Several units were released in 2021 and \u20622022, and the\u200d remaining units\u2063 are \u200bscheduled for\u200d release this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEducators and liberal-leaning parents\u200d object to Hillsdale\u2019s curriculum, saying it\u2062 inserts a right-wing worldview \u200binto \u2063K-12 schools,\u201d the\u200d NBC article sock-puppets. \u200d\u201cThe American \u200cHistorical Association\u2062 has accused the 1776 Curriculum of downplaying racism, the Great \u2063Migration and the power of the Ku Klux Klan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The\u200b article\u2062 next quotes \u2064Grossman: \u201cWhat they\u2019ve done is they\u2019ve simply left stuff out\u200d in an attempt to\u2063 shape a\u200b vision of patriotism. What they also are trying to do is replace \u2062an approach to teaching that teaches\u2062 students how\u200c to\u200c think with\u200b an approach that teaches the students \u2064what to think.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">No Evidence to Back Racially Charged Claims<\/h2>\n<p>Yet in an email exchange Monday, Grossman could not substantiate any of these criticisms of the \u201c1776 Curriculum.\u201d Nor could he cite any part of the curriculum to substantiate these allegations of\u2064 educational and moral malfeasance.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-9d2ec6dd202dcfc8345dd877ec435e35 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-9d2ec6dd202dcfc8345dd877ec435e35\"><\/div>\n<p>Grossman provided three AHA links to substantiate NBC\u2019s claim attributed to his organization that \u201cthe 1776 Curriculum downplay[s] \u200c racism, the Great Migration\u2063 and the power of the Ku Klux Klan.\u201d Yet none of those resources mentions the \u2064Great Migration\u200c or the KKK. Some do allege there\u2019s not enough about racism in the \u2064\u201c1776 Report\u201d \u2014 an entirely different document\u2062 than the \u201c1776 Curriculum.\u201d In fact, all of the links concern the\u200b report and say \u200cnothing about the curriculum.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe 1776 Report\u201d is a\u2064 Donald Trump administration document. It was \u2063produced by an 18-member commission that included two Hillsdale professors, President Larry Arnn and graduate school Dean Matthew Spalding. It is not \u2064a curriculum. \u2062It is not the \u201c1776 Curriculum\u201d the NBC article uses AHA to lambast.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI suspect \u200dthat the reporter was referring to statements that I made with regard\u2064 to the \u2062 <strong><em>1776 Report<\/em><\/strong>, which provided the starting point for\u2063 the 1776 curriculum,\u201d Grossman wrote to The Federalist in his very first response (emphasis\u200c original). Then \u2064he went on to do \u2063the same thing, criticizing the <em>report <\/em>when \u200casked about the <em>curriculum <\/em>the NBC report uses AHA to disparage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe repeat over and over that they\u2062 are not the same,\u201d said\u2064 Hillsdale spokeswoman Emily Davis. She referred The Federalist to a public FAQ that \u2064states, \u201cNo formal connection\u2062 exists between the former president\u2019s 1776 Commission \u2063or \u2063\u2018The 1776 Report\u2019 and <em>The Hillsdale\u2064 1776 Curriculum<\/em>. The foundation of <em>The Hillsdale 1776 Curriculum<\/em> predates the 1776 Commission by decades and represents a culmination of years of forming and\u200d honing curricula at Hillsdale \u2062College and its affiliated K-12 schools. <em>The Hillsdale 1776 Curriculum<\/em> is\u2063 mainly the product of this work and the insights of\u200c actual teachers in Hillsdale Member Schools.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1d4307cbe6b4fa4872227e3860e80e03 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1d4307cbe6b4fa4872227e3860e80e03\"><\/div>\n<p>The curriculum lists \u200cthe \u201c1776 Report\u201d as a resource and\u200d quotes a\u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/president-of-el-salvador-high-immigration-to-u-s-is-bad-for-u-s-and-latin-american-nations\/\" title=\"President Of El Salvador: High Immigration To U.S. Is Bad For U.S. And Latin American Nations\">small portion<\/a> \u2063in a teacher resources section.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conflating Two Different Documents with \u2063a Similar Name<\/h2>\n<p>The Federalist asked Grossman \u201chow\u2063 the NBC reporter could \u2064have got those \u200ctwo criticisms from\u200d the AHA sources you suggested if\u200d those sources don\u2019t actually include two of the three criticisms\u2062 he listed?\u200d Are those three items actually an AHA criticism of the 1776 Curriculum (or report), or is the NBC report inaccurate\u2062 on that count?\u201d\u2064 Grossman\u2064 responded by \u200ccriticizing\u200d the report, not the curriculum:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>The 1776 Report has no mention of\u2063 the Great Migration, which is one of\u2062 most important social movements to shape 20th century America. There is on mention of the Ku Klux Klan, perhaps the most influential white nationalist movement in the history of \u200dour nation. It is not possible to understand 20th century United States without understanding the process and implications of the\u2062 Great Migration. \u2062It is not possible to understand the use of terror to\u200c suppress Black political participation and economic mobility in the United \u2064States without understanding the role \u200cof the Ku Klux\u200c Klan. Nor is it possible to understand the \u200dimportance, continuity, and culture of white \u2062nationalism \u200din the United States without understanding the Klan.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>When\u200d asked,\u2063 \u201cHas the AHA done any assessment of the 1776 Curriculum, as\u200b opposed to the report?\u201d Grossman responded,\u200d \u201cThis \u2063possibility is under discussion.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u20181776 Curriculum\u2019 Contradicts NBC, AHA Claims<\/h2>\n<p>The curriculum itself contradicts\u200c two of the allegations NBC sourced to AHA, and the third criticizes\u2063 a part of the curriculum that\u2064 doesn\u2019t exist \u2063yet. Two \u201c1776 Curriculum\u201d units relevant to the period of the Great Migration, when African Americans moved en masse from the South to northern cities, are yet to be released.<\/p>\n<p>As for the \u2064KKK, the curriculum mentions\u2063 it 32 times, including asking students to \u201cExplain the emergence of groups\u200d such\u2063 as the Ku Klux Klan\u2064 and the power that their intimidation of African Americans and Republicans had in \u2062diminishing the political participation of freedmen.\u201d\u200c It also recommends\u2064 teachers \u201cTeach \u2064students \u2063how Republicans passed\u200b and President Ulysses S. Grant signed into law the Ku Klux Klan Acts \u200bto prohibit intimidation of\u200c freedmen exercising their \u200dcivil rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Regarding slavery and racism, the FAQ notes, \u201cThe\u200c curriculum includes eight complete lessons on slavery, a unit\u2063 exclusively on equality in America, \u2064and mentions slavery over 2,000 times between kindergarten and 12th grade.\u201d The document mentions \u201cJim Crow\u201d \u206423 times, \u201cblack codes\u201d (a precursor to Jim Crow)\u200d 36\u2062 times, \u201cracism\u201d 22 \u2062times, and \u201ccivil\u2063 rights\u201d 260 times.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Laundering Far-Left Politics into Schools<\/h2>\n<p>AHA \u200dcriticisms of Hillsdale\u2019s scholarship have been repeatedly inaccurate, said David Randall,\u2062 a historian \u200band \u2064director\u2063 of research at the \u200bNational \u2063Association of Scholars. NAS has published many in-depth reports on the decline of American\u2062 history and\u200c civic education, which has coincided with the far-left politicization of\u2064 academia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe 1776 Report contains extensive coverage of \u2064racism in America. The racists \u200bof the left\u200d hate it because \u2062it \u2062draws a direct line between the racism of \u2062Jim Crow \u2062and the racism of CRT [critical race theory] and \u2063declares them both \u200dhorrific violations of America\u2019s foundational ideals,\u201d Randall said \u2063in an email to The Federalist. \u201cIn my professional opinion, the 1776 Report provides proper coverage of racism in \u200dAmerican history \u2014 and any educational material\u2062 on American history or civics which mentions CRT, while\u200d failing to identify it as a racist violation of America\u2019s foundational ideals, downplays racism in American history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Randall noted South Dakota\u2019s new\u2064 K-12 social studies guidelines that Hillsdale helped construct\u2063 accurately depict American history regarding slavery and \u2064racism.\u2064 Those curriculum guidelines include the Great Migration, \u200bmultiple discussions of racism in American history, and the KKK.\u200b The\u2063 AHA fought \u2064them \u2064vociferously.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe AHA is not a\u2063 disinterested \u2063arbiter of historical\u200b knowledge; it is a committed,\u2063 leading participant \u2063in the campaign to radicalize American history and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/minnesotas-new-social-studies-curriculum-would-racialize-first-graders-teach-high-schoolers-about-the-evils-of-whiteness-capitalism-and-christianity\/\" title=\"Minnesota\u2019s New Social Studies Curriculum Would Racialize First-Graders, Teach High Schoolers About The Evils Of \u2018Whiteness, Capitalism, And Christianity\u2019\">social studies education<\/a>,\u201d Randall said.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">AHA Repeatedly Engages in Partisan Politics<\/h2>\n<p>A look\u2063 at AHA\u2019s recent oeuvre bolsters that claim. The \u200dorganization \u200chas increasingly focused on political activism instead of \u2062historical scholarship. Its archive of \u201cadvocacy\u201d activity \u200cincludes four \u2063items in 2013; 13 in\u2064 2014; nine in 2015; \u206411 in 2016; 13\u200c in 2017; 16 in 2018; 23 in 2019; 41 in 2020; 52\u2064 in 2021;\u200b 37 in \u200d2022; and so far 25 in\u2062 the first seven months of \u20642023.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>While Grossman and\u200d the AHA \u2064criticized Hillsdale College for\u200c \u201ca public commitment to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/democrats-obstruct-plan-to-increase-funding-to-vaccinate-teachers\/\" title=\"Democrats Obstruct Plan To Increase Funding To Vaccinate Teachers\">partisan politics<\/a>,\u201d AHA\u2019s advocacy reflects the same. In 2023, the AHA advocated for admitting students to college based\u2063 on their race, demanded that \u200bFlorida allow teachers to discuss \u200bsexual orientation and gender identity with children, and supported teaching children in Alabama that all white\u200c people \u2062today are \u200bguilty for past \u2064racism against black \u200cpeople.<\/p>\n<p>Other AHA acts of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/historical-association-cant-keep-facts-straight-in-attacking-curriculum-that-celebrates-american-patriotism\/\" title=\"Historical Association's Inaccurate Attack on 'Patriotic Curriculum'\">partisan politics include\u2064 pushing genetic vaccinations<\/a> for Covid,\u2064 supporting \u200dRoe v.\u200d Wade, advocating for exposing children to \u200dLGBT \u200bactivism \u200cin school, and condemning \u200cTrump over \u200da records dispute over which the Department of Justice later raided the home of a \u200dformer U.S. president\u2062 for the first time \u2064in American history.<\/p>\n<p>The AHA \u2063has also promoted \u200dThe \u2064New York Times\u2019 1619 Project by way\u2062 of\u2064 AHA member Kevin Kruse, one of 1619\u2019s contributors. In 2021, Kruse was accused\u2063 of plagiarizing in \u200bhis Ph.D. thesis.\u200d His employer, Princeton University, dismissed the documentation in 2022, saying his accused\u200d plagiarism lacked \u201cill intent.\u201d Kruse is also known for using his\u2063 historian credentials to go after Democrats\u2019 enemies.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">To These \u2062Historians, Patriotism Equals Racism<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cThe Hillsdale curriculum is the \u2063red\u200b hat in textbook \u2063form,\u201d \u200cBinghamton University historian\u200b Adam Laats told NBC, referring\u2064 to\u2064 the \u201cMake \u2063America Great Again\u201d hats some\u200b Donald Trump supporters wear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHillsdale\u2019s emphasis on American exceptionalism, Laats said, appeals to people who \u2018worry that \u2063if kids \u2062aren\u2019t hearing that, they are doing \u200bthings like running off and joining\u2062 antifa and\u2062 burning down cities,&#8217;\u201d NBC\u2019s Kingkade writes.<\/p>\n<p>Kingkade has a history of attacking school\u200b choice \u2063and equal participation in education\u2062 politics from the right. On Monday, he knocked a new college \u200badmissions test \u200bpopular\u200c with classical schools like those Hillsdale helps start. In May, he went after a small-town Colorado school board run by conservatives who support a local classical charter school. In March, he\u2064 attacked charitable contributions to school choice.<\/p>\n<p>Kingkade\u200b also has defended LGBT chants of \u201cWe\u2019re coming for your children\u201d and librarians seeking to show gay porn\u2064 to kids.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-784959c7a375925119da277e7f8a4cc8 fdrlst__b89e9-after-post-content\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-784959c7a375925119da277e7f8a4cc8\"><\/div>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The AHA&#8217;s director failed to support NBC News&#8217; claims of racism and historical inaccuracy in a K-12 American history curriculum.
