Vega\u2014who ran against\u200c Philadelphia district attorney Larry Krasner\u2014sued Real Justice PAC, King, and Krasner in \u200bMay 2021 for defamation\u2062 after King called\u2063 Vega\u2064 a &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/blm-activist-shaun-king-quietly-settles-defamation-suit-with-candidate-he-said-framed-man-for-murder\/\" title=\"BLM activist Shaun King settles defamation suit over framing accusation.\">real life supervillain<\/a>&#8221; and accused\u2062 him of framing a black man\u200b who \u2064was falsely convicted of rape and murder in the 1990s.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I previously posted that Carlos framed and convicted Anthony Wright \u200bof rape and \u2063murder in 1993 \u2064and that Carlos has lied about it for generations,&#8221; King, who served as a surrogate for Bernie Sanders&#8217;s presidential campaigns, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/Cqnsud4pVLE\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> in an April 4\u200b Instagram post. &#8220;I was\u2064 wrong when I made those statements.\u2063&#8221; Days later, on April 14, Vega\u2064 agreed to settle and dismiss the lawsuit, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/feds-seize-data-from-retired-four-star-general-who-now-works-at-leftist-think-tank\/\" title=\"Feds Seize Data From Retired Four Star General Who Now Works At Leftist Think Tank\">court filings obtained<\/a> \u200cby the <em>Washington Free Beacon<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The settlement marks\u2064 another setback for King,\u2063 who has\u200c faced \u2063allegations of financial mismanagement at his activist groups and of making false \u200dallegations in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/heres-the-demographic-makeup-of-the-jury-for-the-kyle-rittenhouse-trial\/\" title=\"Here\u2019s The Demographic Makeup Of The Jury For The Kyle Rittenhouse Trial\">high-profile criminal cases<\/a>. In 2019, King falsely identified\u200b a white man named \u2064Robert Cantrell as the possible killer of a 7-year-old\u2063 black\u200b girl in\u200d Houston. King \u2062posted a photo of Cantrell online and suggested he was racist. Two black\u200b men were \u2064later charged\u200b with\u2063 the killing. Cantrell committed suicide several months later.<\/p>\n<p>Deray McKesson, a former ally of King\u2019s in the Black \u200dLives Matter movement,\u200c also <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@deray\/on-shaun-king-351bd812318c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accused<\/a> King of committing\u200b fraud at\u200d his activist groups.\u200c The \u2063mother of Tamir Rice, a 12-year-old boy killed by police, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/06\/23\/tamir-rices-mom-rips-shaun-king-for-profiting-off-her-sons-death\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> \u200c King &#8220;robbed&#8221; her by holding unauthorized\u200b fundraisers\u2063 in her \u2064son&#8217;s name.\u2064 King \u2064has denied the\u200b fraud \u200dallegations.<\/p>\n<p>The Vega lawsuit has proved expensive for Real Justice PAC,\u200c which aims\u2063 to elect prosecutors to \u200d&#8221;reduce mass incarceration, police violence, \u2064and injustice.&#8221; \u200cThe \u200bcommittee has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fec.gov\/data\/disbursements\/?data_type=processed&#038;committee_id=C00632554&#038;recipient_name=levan+stapleton&#038;recipient_name=troutman+pepper\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">paid<\/a> $460,472 to law firms representing it and King in the legal battle with Vega. \u2062Facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitz and\u200b his \u200cwife, Cari Tuna, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fec.gov\/data\/receipts\/?data_type=processed&#038;committee_id=C00632554&#038;contributor_name=moskovitz&#038;contributor_name=philanthropy&#038;contributor_name=tuna\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">poured<\/a> more than $2.5 million into \u2062Real\u2063 Justice\u2064 PAC from\u200b 2017 to\u2062 2019, though\u200b large donations to\u200d the group \u200dhave dried up in recent\u2062 years.<\/p>\n<p>Real Justice PAC \u200dhas paid \u2064 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fec.gov\/data\/disbursements\/?data_type=processed&#038;committee_id=C00632554&#038;recipient_name=philadelphia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">other legal settlements<\/a> related to its work\u200d for\u2064 Krasner. In \u200d2019, the group paid $8,000 to the city of Philadelphia\u2063 after an ethics panel found Real Justice PAC made excessive campaign contributions to \u2062Krasner\u2019s \u2063campaign. Real Justice PAC in\u2064 December 2021 paid \u2064the city another $30,000 for legal\u200b fees related to\u2064 the investigation.<\/p>\n<p>The\u200c legal payouts are the \u2064latest example of \u200creckless spending by King\u2019s political groups. Grassroots Law PAC, which is affiliated with Real Justice PAC, spent $40,000 \u200clast year to purchase a thoroughbred show dog for King\u2019s family, the\u2064 <em>Free Beacon<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/democrats\/pet-project-blm-activist-shaun-king-used-donor-funds-to-buy-40k-thoroughbred-show-dog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>. King returned the dog months later, claiming it did \u2063not\u2063 get \u200calong with his \u200dfamily. Grassroots Law PAC has \u2063 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fec.gov\/data\/disbursements\/?data_type=processed&#038;committee_id=C00712109&#038;recipient_name=levan+stapleton&#038;recipient_name=troutman+pepper\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">paid<\/a> \u200d $257,790 to the\u2064 firms involved \u200cin Vega\u2019s lawsuit.<\/p>\n<p>Grassroots Law\u2019s nonprofit arm <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/democrats\/blm-activists-income-more-than-tripled-as-his-nonprofits-revenue-plummeted\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tripled<\/a> its salary to\u200d King in 2021 as the \u200ccharity\u2019s \u2064revenues fell more than 60 percent.\u2063 Grassroots Law \u2064paid \u200c$60,000 to King\u2019s media\u200d company to rent its email list.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Shaun King&#8217;s super PAC paid $75,000 to a law firm representing Carlos Vega, a former Philly DA hopeful.
