \u2014 the early \u2062days of the\u200d pandemic \u2014 to unearth the true origin of Covid-19. Now we may never find out how Covid-19 started. No wonder one scientist\u2062 <a href=\"https:\/\/unherd.com\/2023\/07\/the-secret-messages-behind-the-lab-leak-cover-up\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">called<\/a> the \u201cProximal Origin\u201d paper \u201cthe biggest\u00a0scientific scandal of our lifetime.\u201d \u200c <\/p>\n<p>The scientific community may never regain\u200b the public \u200dtrust it enjoyed before the pandemic.
