All defendants wound up behind bars, according to an Associated Press review of sentences handed \u2062out to rioters.<\/p>\n<p>For example, during a sentencing hearing in October 2021 for Texas resident Matt Mazzocco, who pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge for unauthorized entry into the Capitol building, the judge described the recommended sentence as too lenient.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;If Mr. Mazzocco walks away with \u2062probation and a slap \u200bon the wrist, that&#8217;s not going \u200bto deter anyone trying what he did again,&#8221; Chutkan said. &#8220;It does not, in this Court&#8217;s opinion, indicate the severity \u2014 the gravity of the offenses that he committed on Jan. 6.&#8221; Ultimately, the judge sentenced Mazzocco\u2064 to 45 days in jail with an additional 60 hours of community service.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The judge has handed down two of the longest sentences imposed thus far on any \u200bJan. \u200c6 defendants. Last year, she gave Mike Ponder, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-media-outlets-that-gave-a-pass-to-black-lives-matter-and-antifa-violence\/\" title=\"The Media Outlets That Gave A Pass To Black Lives Matter And Antifa Violence\">assaulted police officers<\/a> at the Capitol, 63 months in federal prison, which tied the length of a sentence given \u200bto Robert Palmer, who\u2063 was\u2063 sentenced \u2062in December 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Chutkan was also\u2063 notable \u2063in the role she\u200c played during the House Jan. 6 investigation,\u2064 rejecting the former president&#8217;s efforts\u2063 to block White House records from being given to Congress.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>In rejecting his request, she wrote a \u2062memorable line from her ruling that &#8220;Presidents are not kings, and Plaintiff is not President.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The judge has also written\u2064 about how prison can be \u200ca powerful tool to diffuse \u200cpotential \u2063threats of \u200banother \u2062riot on federal grounds.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIt has to be made clear that trying to violently overthrow the government, trying to stop the peaceful transition of power and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/fbi-releases-10-videos-showing-most-egregious-attacks-on-capitol-police-officers\/\" title=\"FBI Releases 10 Videos Showing \u2018Most Egregious\u2019 Attacks On Capitol Police Officers\">assaulting law enforcement officers<\/a> in that effort is going to be \u200bmet with absolutely certain punishment,\u201d she wrote in one Capitol riot defendant&#8217;s case.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Chutkan also appeared to criticize one\u200d of her fellow Trump-appointed\u200c jurists without naming him. In a\u200b 2021 hearing, Judge Trevor McFadden suggested the DOJ was going too hard on some Jan. 6 defendants compared to people who rioted following the death of George Floyd in 2020.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cPeople gathered\u200d all over the country last year to protest the violent murder by the police of an\u200b unarmed man. Some of those protesters became violent,\u201d Chutkan said during an October 2021 hearing. \u201cBut to compare the actions of people protesting, mostly peacefully, for civil rights, to those of a violent mob\u200b seeking to \u200boverthrow the lawfully elected government is a false equivalency and ignores a very\u2062 real danger that the Jan. 6 riot posed to the \u200dfoundation of our democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>Trump&#8217;s Upcoming Court\u200b Appearance<\/h2>\n<p>Trump has been summoned to \u200bappear in court before Chutkan on Thursday\u2063 at 4 p.m. EDT in Washington, D.C., for his most recent indictment. He is facing four federal charges \u2062including conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction of and attempt to obstruct an official\u2062 proceeding, and conspiracy against rights, according to the indictment handed up Tuesday by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/hunter-bidens-best-friend-testified-before-grand-jury-about-the-biden-family-lawyer-says\/\" title=\"Hunter Biden's close associate testified before a grand jury regarding the Biden family, according to their lawyer.\">federal \u2062grand jury<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors say the alleged scheme included enlisting a slate of &#8220;fake electors&#8221; targeting several states, using the DOJ to conduct\u200c &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/donald-trump-indicted-assigned-judge-tanya-chutkan-known-for-longest-jan-6-sentences\/\" title=\"Donald Trump indicted; Judge Tanya Chutkan known for lengthy Jan. 6 sentences.\">sham election crime investigations<\/a>,&#8221; \u200denlisting the \u2062vice president to &#8220;alter the election results,&#8221; and doubling down on false claims during the riot in an effort to subvert the election and remain in power.
