Despite a decline in demand for \u2063its COVID-19 therapeutic\u2063 Lagevrio, \u200cthe\u2064 company managed \u200cto outperform analysts&#8217; expectations, who had predicted sales of $14.4 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Keytruda sales reached $6.3 billion, a 19% increase compared to forecasts of $5.9 billion. Gardasil, which prevents HPV-related cancers, saw a 47% surge in sales, reaching $2.5 billion, well above Wall Street estimates of $2.1 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Merck \u200bCEO Rob \u200cDavis attributes \u2062Keytruda&#8217;s\u200b success to \u2064its growing usage in the United States and \u2062internationally, particularly in \u2064the treatment of triple negative breast\u2062 cancer. Additionally, Gardasil&#8217;s\u200d growth in China has been a \u2062significant driver, with \u200bpotential for further expansion into male patients and smaller cities.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, Lagevrio sales plummeted to \u200c$200 million from $1.2\u200d billion due to decreased demand for \u200dCOVID-19 therapeutics amid low infection rates.<\/p>\n<p>Despite \u2062an adjusted\u2062 loss of $5.2 billion, or \u2063$2.06 per share,\u2064 primarily due\u200b to an acquisition-related charge,\u200c Merck&#8217;s performance exceeded analysts&#8217; expectations \u2062of a loss \u2062of $2.18 per\u2064 share. In the same period last\u2063 year, the company reported earnings of $4.7 billion, or $1.87\u2063 per\u2064 share.<\/p>\n<p>Merck&#8217;s recent acquisition of Prometheus Biosciences for\u2063 nearly $11 billion \u2062has positioned\u2062 the company to mitigate potential revenue loss as\u2062 Keytruda&#8217;s patents\u200b expire.
