As \u200ban environmental academic at UCLA, for example, Carlson\u200d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eli.org\/the-environmental-forum\/only-requiring-lifestyle-changes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published<\/a> a 2007 piece titled, &#8220;Only by Requiring Lifestyle Changes,&#8221; which argued that people\u200d would\u2064 not reduce their energy consumption\u2063 &#8220;voluntarily.&#8221; As a result, \u200bCarlson \u2063wrote, the U.S. government \u2062must &#8220;induce behavioral change&#8221; by implementing policies that \u2062&#8221;make the\u200c bad behavior more expensive.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In \u200ba\u200d similar 2009 <a href=\"https:\/\/legal-planet.org\/2009\/03\/19\/save-us-from-ourselves\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blog post<\/a> titled, &#8220;Save Us From Ourselves,&#8221; \u200dCarlson called on Americans to &#8220;use less electricity, take more public \u2062transportation, consume less, live more simply and so \u2063on&#8221; to fight climate change.\u2064 Carlson argued that most people &#8220;could\u200d benefit from a simpler life&#8221; \u200dbut will\u200d not \u2063&#8221;engage in dramatic \u200cbehavioral change unless forced,&#8221; highlighting\u200c the need for government intervention. &#8220;Governments and markets need to take steps to make us pay for\u200c the full costs of \u2062the \u2063behaviors in which we engage \u2026 they \u2063need to\u200b limit \u200cour infrastructure choices to energy efficient ones,&#8221; the \u200cBiden administration official wrote. &#8220;In\u200d other words, we need to be \u2062saved from\u200d ourselves.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Biden&#8217;s decision to tap Carlson to\u2064 lead its highway administration \u200dreflects the administration&#8217;s alignment with\u200b the environmental left&#8217;s most militant actors. While Carlson&#8217;s agency is traditionally concerned with traffic safety, Carlson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/biden-nominee-wants-hijack-little-known-agency-ram-through-climate-agenda\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">privately told<\/a> her UCLA\u200c colleagues that she would use her post to \u200cpush climate\u200b policies. &#8220;I view my appointment (and a number of others) \u200das evidence that the Biden \u200dadministration is truly committed \u2063to a &#8216;whole of government&#8217; approach to addressing climate change,&#8221; Carlson wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Carlson subsequently faced criticism \u2063from Republican lawmakers, who derided her as &#8220;an environmentalist\u2064 without traffic safety experience.&#8221; That criticism forced the White House in May to withdraw Carlson&#8217;s nomination to lead the National Highway Traffic Safety\u2063 Administration, though Carlson still heads the agency\u200d as acting administrator, a role she started in September 2022.<\/p>\n<p>The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration did not \u2063answer questions on Carlson&#8217;s past writings \u2064and said the agency&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-biden-knew-about-fbi-raid-like-he-knew-about-hunters-deals\/\" title=\"Trump: Biden Knew About FBI Raid \"Like He Knew About Hunter's Deals\"\">fuel efficiency standards<\/a> will &#8220;save\u2063 American taxpayers thousands of dollars on gas.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Beyond her writings calling on the U.S. \u2063government to force Americans to lower \u2064their energy \u2063consumption, Carlson\u2062 in\u200d 2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/legal-planet.org\/2014\/09\/16\/los-angeles-heat-waves-electricity-use-and-climate-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> it&#8217;s a &#8220;huge problem&#8221; to rely on\u200b air conditioning during heat waves, given\u200b that cranking up the A.C. pumps \u200b&#8221;more greenhouse gasses \u2026 into \u200cthe atmosphere.&#8221; In 2011, meanwhile, Carlson \u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/legal-planet.org\/2011\/10\/12\/climate-change-and-major-league-baseball\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bizarrely linked<\/a> a rise in temperature to\u200b more hit batters in Major League Baseball, arguing \u2062that climate change could \u2063therefore wreak &#8220;chaos&#8221; on the league.<\/p>\n<p>The National\u200d Highway Traffic Safety Administration&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/meet-the-biden-climate-official-who-wants-to-force-you-to-live-a-simpler-life\/\" title=\"Introducing the Biden Climate Official Advocating for a 'Simpler Life'\">proposed fuel efficiency standards aim<\/a> \u2064to compel automakers to\u200b ensure two-thirds of the vehicles they\u2063 sell are electric\u200d by 2032. The agency is not the only federal entity working to achieve\u2064 that goal\u2014Biden&#8217;s Environmental Protection Agency in April unveiled proposed limits \u2064on tailpipe emissions \u2063that are \u2064also aimed at forcing automakers to sell more \u2062electric cars.<\/p>\n<p>The\u200d United Auto Workers, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/from-powerful-unions-to-everyday-voters-bidens-gas-powered-car-purge-prompts-backlash\/\" title=\"Biden's Car Purge Sparks Backlash from Unions and Voters.\">historically liberal labor union<\/a> that endorsed \u200dBiden in 2020, \u2063has <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/biden-administration\/from-powerful-unions-to-everyday-voters-bidens-gas-powered-car-purge-prompts-backlash\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trashed those proposals<\/a>, arguing that\u2062 they will kill jobs and\u2064 prompt price hikes. \u2062The Alliance\u200d for \u2062Automotive Innovation, a trade group that represents the world&#8217;s\u2062 top automakers, agrees.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As \u200dproposed, the NPRM standards \u2026\u200b are neither reasonable\u200d nor achievable in \u200bthe timeframe \u2062covered in this proposal,&#8221; the alliance said in comments it\u2063 sent to the Biden administration in \u2064June. &#8220;Auto Innovators does not believe \u200bthey can be met without substantially increasing\u2064 the cost of vehicles, reducing consumer choice, \u2063and disadvantaging major portions of\u2062 the United States population and territory.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Biden&#8217;s electric vehicle push has not convinced Americans\u2062 to purchase the vehicles. Less than one-fifth of\u200d Americans say they&#8217;re very likely to make their\u200b next vehicle an electric one, an\u200c Associated \u200bPress poll published\u200c in\u200b April <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/energy\/americans-arent-sold-on-electric-cars-biden-wants-to-force-automakers-to-sell-them-anyway\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">found<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;We must save ourselves,&#8221; stated Ann Carlson, as she joined the Biden administration.
