The last time\u200d confidence was below 60% was in 1988, when just 58% had confidence in the military. The data was\u2062 collected from June 1-22.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gallup\u200d reported, &#8220;At 60%,\u200d confidence in the military \u2063was last this low in \u20641997, and it hasn&#8217;t been lower\u2064 since 1988, when 58% were confident. From the late 1970s to the early 1980s\u200b \u2014 during the Cold War and amid threats to U.S.\u2062 power, including the Iran hostage crisis \u2014 between 50% \u200cand 58% of Americans were confident in \u2063the military.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Political Divide and Declining Confidence<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The fall in confidence in the military has been especially pronounced among\u2064 Republicans, who have historically been the\u200c most likely to \u2064be supportive of the military. Republican confidence\u200d in the military has dropped by\u200c 23 points\u200b since 2020, when 91% expressed confidence in the military. While Gallup noted that Democrats&#8217; confidence rose after President Joe Biden was inaugurated, it has since declined. The group with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/clinton-foundation-donations-hit-lowest-point-in-a-decade-down-75-since-2016\/\" title=\"Clinton Foundation Donations Hit Lowest Point in a Decade, Down 75% Since 2016\">lowest amount<\/a> of confidence was independents, whose confidence level\u2063 sits at just 55%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The drop in confidence came after\u200c a\u2063 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/top-house-republican-blasts-bidens-claims-about-afghanistan-devoid-of-reality\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bungled withdrawal<\/a> from \u2064Afghanistan, where\u200b the U.S. had a military presence for over 20 years. Thirteen American service\u2064 members were killed in\u2063 a suicide bombing during\u200d the \u2064final days of the withdrawal as the Taliban quickly took power.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Some have placed the decline in confidence on a politicized Department of Defense. \u200dThe Center for Renewing America, a conservative policy organization, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/amrenewctr\/status\/1686381037235150849\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>, &#8220;Americans&#8217; confidence in the U.S. military \u2064is the lowest in 2 decades! Our &#8216;leaders&#8217; have tarnished the military&#8217;s history and legacy by putting\u2062 woke indoctrination before patriotism &#038; foreign conflict before American interests.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Recruitment \u2064Challenges\u2064 and Potential Force Reductions<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In\u2064 addition to declining confidence, the military has \u200bbeen struggling with recruiting. The Army missed its\u200c recruitment goals in fiscal year \u20622022 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2023\/05\/03\/short-handed-army-to-miss-recruiting-goal-for-second-year-in-a-row\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> earlier this year that it would likely miss\u2062 its goals again in fiscal year \u20632023.
