Deborah Fisher, Executive Director of the Tennessee Coalition for Open Government<\/footer>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Deborah Fisher, also the director of Middle Tennessee State \u200cUniversity\u2019s\u2064 John Seigenthaler Chair\u200c of Excellence in First Amendment Studies, explained that there is\u200d no historical precedent for victims being able to prevent the release of public crime records.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In this\u200d case, the perpetrator is\u2064 dead,&#8221; Fisher added. &#8220;But\u200b if the shooter had \u200dgone to trial, most likely the writings of the shooter would be part of the evidence in the case about motivation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Fisher&#8217;s \u200dcomments come in response to a group\u2064 of parents and \u2062school officials \u2064who are attempting to keep the manifesto of the 28-year-old woman, responsible for killing three children \u200band three adults at The\u200d Covenant School in March, from being released \u200dto the public.<\/p>\n<p>While victims do have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/blocking-release-of-nashville-school-shooter-manifesto-would-introduce-new-equation-into-tennessee-law-expert-says\/\" title=\"Expert: Blocking Nashville School Shooter Manifesto Release Would Alter Tennessee Law\">privacy rights established<\/a> in Tennessee law, Fisher explained that veto power over crime records\u200b would be a new development.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There are a lot of reasons not\u200c to\u2062 think that there was \u2064ever any intention that there\u2019d be an unspecified kind of veto right \u2064of victims to prevent the\u200d release of public records,&#8221; she\u2063 said. &#8220;If the courts do conclude that victims have a\u200d veto over the release of crime\u2062 records, that would create\u200d a whole\u200b new\u200c equation\u200b in Tennessee about what the public gets to know about crime or \u2062even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/blocking-release-of-nashville-school-shooter-manifesto-would-introduce-new-equation-into-tennessee-law-expert-says-2\/\" title=\"Expert: Blocking Nashville School Shooter Manifesto Release Would Alter Tennessee Law\">possibly criminal trials<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Several news outlets, including The Daily Wire, have requested\u200d copies \u200cof the manifesto through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/nbc-news-reporter-suggests-open-records-laws-are-being-abused-to-expose-crt-in-schools\/\" title=\"NBC News Reporter Suggests Open Records Laws Are Being Abused To Expose CRT In Schools\">open records laws<\/a> but have been denied thus far.
