However, San Antonio \u200dMayor Ron Nirenberg claims that\u2062 the state legislature \u2063has made\u200d issues\u200c much worse for \u2064Texans.<\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1\" style=\"min-width: 320px; min-height: 50px;  text-align: center;\">  \t<script>  \t\tgoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1'); });  \t<\/script>  <\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot__ad-label\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>Despite identifying as\u2064 an independent and running for office \u2064as a nonpartisan candidate, \u2064Nirenberg has \u2064been generally regarded as ideologically progressive, leaning center-left.<\/p>\n<p>In 2019,\u200d Nirenberg supported\u200c and defended the removal of a \u2064Chick-fil-A establishment from\u2062 the San Antonio \u2064International Airport concessions contract, citing a conflict\u200b with the company\u2019s opposition to LGBTQ+ rights and that the company\u2019s Sunday closure, done\u200d on religious grounds, hurts revenue.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re certainly grateful \u2062for a\u2064 president now that\u2019s treating \u200dthis heatwave with the urgency that I \u2063think is \u200dnecessary. Especially\u200d given the fact that one \u200cof the challenges that we have \u2062is, cities in Texas are fighting our legislature\u2064 and our state\u200c government for local control,\u201d Nirenberg\u2064 said on \u2063CBS\u2019 \u201cFace\u200b the Nation.\u201d \u201cWe\u2019re trying to protect residents and workers, and \u200dthey are doing everything they can to prevent that from happening.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Republican\u200d Texas Gov.\u2062 Greg Abbott signed legislation in June\u2062 prohibiting cities \u2063and counties\u200d from enacting laws that are\u200c harsher than state requirements, thereby overriding municipal ordinances such \u200bas those requiring water and\u2063 rest breaks for\u2064 construction workers.<\/p>\n<p>If the cities\u200d of Houston and San\u2062 Antonio prevail in their case, the legislation will reportedly go into effect in\u2064 September.
