Lacks\u2019 cancer was \u2063said to be\u200d very aggressive \u200dand she died later that same year. <\/p>\n<p>Her cells became the\u200b first, and for many years\u200b the \u200bonly, \u201cimmortal\u201d human cells, \u200bmeaning they\u2019re able to reproduce indefinitely.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cThese\u200b cells was \u200ctaken from her body like she\u2064 was\u2062 a lab rat and an experiment, and no one even reached \u2062out to the\u2064 family to let them know,\u201d Kim Lacks, Henrietta Lacks\u2019 granddaughter, told WJZ.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Lacks\u2019 human cell line,\u200c known as HeLa, has lived on to\u2063 contribute to many medical breakthroughs, including the development\u200c of the polio vaccine, worldwide studies of AIDS and cancer, and much more.<\/p>\n<p>An assistant professor \u200dat Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, James Potter, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=SPLSp7Tf3bw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a><strong> <\/strong>\u201cHenrietta is probably, if\u200c not the most important, woman in\u2062 science and\u2062 medicine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, on Tuesday,\u2064 70-years after\u2064 Lacks\u2019\u200d death, her family reached a settlement\u2063 with Thermo Fisher Scientific\u200d over the use of her immortal cells. Terms\u2062 of the settlement will remain confidential. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cThe parties are \u2063pleased that they were able to find \u200ba way to resolve this matter\u200c outside of Court and will have no further\u200b comment about \u200cthe settlement,\u201d \u200dan attorney for \u200dthe family, Ben Crump, told WBAL-TV.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The family first sued demanding compensation in 2021. The biotech company tried to have the lawsuit \u2063thrown out on several occasions, arguing\u200d the statute of limitations had long passed.<\/p>\n<p>Crump said \u2064he couldn\u2019t think \u200bof any better present to\u2062 give \u2064Lacks on what would have been \u2064her 103<sup>rd<\/sup> birthday.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cWe are so happy \u200bto give\u2063 this present to her and\u200c her family to help define her \u200clegacy because this Black woman \u200dgave so much to the world.\u200b It\u2019s good\u200c to give her a present back on her birthday.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>While\u2062 Lacks\u2019 \u2064family said they\u2019ve received justice, they \u200bemphasized they\u2019re going to make sure\u200b Henrietta\u2019s legacy never \u2063dies.<\/p>\n<p>Stay informed!
