A new analysis in the Centers for \u2062Disease Control and Prevention\u2019s (CDC)\u2064 Emerging Infectious Diseases (EID) journal says the disease could \u200bbe endemic\u2062 to the region.<\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1\" style=\"min-width: 320px; min-height: 50px;  text-align: center;\">  \t<script>  \t\tgoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1'); });  \t<\/script>  <\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot__ad-label\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>The authors\u2063 of the journal said\u200d that Florida has \u201cwitnessed an increased incidence of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/cases-of-leprosy-spreading-throughout-central-florida-cdc-says\/\" title=\"Leprosy Spreading in Central Florida, CDC Reports\">leprosy cases lacking traditional risk factors<\/a>,\u201d with trends contributing to \u201crising evidence\u2064 that leprosy has\u200d become\u200c endemic in the \u200dsoutheastern\u2063 United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cTravel to\u200c Florida should be considered when conducting \u200cleprosy contact\u200c tracing in any state,\u201d they wrote.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Despite cases of leprosy being rare in the United States, with only 159 cases reported\u200d in 2020, \u2063results\u2064 from \u2063the EID study found that central Florida accounted for the majority of those cases.<\/p>\n<p>A whopping 81% of cases reported in the state originated in central Florida, and about 34% of new patients between 2015 and 2020 appeared to have\u200b acquired\u2064 the disease locally.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cLeprosy has been historically uncommon in the United States; incidence peaked around\u200b 1983, and a drastic reduction in the\u200b annual \u2062number of documented cases \u200coccurred from the\u2062 1980s through 2000,\u201d the EID said in \u200bits report. \u201cHowever, since then, reports demonstrate a gradual increase in the incidence of leprosy in the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cLeprosy is\u2063 here in the United States.\u200d It\u2019s very low incidence and a very low endemic country, but it\u2063 is here,\u201d said Linda Adams, \u200cchief\u200d of the National Hansen\u2019s Disease Program (NHDP) \u2064Laboratory Research Branch.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>A 54-year-old landscaper was seen\u2064 at a dermatology clinic in Orlando for what appeared to be a painful spreading\u2062 rash\u2062 after several \u200dprevious doctors had been stumped.\u200d Biopsies taken by Dr. Rajiv Nathoo confirmed \u200chis hunch.<\/p>\n<p>Results from the biopsies came back positive for leprosy, a diagnosis \u2063he described as something \u201cyou read in your textbooks.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really rare still,\u201d Nathoo said. \u201cThese numbers are still\u200b relatively super low here. \u200cWe\u2019re not that concerned with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The\u200b slow-spreading nature of \u2064the disease, compounded by \u2063its extreme \u200brarity in the U.S., has hindered efforts to stop the spread of the\u2064 disease.<\/p>\n<p>The only way to diagnose the disease is through biopsies, but the CDC report said physicians \u2062can help identify and reduce the spread \u200dof \u200bleprosy by reporting cases and further supporting efforts to identify routes of transmission.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote data-service=\"twitter\" data-category=\"marketing\" data-placeholder-image=\"https:\/\/c3.oann.com\/wp-content\/plugins\/complianz-gdpr\/assets\/images\/placeholders\/twitter-minimal.jpg\" class=\"cmplz-placeholder-element twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Potential Leprosy Epidemic in Central \u200dFlorida \u2026.How\/Why is\u200c a\u2063 Biblical \u2063Scourge Coming to America\u2026. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/VPOyTTGfap\">https:\/\/t.co\/VPOyTTGfap<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Ln42r6WC6m\">pic.twitter.com\/Ln42r6WC6m<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Grace Chong \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\uddf8 (@gc22gc) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/gc22gc\/status\/1685286029027409920?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 29, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script type=\"text\/plain\" data-service=\"twitter\" data-category=\"marketing\" async data-cmplz-src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script> <\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Stay informed!
