Independents, comprising\u200d 45\u2064 percent, outnumber members of \u2062either party.<\/p>\n<p>However, \u2062many of these independents lean towards the Republican party. When factoring in the number of\u200d independents who lean Republican, 45\u200b percent of respondents support the GOP, compared to 42 percent who either \u200bidentify as Democrats or lean Democratic.<\/p>\n<p>The Gallup\u2064 monthly polls consistently show Republicans outnumbering\u2063 Democrats \u200dthis year, marking a\u2062 significant shift \u200bin party\u2064 identification.\u200d Since 1988, the trend has been more Americans identifying as Democrats than Republicans.
