Rufo, \u200c(July 2023, Broadside Books, Harper Collins)<\/i><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>Portland: A\u200d Hotbed \u200bof Radicalism<\/h3>\n<p>There are few places on earth where political radicals and their children ritualistically burn the \u200dAmerican flag and chant \u201cDeath to America\u201d \u2014 Tehran, Baghdad, Beirut, Kabul, Ramallah, and Portland, Oregon.<\/p>\n<p>The\u200c city of Portland, a grim and cloud-covered metro on the south bank of\u2063 the Columbia River, has developed a reputation for the colorful\u2062 sloganeering of its political protestors. Anarchists, communists, eco-fascists, and a variety \u200bof other agitators regularly denounce the police, politicians of both parties, and the American\u2064 state itself;\u200b flag-burning has become part \u200bof the regular syntax of the protest movement.<\/p>\n<p>During the summer riots in 2020, teenagers\u2064 associated \u2062with the Youth Liberation Front escalated\u2064 the rhetoric with chants of \u201cDeath to America\u201d and months of violence \u200dto avenge the death of George\u200d Floyd. Children as young as three or four years old marched with the crowd \u2064to the federal courthouse, raising the Black Power fist and chanting \u2062\u201cF*** the Police! F*** the Police!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The irony isn\u2019t difficult to identify: Portland is\u2064 famously the \u201cwhitest city \u200bin America,\u201d and yet it has become the \u200dheadquarters \u200bof race radicalism \u2063in the \u2063United \u200dStates. The \u200dcity has elevated white guilt\u2064 into a civic religion. Its \u2064citizens \u200bhave developed an elaborate set of \u200crituals, devotions,\u2062 and self-criticisms to fight the chimeras\u2063 of \u201csystemic racism\u201d and \u201cwhite supremacy.\u201d The ultimate expression of this orthodoxy is violence: street militias, \u2064calling themselves \u201canti-racists\u201d and \u201canti-fascists,\u201d are quick to \u200csmash the windows of their enemies\u2063 and burn \u200ddown the property of anyone \u200dwho transgresses the new moral law.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>The Radicalization of Portland&#8217;s\u200b Schools<\/h3>\n<p>It might \u2062be easy\u200c to dismiss this as the work of a few harmless radicals who are \u201ckeeping Portland weird\u201d \u200dand, for the\u2062 most part, represent a minority coalition of the malcontent and the \u200bmentally deranged \u2014 a quick glimpse through the Antifa \u2063mugshots released by the Portland Police Department will confirm\u200b this impression. But in recent years, the underlying ideology of Portland\u2019s radicals has become institutionalized.\u2064 The city government has adopted a \u200bseries of Five-Year Plans for \u201cequity and inclusion,\u201d shopkeepers have posted political \u200cslogans in their windows as a\u200b form \u2064of protection, and local \u200cschools have designed a\u200d program of\u2064 political education\u2064 for their students that resembles propaganda.<\/p>\n<p>The schools \u2063of Portland have self-consciously adopted Paulo Freire\u2019s \u201cpedagogy of the oppressed\u201d\u2063 as their theoretical orientation, activated it through a curriculum saturated in \u2062critical theory, and\u2064 enforced \u200cit through the appointment of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-child-soldiers-of-portland\/\" title=\"Portland's Child Soldiers\">de facto political officers<\/a> within individual\u2064 schools\u200c under the cover of \u201cequity and social justice.\u201d The internal documents from three local \u2063districts \u2014\u2063 Tigard-Tualatin\u200b School District, Beaverton School District,\u200c and Portland Public Schools\u2062 \u2014\u2063 reveal this revolutionary shift. Administrators\u2064 and teachers have combined \u2062theory, praxis, and power in service of Left-wing political activism.<\/p>\n<p>The results \u2062are \u200bpredictable. By \u200cperpetuating \u2064the narrative that America is \u2062fundamentally \u2063evil, steeping children in the doctrine of critical pedagogy and lionizing the rioters\u200d in the streets, the schools have \u2062consciously pushed \u200bstudents in the direction of revolution.\u2064 In the language \u2062of \u200bthe Left, \u200dthe political education program\u200d in Portland-area school districts \u200ccould be described as\u2063 a \u201cschool-to-radicalism \u200cpipeline\u201d \u200c\u2014\u2062 or, more \u2062provocatively, as\u2062 a training ground for child soldiers.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>The Tigard-Tualatin School District&#8217;s Radical\u200c Agenda<\/h3>\n<p>Tigard,\u200c Oregon, is a placid suburban city\u200c southwest of Portland. The city\u2019s historic main street \u200dis a pastiche of coffeehouses,\u200c boutiques, repair shops, and small-town restaurants. Historically, the \u2063city\u2019s political squabbles\u2062 have been focused on zoning and land use issues,\u2064 with developers fighting the \u2064city, preservationists fighting developers, and neighbors fighting one\u200d another \u2014 in other words, the typical political patterns of an\u200b affluent, predominantly white American suburb.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, the educators at the Tigard-Tualatin School District \u200bhave gone all in on radical pedagogy and the social justice trinity of \u201cdiversity, equity, and inclusion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, at the height of\u200c the George Floyd riots,\u200c Tigard-Tualatin superintendent Sue Rieke-Smith \u200band board chair Maureen Wolf signed a proclamation \u201ccondemning racism and\u2062 committing to being an anti-racist school\u200d district.\u201d The preamble to the\u2064 document recited the names of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor,\u2063 and\u200c Ahmaud Arbery, which has become a penitential rite in\u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/microsoft-encourages-employees-to-state-race-gender-during-presentations\/\" title=\"Microsoft Encourages Employees To State Race, Gender During Presentations\">social justice circles<\/a>, then confessed that the district\u2019s \u201cstudents of \u2064color, and Black students in particular, still regularly\u2064 experience racism in [their] \u2064 schools.\u201d To rectify this situation, the superintendent pledged to become \u201cactively anti-racist,\u201d \u201cdismantle \u200dsystemic racism,\u201d implement a \u201ccollective equity framework,\u201d establish \u201cpillars for equity,\u201d deploy \u201cEquity Teams\u201d within schools, create racially segregated \u201cStudent Affinity Groups,\u201d and use \u201can\u200b equity lens for all future curriculum adoptions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The following month, the district announced\u200c the creation\u2062 of a new Department of Equity and Inclusion and\u200b installed left-wing\u200c activist and critical pedagogist Zinnia Un as its \u2063director. Un quickly \u200dcreated a blueprint for overhauling the curriculum at Tigard-Tualatin schools. The document \u200bexplicitly \u200bcalled for adopting Freire\u2019s \u201cpedagogy\u2064 of the oppressed.\u201d Following Freire\u2019s categorizations, Un argued that the Tigard-Tualatin School District must move from a state of \u201creading the world\u201d to the phase of \u201cdenunciation\u201d\u2062 against the revolution\u2019s enemies and, eventually,\u2064 to\u200c the \u2062state \u200cof \u201cannunciation\u201d of the liberated masses,\u2063 who will begin \u201crewriting the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What is the solution \u200dto pathological \u200bwhiteness? \u200cAccording to\u2064 Un \u2064and the \u200cTigard-Tualatin School \u2062District,\u200b the answer lies with a new form of\u2064 \u201cwhite identity \u200ddevelopment.\u201d In a series of\u200b \u201cantiracist resources\u201d provided to teachers, the Department of Equity and\u200d Inclusion circulated a handout\u2062 of strategies for \u201cwhite identity\u200b development,\u201d which were designed to \u201cfacilitate growth for white folks to become allies, and\u2063 eventually accomplices, for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/east-coast-universities-conduct-anti-racist-audit-in-libraries\/\" title=\"East Coast Universities Conduct \u2018Anti-Racist Audit\u2019 In Libraries\">anti-racist work<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is an explicitly political project: at the\u2062 early stages, the district encourages students to \u2064participate in activities such\u2063 as \u201cattending a training, joining an allies group, \u2064participating in a protest.\u201d Later, white students are told\u2064 to analyze their \u201ccovert white supremacy,\u201d host \u201cdifficult\u200c conversations \u2062with white friends and family about\u200b racism,\u201d and\u2063 use their \u201cprivilege to support anti-racist\u200d work.\u201d At the final stage, the trainers plumb the\u2064 depths of the students\u2019 individual \u2064psychology to ensure\u2063 that pathological \u201cwhiteness\u201d has been banished from their psyches.\u200c Students must answer a \u200cseries of\u2062 questions to demonstrate their final commitment: \u201cDoes your solidarity make you lose sleep at night? Does\u200d your solidarity\u200d put you in danger? Does your solidarity cost you relationships? Does your solidarity make you\u200b suspicious of predominantly \u2063white institutions?
