Most people\u200b simply assume that they are inherently good.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a very interesting riddle, isn&#8217;t it?&#8221; Prager notes. &#8220;Most everyone thinks they&#8217;re a good person, and yet, there&#8217;s a fair amount of evil\u200d out there.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Prager argues that many \u2062people are able to overlook their moral shortcomings because, &#8220;We don&#8217;t assess our goodness by \u200cour behavior.\u2064 We assess our goodness by our intentions,&#8221; and, as\u200d the \u2064old saying goes, good intentions often pave the road to hell.<\/p>\n<p>Virtue is hard-won and often scarce precisely because people don&#8217;t prioritize it, according to Prager. While intent is insufficient, the first step to being a good person is aiming to be a good person, \u2064because, as Prager puts \u200dit, &#8220;You become what you want to be.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>Key Qualities \u2064of a Good Person<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Honesty:<\/strong> Barring exceptional circumstances, lying is generally a very bad thing. Once you start lying, it rarely stops at a\u2062 singular\u2062 lie. Being honest with others and with yourself is a virtue.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Courage:<\/strong> Recognizing right from wrong is useless if you aren&#8217;t willing to do what&#8217;s right. Doing the right thing\u2062 can be difficult or painful, but it is foundational to being a good \u200cperson.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Kindness:<\/strong> Gratitude\u2064 is a keystone of happiness and goodness. Ingratitude is a guarantor of meanness and bitterness. Treating all people with basic humanity, even perfect strangers, is a sign of goodness.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Responsibility:<\/strong> Good people take responsibility for their actions, support their families and communities, and are morally centered \u200caround proper values.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Morality:<\/strong> Cultivating goodness requires\u2064 a lifelong\u200d commitment and vigilant efforts.
