Tom Brinkman, filed the lawsuit. \u2063In\u200d the document, \u200dHartman highlights that the amendment would eliminate Ohio&#8217;s &#8220;heartbeat bill,&#8221; which prohibits abortion after the detection of cardiac activity. It would also \u200dremove the prohibition on abortion due \u200cto \u2064Down syndrome,\u200d parental \u200bconsent protections, \u2062and safety regulations\u200c for abortion clinics.<\/p>\n<p>According\u2062 to Ohio \u200blaw, any constitutional amendment proposed \u2063through a ballot initiative must include\u200c the text of the statutes \u200dor constitutional provisions that would\u2064 be amended or repealed if the proposed law is adopted.<\/p>\n<p>Janet\u200d Morana, executive director of Priests for \u200dLife, expressed concerns about the potential impact of the \u200camendment. She stated\u2062 that Ohio has been an anti-abortion state\u2064 since\u200d before the \u200clandmark Roe v. Wade decision was \u200boverturned in June 2022, granting states authority over abortion regulations. Morana \u2064believes that \u200canti-abortion advocates \u2062view the \u200camendment process as an opportunity to\u2064 overturn legislative restrictions on the controversial procedure.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;This ballot\u2062 initiative in\u2064 Ohio \u200dwill wipe away every abortion law that protects babies \u200band\u2064 women in Ohio,&#8221; said\u200c Janet Morana of Priests \u200bfor \u2063Life. &#8220;It goes away automatically.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The amendment, originally \u2064drafted by the American Civil Liberties \u2063Union (ACLU), aims to prevent any state \u2064actions\u2062 that burden, penalize, prohibit, \u2064interfere\u2064 with, \u2062or \u2062discriminate\u2063 against\u2062 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/anti-abortion-advocates-sue-ohio-secretary-of-state-over-abortion-amendment\/\" title=\"Ohio secretary of state faces lawsuit by anti-abortion advocates over abortion amendment.\">individuals seeking reproductive health decisions<\/a>. \u2062These \u200cdecisions include abortion, contraception, and the choice to continue\u200c or terminate a pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p>While the state \u2063legislature can currently restrict abortion after \u200dfetal viability (typically around 22 weeks&#8217; gestation), \u2062the amendment grants the\u2063 patient&#8217;s \u2064physician the final \u2062say on whether continuing the pregnancy,\u200d regardless of \u2064gestational age, would negatively impact the mother&#8217;s health.<\/p>\n<p>One of the key concerns raised by anti-abortion advocates is that the amendment would eliminate parental\u2063 consent requirements.\u200c Janet Morana provided a\u200b thought experiment to illustrate this issue,\u2064 asking \u200cparents to imagine\u200b their 13-year-old daughter getting pregnant while in high school. Under the new law,\u2063 a \u200bschool representative \u2063would be able \u200bto take the daughter for an \u200cabortion without \u200dthe parents&#8217; knowledge,\u200c despite the fact that parental \u2064consent is\u200b typically required for\u2062 even \u2063minor \u200cmedical decisions.<\/p>\n<p>The ACLU states on \u2063its\u2064 website that while the majority of teenagers who choose to have an abortion do inform at least one parent, 22% \u200bof those who do not\u200d inform anyone \u200cfear being kicked out\u2062 of their homes, and 8%\u2062 worry about facing physical abuse from \u200dtheir parents due\u200d to their decision.<\/p>\n<p>Although LaRose validated the signatures to include the amendment on the November ballot, he has been a vocal opponent of the provision \u2062throughout his campaign for U.S. senator.<\/p>\n<p>During his campaign, LaRose has urged Ohioans to participate in the August 8 special \u200delection and \u200bvote to increase the required vote \u2064allotment to a 60% majority\u200d in order to\u200d pass a constitutional amendment through a ballot\u2064 initiative.<\/p>\n<h3>Click \u200d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\">here<\/a> to read more from the Washington Examiner.<\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Anti-abortion advocates in Ohio have sued Secretary of State Frank LaRose, seeking to nullify the upcoming constitutional amendment on abortion rights.
