They invoked the state&#8217;s &#8220;prior-term doctrine&#8221; in their argument.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>According to the\u200c court filing, 19 of \u200cthe 20 charges \u2062were accusations \u200cand alleged\u200c crimes\u2064 that voters knew about before Paxton&#8217;s re-election last year. They argued that the voters&#8217; decision to re-elect Paxton for a\u2062 third term should \u200cbe \u200dthe final verdict, both logically and legally.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3>The \u200bImpeachment\u2064 Process<\/h3>\n<p>The Texas\u200b House voted in\u2064 favor of impeaching Paxton with a significant majority of \u2063121-23 in May. However, his trial before\u2063 the state Senate\u200c is not scheduled to commence until September. The charges\u2064 against him revolve around his interactions with\u2063 real estate agent Nate Paul, a friend\u2063 and \u200cpolitical donor, and include allegations of bribery, abuse of power, and retaliation against whistleblowers.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Seven whistleblowers came forward to the FBI in 2020, accusing Paxton of wrongdoing \u2063in relation to Paul, who was under federal investigation for fraud.
