At a time when both major\u200d and minor crimes in Chicago are out of control and people feel unsafe, the state\u2019s leadership\u2063 thought it would be \u2063a good idea to inhibit citizens from exercising their constitutional \u200bright to own \u200ba gun, while simultaneously literally giving criminals a get-out-of-jail-free card by \u200bending cash bail, and now \u2062allowing certain illegal immigrants to become police officers.<\/p>\n<h3>Illinois&#8217;\u2062 Gun Grab<\/h3>\n<p>The new \u200blaw, enacted in January\u200d 2023, bans the sale of nearly 200 different types of so-called \u200cassault weapons, including the AR-15 and AK-47. The\u2062 law also bars the sale of magazines that have more than 15 rounds of \u200cammunition for handguns and more than 10 rounds of ammunition for a long gun.<\/p>\n<p>Illinois Democrat \u200cGovernor J.B. Pritzker\u200c gloated \u2063at the signing\u200d ceremony stating, \u201cIllinois \u2062now officially prohibits \u2062the sale and \u2063distribution of these \u200bmass-killing machines.\u201d \u2062But \u2062if only Governor Pritzker was\u2064 a student of\u2063 facts and not just someone afraid of scary-looking guns, he would \u200brecognize the ineffectiveness \u2063of laws like these.<\/p>\n<p>The data do not support those in favor of\u2064 more and\u2063 more gun \u200bcontrol. Only 12% of mass killings are \u201cmass public shootings.\u201d Most mass killings are familicides \u2013 \u200dmurders of family members or \u2062intimate\u200c partners \u2013 and felony-related killings \u2013 robberies or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/three-new-illinois-state-laws-prove-democrats-are-the-party-of-chaos\/\" title=\"Three Illinois State Laws Showcase Democratic Party's Disarray\">gang-related turf battles<\/a>. Mass \u200dpublic shootings account for less than one-half-of-one percent \u200dof \u200ball gun deaths every year.<\/p>\n<p>ABC News reports, \u201c\u2026there are only 20 \u200dmillion assault \u200drifles in the United States, a fraction of the estimated 400 million guns in the country.\u201d In 2019,\u2063 handguns were used in 62% of the nation\u2019s gun \u2064murders,\u2062 according\u200d to FBI data.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording\u2063 to a 2016 Survey of\u2062 Prison Inmates from the Bureau of Justice Statistics, handguns were \u2064the\u2062 most common\u200c type of gun possessed by federal and state prisoners. About 18% of the prisoners said\u200d they possessed a handgun, and 2% or less possessed a\u2064 rifle or shotgun,\u201d according\u2062 to ABC\u200d News.<\/p>\n<p>Criminals, by definition,\u200b do not care about\u200c the law. That is what makes them criminals. The same prison inmate survey found that only 7% of prisoners purchased their weapons under their own name from\u2064 a licensed dealer. More than half of prisoners had stolen the\u2062 weapon,\u200d found it at the scene of a crime, \u2062or obtained it off \u200cthe \u2062street or from the underground market. Furthermore, from August 1988 through August 2019, more\u2062 than \u201c85 percent \u200dof Mass Public Shootings occurred in gun-free zones.\u201d Criminals\u2063 don\u2019t care about the law, \u200dso gun laws will not\u200d affect \u2064them.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, although the law will likely be strictly enforced \u200bin Chicago, most Illinois county\u2063 sheriffs have issued statements\u200c announcing they will not enforce the law. More than\u200c half the counties in the state have passed resolutions, declaring \u2062themselves \u201c2nd\u200c amendment sanctuary counties.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And if our\u2062 leaders really wanted to save lives, shouldn\u2019t\u200c they be banning cars and\u200d trucks?\u200b 46,980 people died in motor vehicle crashes nationwide in\u200b 2021. By contrast, less than half that number\u200c of people, 20,958 died as a\u2064 result \u200dof gun violence. \u2063The right to bear arms is\u2062 guaranteed\u200d in the Constitution, the right to drive a car is not. It\u2019s a simple comparison, but it shows how politicians aren\u2019t \u200dworried \u200babout saving lives,\u200c they are worried about making headlines.<\/p>\n<p>The Illinois gun law does allow those who owned the now-banned guns and magazines prior\u200b to the \u2062law\u2019s enactment can keep them \u2026 but only if they are registered with law \u2062enforcement, effectively creating an Illinois gun registry.<\/p>\n<h3>The Elimination of Cash Bail<\/h3>\n<p>Not satisfied with disarming \u2062law-abiding citizens, Illinois also decided to become one of the only states to eliminate cash bail for people arrested and \u2062awaiting \u200ctrial for their crimes. Under the new law, called \u201cthe SAFE-T Act,\u201d Judges across Illinois will not require those charged with a crime to post bail in order \u2062to leave jail while they await trial.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors from \u200drural Southern Illinois to Chicago are concerned by a section of the law that they say appears to identify a subset of\u200b crimes in which the \u2063only reason a defendant could be held in jail awaiting\u200d trial is if there is\u2064 a high likelihood, they\u2019ll flee to avoid prosecution. \u2063Those crimes \u2062include aggravated battery, robbery, burglary, aggravated \u2062DUI, kidnapping, vehicular homicide, and all drug \u200boffenses.<\/p>\n<p>The Illinois Fraternal Order of Police opposed the law and called a recent decision by \u200cthe Illinois State Supreme Court \u201ca slap \u2062in the face to those who \u200benforce our laws and the people those \u200claws are supposed to protect. The court ignored the pleas of nearly every prosecutor in the state \u2064of Illinois, Democrat and Republican, \u200dthat the elimination\u2062 of cash bail will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/at-least-5-dead-50-injured-amid-escalating-violence-in-chicago\/\" title=\"At least 5 dead, 50 injured amid escalating violence in Chicago\">put dangerous criminals back<\/a> on the street, instead of keeping \u200bthem in jail or forcing \u200dthem to post cash bail as they await trial,\u201d\u2063 the group said.<\/p>\n<p>This policy will almost \u2064inevitably\u2064 result in more crime, with many examples of its shortcomings\u2064 in other\u2063 liberal\u200c cities. In Yolo County, California, the District Attorney\u2019s Office conducted a review of the re-arrest of people released \u200bfrom\u200c under the $0 bail initiative. The study found that more than 70% of those released were rearrested, with 29% of rearrested for a crime of violence including murder, attempted murder, kidnapping, robbery, carjacking, and domestic violence.<\/p>\n<h3>Allowing Non-Citizens to Become Police Officers<\/h3>\n<p>And\u200c now, the\u2062 brain trust in Illinois has \u2063decided that non-citizens can become police and arrest American citizens. Illinois \u2064House Bill 3751 was just signed into\u2063 law\u200d and\u2062 beginning January 1, 2024, will allow illegal\u2063 immigrants with valid federal work permits and DACA recipients to join law enforcement in Illinois \u2013 something that federal laws \u200ccurrently forbid. What could possibly go wrong?<\/p>\n<p>These three laws reinforce that the Left actually embraces\u200b violence and \u200bchaos, especially in Democrat-controlled cities like Chicago. Disarm\u200b the citizens and\u200c free the criminals.<\/p>\n<p>The Left \u200dknows the \u2063answer\u2063 to the gun crisis, they just don\u2019t like it. Reducing the number of criminal shootings requires authorities\u200b to enforce the\u200d gun \u200dlaws\u2063 that are in place\u200d rather than pleading them down, keep criminals in jail, eliminate \u201cgun-free zones,\u201d and expand the right for citizens\u2062 to legally carry a concealed weapon.
