They found that the worms\u2064 are a member of a species unknown to science, which they named <i>Panagrolaimus kolymaensis<\/i>, after \u2063the Kolyma River site at \u200dwhich they were found.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists have \u2063been studying nematodes and how long they can survive via cryptobiosis for years.\u200d But until now, the record was 39 years before \u2063they were \u200dunable\u2063 to be revived.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the original worms \u200dbrought up among the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/scientists-make-ancient-discovery-hiding-beneath-ice-antarctica\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">permafrost<\/a> are really dead now because these creatures only \u200blive a few months at a time. But scientists bred the worms and are still studying the offspring of the originals.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers say that the key to their \u200blong \u2062sleep was \u200ca sugar called trehalose which protects them from dehydration.<\/p>\n<h3>So, why \u200bdo this?<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cThe astonishing discovery \u200bis \u2018important for the understanding of evolutionary processes because generation times could be stretched\u2064 from days to millennia, and \u200b<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/republicans-vowed-to-elect-more-women-they-did-just-that\/\" title=\"Republicans Vowed To Elect More Women...They Did Just That\">long-term survival<\/a> of individuals of species can lead to the refoundation \u2064of otherwise extinct lineages,&#8217;\u201d according to \u200da study, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/n7e397\/scientists-resurrected-an-extinct-animal-frozen-for-46000-years-in-siberia?utm_source=motherboard_twitter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vice<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are now comparing them to species from the same genus, which my team samples around the world,\u201d he added. \u200c\u201cStudying their genomes we hope to understand a lot about how these populations became different in the last 40k years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of \u2063course, we are also faced with another \u2062 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/scientists-pushing-us-past-point-no-return-genetically-engineered-fruit-flies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">question<\/a> here. Is it advisable to be reviving viruses, worms, and creatures that are long extinct? Is it advisable to re-introduce long gone creatures into a world not ready for them?<\/p>\n<p>Are these scientists sure that these previously extinct creatures\u2064 aren\u2019t also bringing back diseases or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/virus-decimating-global-chicken-flocks-jumps-first-human-leaves-dead-now-someone-else-showing-symptoms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">viruses<\/a> \u200c that we have no \u200bimmunity to withstand?<\/p>\n<p>The science of bringing\u2063 creatures back to life that were nearly dead for tens of thousands of years is very interesting, to be sure.
