The handgun had been reported stolen, according to its serial number.<\/p>\n<p>The fentanyl\u200c pills and\u2063 powder would have been worth between $320,000 and\u200c $400,000 on the streets of \u2062Portland, the sheriff\u2019s office estimated.<\/p>\n<p>The identity of an arrested suspect has not yet\u200b been released.<\/p>\n<h3>Months-Long Investigation Leads to Arrest<\/h3>\n<p>The bust was the result of a \u2063months-long investigation by the sheriff\u2019s Special Investigations Unit, which focuses on disrupting large drug \u200dtrafficking \u200band\u2062 criminal organizations.<\/p>\n<p>Investigators obtained a\u200b search warrant for a wanted man\u2019s car and apartment and watched him walk to a vehicle before taking him into custody \u201cat the opportune time,\u201d the\u200b sheriff\u2019s office said.<\/p>\n<p>The\u200c second biggest fentanyl bust the sheriff\u2019s \u2064office made happened last year when deputies\u200b seized 92,000 \u200bfentanyl pills and other drugs during\u2064 a traffic stop.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cOne pill can kill,\u201d the Multnomah County Sheriff\u2019s Office reminded in its press release.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Fentanyl, a \u200bsynthetic opioid that is cheap \u200bto make and \u2062easily transported, is about 50 times\u200d more potent than heroin and 100 \u2064times\u200b more potent than morphine. Because it is often cut with other drugs, users may often be unaware that they are consuming the powerful substance, which can\u200d be deadly even in small doses.<\/p>\n<p>As little as\u2062 two \u200dmilligrams of fentanyl weighing the same as a few grains of salt can cause a fatal \u2063overdose, according to the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA).<\/p>\n<p>In a public safety alert, \u2064the \u200bDEA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/alert\/dea-laboratory-testing-reveals-6-out-10-fentanyl-laced-fake-prescription-pills-now-contain#:~:text=It%20is%20a%20highly%20addictive,considered%20a%20potentially%20deadly%20dose.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> that \u2062six \u200dout of\u200c ten fentanyl pills \u2062the agency tests contain a potentially lethal\u2062 dose.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, more than two-thirds of the \u2064107,081 drug\u2063 overdose\u2063 deaths involved synthetic opioids, mostly illegal fentanyl, according\u2064 to the Centers for Disease \u2063Control and Prevention\u200c (CDC).<\/p>\n<p>In Portland, a fentanyl crisis is raging where \u2062multiple people can \u200bfatally\u2064 overdose in a single weekend. Over the weekend of \u200bMay \u200b12, police <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/local\/portland\/2023\/05\/30\/fentanyl-overdoses-rise-portland-oregon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> eight people died of suspected fentanyl powder overdoses.<\/p>\n<p><b data-stringify-type=\"bold\"><\/b><\/p>\n<p>As of May 16, Multnomah County had recorded 504 total drug overdose deaths\u200d since June\u2063 2022, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/local\/portland\/2023\/05\/30\/fentanyl-overdoses-rise-portland-oregon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according<\/a> to the Tri-County \u200dOpioid Safety Coalition.<\/p>\n<p>Portland, where many businesses operate, is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/portland\/2023\/06\/open-air-drug-use-is-at-an-all-time-high-in-downtown-portland-police-turn-to-citations-as-fentanyl-crisis-explodes.html#:~:text=According%20to%20the%20Oregon%2DIdaho,%2C%E2%80%9D%20said%20Portland%20police%20Sgt.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">notorious<\/a> for open-air drug dealing, public <a href=\"https:\/\/fox23maine.com\/news\/local\/downtown-portland-businesses-say-homeless-have-been-using-storefronts-as-public-bathrooms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">urination<\/a>, and petty crime. Foot traffic downtown plummeted during COVID and has remained down\u200c as businesses struggle from the \u200criots and pandemic lockdowns.<\/p>\n<p>Crime\u2064 has\u2062 also \u200d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/portland-businessman-targets-elected-officials-with-national-legal-initiative-over-covid-lawlessness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spiked<\/a> in Portland since the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Since COVID, shootings in Portland have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adn.com\/nation-world\/2023\/02\/10\/whats-the-matter-with-portland-shootings-theft-and-other-crime-test-citys-progressive-strain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tripled<\/a>, homicides have risen from 36 \u200din 2019 to a record 97 in 2022, and car \u2064thefts have spiked to 11,000 last year, up from 6,500 in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>The homeless population in Oregon at large, \u2062which comes\u2063 hand in hand with the drug addiction crisis, has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/politics\/2023\/04\/oregons-recent-growth-in-homelessness-among-largest-in-nation.html\">increased<\/a> \u200b by 23% in just two years, one of the largest\u2064 increases in the country.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Portland, Oregon authorities achieved a record-breaking fentanyl bust, seizing numerous pills and powder.
