The\u2064 continent is home to around 25 million\u200c people who are HIV-positive.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cAfrican populations\u200b are \u2062still drastically underrepresented in human DNA studies, \u2064despite experiencing the \u200dhighest burden of HIV infection,\u201d said co-first author\u2064 Paul McLaren, of the Public Health Agency of Canada\u2019s National Microbiology Laboratory. \u201cBy studying a large sample of people of African \u200bancestry, we\u2019ve been \u2063able to identify a new\u200b genetic variant that only exists in this population and \u200bwhich is linked to lower HIV viral\u200c loads.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The gene (CHD1L) \u200bis known to play a role in DNA \u200brepair, however, it is unclear what factors led to the reduction of \u2062the HIV viral load.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cWith more than a million new HIV\u2064 infections a year, it\u2019s clear that \u2062we still have\u2062 a long way to go in the fight\u200b against HIV \u2014 we are yet to have a vaccine \u200bto prevent infection, have\u2062 yet to find \u200da cure and still \u200bsee drug\u200b resistance emerging\u2063 in some individuals.
