Utilities in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/georgia-dem-switches-parties-absolutely-savages-radical-lawless-democratic-party\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Georgia<\/a>, Florida and Alabama are \u2062receiving\u200d the electricity.<\/p>\n<p>Nuclear\u200b power now makes up about 25% of the generation of Georgia Power, the\u2063 largest unit of Atlanta-based Southern Co.<\/p>\n<p>A fourth reactor is also nearing completion at\u200c the site, where two earlier \u200breactors have been generating electricity for decades. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission on Friday said <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/georgia-power-nuclear-reactor-vogtle-fuel-b652701435e0f74e229a6d2204ed1128\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">radioactive fuel could be loaded into \u2064Unit 4<\/a>, a step expected to take place before the end of \u200cSeptember. Unit 4 is scheduled to enter\u200d commercial operation\u200b by \u200dMarch.<\/p>\n<p>The third and fourth \u200creactors were originally\u2062 supposed to cost\u2063 $14 billion, but are now on track to cost their owners $31 billion. That doesn\u2019t include\u2063 $3.7\u200d billion that original contractor Westinghouse paid to the owners to walk away from the project. That brings total spending to almost $35 billion.<\/p>\n<p>The third reactor was supposed\u200c to start generating \u2063power \u2062in 2016 \u200dwhen construction began in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>Vogtle is important\u2062 because government officials and some utilities are <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/climate-business-environment-and-nature-bill-gates-nuclear-power-90689f06e1cf0271710e07e8b3ba8e09\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">again looking to nuclear \u2062power<\/a> to alleviate \u200cclimate change by generating electricity without <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/laid-off-keystone-xl-workers-blast-bidens-lies\/\" title=\"Laid-Off Keystone XL Workers Blast Biden\u2019s Lies\">burning natural gas<\/a>, coal and oil.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis \u2064project shows just how \u200dnew nuclear \u200ccan and will play a critical role in achieving a clean energy future\u2064 for the\u200b United States,\u201d Southern Co. CEO Chris Womack said in a statement. \u201cBringing this\u200c unit safely into service is a credit to the hard work and dedication of our teams at Southern Company and the \u200bthousands of additional workers who have helped build that future at this site.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Georgia, almost every electric customer will pay for Vogtle. Georgia Power currently owns \u200c45.7% of the reactors. Smaller shares are owned by Oglethorpe Power Corp., which provides\u200c electricity to member-owned\u2063 cooperatives, the Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia and the \u200ccity of Dalton. Oglethorpe and MEAG plan to sell power to cooperatives and municipal utilities across Georgia, as well in Jacksonville, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/cnns-expose-family-forced-flee-florida-epically-backfires-becomes-perfect-ad-state\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Florida<\/a>, and parts \u2064of Alabama and \u2063the Florida Panhandle.<\/p>\n<p>Georgia Power\u2019s 2.7 million \u200ccustomers are already paying part of the financing cost and\u2062 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/first-nuclear-reactor-built-from-scratch-begins-operations-in-us-now-powering-grid\/\" title=\"New US Nuclear Reactor Powers Grid, Built from Scratch.\">elected public service\u200b commissioners<\/a> have <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/business-georgia-atlanta-augusta-georgia-power-co-44dd6e5968cb58ac040fb97e8218b813\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">approved \u200da monthly rate increase<\/a> of $3.78 a \u2063month for residential customers as soon as the third unit\u200b begins generating power. That could hit bills in August, two months after residential customers saw a $16-a-month increase <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/georgia-power-public-service-commission-rates-bills-f907a05efb08717b39c45bd6f98b10c4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to pay for higher fuel costs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Commissioners will decide later who pays for the \u2062remainder of the costs of Vogtle, including the fourth reactor.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: italic\">The Western Journal has not reviewed this Associated Press \u200dstory prior to publication.
