Meta,\u2063 the parent company\u2062 of these platforms, announced on Tuesday \u2062that \u2064it\u200b is\u2063 being forced to \u200bmake this tough decision due to what it calls a \u2064&#8221;fundamentally flawed&#8221; law.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Online News Act, passed by Canada&#8217;s leftist\u200b legislature \u200dearlier this summer, requires\u2062 Big Tech companies to negotiate agreements with \u2063Canadian \u2064news\u200c outlets and pay them for the news content shared on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/people-who-trash-their-family-in-public-cant-be-trusted\/\" title=\"Don't trust those who publicly criticize their own family.\">social\u2062 media platforms<\/a>, as reported by Reuters. Meta spokesman Andy Stone criticized the law in \u2064a tweet, stating that ending news access on their platforms\u200b was the only option.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Stone said, &#8220;Today we&#8217;ve begun the process of ending \u200cnews availability\u2064 in Canada. Changes will roll out over a \u200bfew weeks. As we&#8217;ve always said, the law is based on a fundamentally flawed premise. And, regrettably, \u2064the only way we \u2063can\u200d reasonably\u2062 comply is to end news availability in \u2062Canada.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This move by Meta and Google to block news access in Canada is part of a global trend to make Big \u2064Tech\u200d companies pay \u2063for news shared on their platforms.\u2062 Australia passed a similar law in 2021, and France and Spain also have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/meta-begins-removing-canadians-access-to-all-news-on-facebook-instagram\/\" title=\"Meta is now blocking Canadians from accessing news on Facebook and Instagram.\">social media news laws<\/a> in place, \u2064according to Reuters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The trend\u2063 is now reaching the United States, as lawmakers in California have advanced a bill mirroring Canada&#8217;s Online\u2062 News Act. Meta has threatened to \u2062block news in California if the bill, known as the &#8220;Journalism Preservation\u2063 Act,&#8221; becomes law.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Stone stated, &#8220;If the Journalism \u2063Preservation Act passes, we\u200c will be forced\u200c to remove news from Facebook and Instagram, rather than pay into a slush fund \u2062that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/meta-threatens-to-pull-news-feeds-over-californias-journalism-preservation-act\/\" title=\"Meta may remove news feeds due to California's Journalism Preservation Act.\">primarily benefits big<\/a>, out-of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/meta-threatens-to-pull-news-out-of-california-over-journalism-bill\/\" title=\"Meta may withdraw news from California due to journalism bill.\">-state media companies<\/a> \u2063under the guise of aiding \u200bCalifornia publishers. The bill fails to recognize that publishers and broadcasters put their \u2063content on our platform themselves and that substantial consolidation in California&#8217;s local news\u2064 industry came over 15 years ago, well \u200cbefore Facebook was widely used.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In Canada, Meta argued that news articles \u2063make \u200dup less than 3% of the content in users&#8217; feeds and claimed that news lacks economic value. However, Canadian \u2064Prime \u2063Minister Justin Trudeau strongly disagreed, stating that Meta&#8217;s\u200c argument was &#8220;not just flawed, but dangerous to\u200b our democracy\u200b and economy.&#8221; Trudeau also accused the social media \u200dgiant of being &#8220;deeply irresponsible\u2062 and out of touch.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Google also expressed its concerns about Canada&#8217;s law, noting that it is even broader than those passed in\u2062 Australia and Europe. The law can apply\u200d to outlets\u2064 that do not produce news.
