(Photo by ROBYN BECK\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>OAN\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oann.com\/tag\/brooke-mallory\">Brooke Mallory<\/a><\/h2>\n<h3>11:31 AM \u2013 \u2063Tuesday, August 1, 2023<\/h3>\n<p>On \u2063Monday, the Los Angeles County Sheriff\u2019s Department made a\u2064 chilling discovery &#8211; a man\u2019s body inside\u2064 a 55-gallon barrel near Malibu Lagoon.<\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1\" style=\"min-width: 320px; min-height: 50px;  text-align: center;\">  \t<script>  \t\tgoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1'); });  \t<\/script>  <\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot__ad-label\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>According to police, \u200cthe barrel was\u200b first spotted by a maintenance worker on Sunday night, floating near the Pacific Coast\u200c Highway.\u2063 However, they were not able to open\u2063 it. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cThey \u200cgot in a kayak \u2064to get it and\u200c brought it \u200cto \u200dshore,\u201d said LASD Lt. \u2064Hugo Reynaga. \u201cApparently it was too heavy and they\u200b didn\u2019t want to\u200c open it, so they left it on shore.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Authorities\u2063 then say that a lifeguard \u200dcame to work on Monday morning and \u2064swam out to grab the floating barrel. He hauled it back to land, opened\u2063 the lid, and then made the \u2062shocking discovery.<\/p>\n<p>The Los Angeles\u2063 County Sheriff\u2019s Department \u2064was called at around 10:30 a.m. PST.<\/p>\n<p>The black plastic barrel \u200dwas reportedly seen standing upright in shallow \u200dwater, and a section \u2063of the \u200dbeach was shut \u200ddown soon after by police for the investigation, according to Sky5 video.<\/p>\n<p>There has been no immediate information \u200breported regarding \u200dthe victim\u2019s identity, however, a homicide investigation is still\u2064 ongoing.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities suspected\u200d that\u200d the body was not in the barrel for\u200b a long period of time prior to the discovery.<\/p>\n<p>Detectives also suspected that the barrel drifted into the \u2062lagoon from the \u2062ocean due to a \u200chigh tide.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This is a \u200ddeveloping story.
