(Photo by SAUL LOEB\/AFP\u2063 via Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>OAN\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oann.com\/tag\/brooke-mallory\">Brooke Mallory<\/a><\/h2>\n<h3>4:39 PM \u2013\u200c Tuesday, August 1, 2023<\/h3>\n<p>45<sup>th<\/sup> \u2064 President Donald Trump was\u2064 indicted by Special Counsel on\u200c Tuesday in connection with alleged \u200cintentions to overturn his election loss to Joe Biden in 2020.<\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1\" style=\"min-width: 320px; min-height: 50px;  text-align: center;\">  \t<script>  \t\tgoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1'); });  \t<\/script>  <\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot__ad-label\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>The allegations are the former president\u2019s third \u2064criminal indictment since launching his run for\u200c the Republican presidential nomination in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Special Counsel \u200dJack Smith handled the election inquiry as well as a separate investigation \u2062into Trump\u2019s alleged retention of confidential\u2062 papers at his Mar-a-Lago property after leaving the White House in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Trump was\u2064 reportedly charged with 37 counts \u200bin June in\u2064 connection with his alleged efforts to conceal such documents from authorities.<\/p>\n<p>However, Trump has adamantly denied any purposeful intention to hide documents\u200b and also maintains \u2063that\u200b he \u2063handed \u2064over Mar-a-Lago \u200dtapes to prosecutors in order to prove that there was no deletion of any\u2063 evidence.<\/p>\n<p>In a separate case, Trump \u2064pleaded not guilty and is expected to\u200d stand trial in May.<\/p>\n<p>According to the newest indictment charges against\u200c Trump, then-Vice President Mike Pence took \u201ccontemporaneous notes\u201d \u2062of\u2063 meetings with Trump as the then-president intended to stay in \u2062office\u200b until early 2021. Special counsel Jack\u2063 Smith received those recordings.<\/p>\n<p>The indictment \u200cmentions a meeting on January 4<sup>th<\/sup>, 2021, involving Trump, Pence, the vice president\u2019s chief of staff, and Pence\u2019s legal counsel.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cDuring \u200bthe meeting, as reflected in the Vice President\u2019s contemporaneous notes, the \u200cDefendant made knowingly false claims \u200bof election fraud, including, \u2018Bottom line \u2014 won every \u2064state by 100,000s of votes\u2019 \u200cand \u2018We\u200b won every state,\u2019 and asked \u2014 regarding a claim \u200chis senior\u200c Justice Department officials\u200b previously had \u2062told him was false, including as recently as \u200bthe night before\u2014 \u2018What about 205,000 votes more in PA than voters?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In the indictment details, Pence \u201cchallenged\u201d co-conspirator 2, an attorney who presented a strategy for Pence to reject or dispute seven states\u2019 Electoral College slates, possibly pushing the question of\u2064 which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/breaking-special-counsel-charges-trump-in-2020-election-probe-claiming-interference\/\" title=\"Breaking: Trump Charged in 2020 Election Probe for Interference\">candidates\u2019 electoral slates<\/a> would be valid \u200cback to individual states.<\/p>\n<p>According to \u200bEastman\u2019s own legal counsel, \u200bco-conspirator 2 is the lawyer John Eastman.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cWhen \u200cthe\u200b Vice President challenged Co-Conspirator 2\u2063 on \u200bwhether the proposal to return \u200bthe question to the states was defensible, Co-Conspirator 2 responded, \u2018Well, nobody\u2019s tested it before,\u2019\u2064 \u201cthe indictment\u2062 stated.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cThe Vice President then told the Defendant, \u2018Did you hear that? Even your \u200cown counsel is not saying I have that authority,\u2019\u201d it continued. \u200b\u201cThe Defendant responded, \u2018That\u2019s okay,\u200d I prefer the other suggestion\u2019 \u2064of the \u200bVice President rejecting the \u200delectors unilaterally.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Jack Smith claimed that the \u2062strike on January 6<sup>th<\/sup>, 2021, was an \u201cunprecedented assault on the seat of American democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the special counsel, it was \u201cfueled by lies. Lies by the defendant, targeted at obstructing a bedrock function of the U.S. government,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n<p>Smith also\u2064 appeared to \u200bdismiss \u2062previous protests, like those \u2063organized by BLM or Antifa, which resulted in far \u200bmore violence, fatalities, and\u2064 destruction to a number of \u200bcommunities, since they had no relation \u2063to Trump\u200d or his Republican\u2062 presidential bid.<\/p>\n<p>The\u2063 Special\u2064 Counsel spoke for around three minutes, and he refused to answer any\u200c questions.<\/p>\n<p>Stay informed!\u200b Receive breaking news blasts directly to your inbox for free.
