They\u200b argued that state law prohibits the removal of elected officials for conduct that occurred before their \u2062most recent\u200c election. They further argued that voters knew of his alleged misconduct well\u200b before he was\u2062 reelected \u2064to his \u2064current term, therefore he could not be removed from office.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cThe Articles allege nothing that Texas voters have not heard from the Attorney General\u2019s political\u2062 opponents for years,\u201d \u200cPaxton\u2019s attorneys\u2063 wrote. \u201cTexas voters rendered their judgement by re-electing Attorney General Paxton \u200dto serve a third consecutive term. As a matter of both\u200d common sense and Texas law, that should \u2064be \u200dthe end of the matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Paxton has been serving as\u2064 the Texas Attorney General since 2015, being elected \u2063to the post three times.<\/p>\n<p>The team of attorneys said \u200cthat the GOP controlled Texas House of Representatives wanted \u2064to oust Paxton because they were not able to unseat him by popular vote.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cUnable to defeat the Attorney General at the polls, the architects \u2064of \u2064the present impeachment\u200c caused the\u2064 House to quickly file and\u2062 pass twenty Articles of Impeachment\u2014in a mere three days,\u201d a spokesperson told \u200bthe \u200dDaily Caller News Foundation. \u201cThe allegations making up the\u2063 Articles contain unsupported, vague, \u200cand \u200dirrelevant assertions of non-impeachable conduct.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The\u200d one article of impeachment,\u200c that his attorneys had excluded from the filing was the allegation that Paxton had \u2063settled a $3.3. \u2064million lawsuit with former employees from\u200d his office. The former employees\u200b had sued\u2062 him for wrongful termination after\u2064 they alleged that they were dismissed for\u200c being whistleblowers\u2064 against\u2062 him. The funds \u200cthat were\u2063 to be \u2062used in the settlement were supposed to be drawn from public funds, which state Legislators had refused to do.<\/p>\n<p>The\u2063 request for public funds to settle the suit had prompted the investigation into Paxton by\u2064 the Texas House General \u2062Investigative Committee, which \u200bin turn led to the\u200d current impeachment proceedings.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Texas Tribune, the team of attorneys had slammed the \u200dHouse impeachment managers as \u201caggressive, reckless and misleading,\u201d they further accused them of having \u2062\u201clittle to no \u200devidence\u201d to \u2062support their allegations.<\/p>\n<p>The impeachment process has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/texas-ag-seeks-to-have-most-impeachment-charges-dismissed\/\" title=\"Texas AG wants to dismiss majority of impeachment charges.\">attracted national attention due<\/a> to the legal challenges that Paxton had brought against the Biden administration. Paxton had led the 2020 lawsuit, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/search.aspx?filename=\/docket\/docketfiles\/html\/public\/22o155.html\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Texas v.\u2064 Pennsylvania<\/em><\/a>, which contested the results of the 2020 presidential election and was\u200c considered by the\u2063 United\u2062 States Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p>The presiding officer of\u2064 the impeachment trial is Lieutenant\u200d Governor \u200bDan Patrick, who also serves \u2062as the president of the state Senate.
