Blame for Election Chaos<\/h2>\n<p>The manufacturer of a large percentage of the ballot printers used in Maricopa\u200c County in November\u2019s election took the county to task for trying to shift blame regarding the chaos that occurred on Election Day.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/23888011-2022generalelectionbodreportfinal_r\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2022 General Election Internal\u2063 Review<\/a>, dated July 26, identifies the OKI ballot-on-demand printers malfunctioning at many of the 223 \u2062vote centers operating in the county on\u2062 Election Day as the primary\u200b culprit, with other issues, including the size of the print image projected on the paper, also contributing to the Election Day problems.<\/p>\n<p>In a Friday \u2063email to The Western Journal, a representative from the Maricopa County Elections\u200d Department said that 72 percent of the \u2064polling locations had OKI printers, 25 percent had Lexmark printers, and 3 percent had both types.<\/p>\n<p>The county\u2019s report stated that \u2062between 32 and 34 percent of the ballots printed\u2062 on Election Day were unable to be\u200b read by the tabulators at polling locations due \u2064to \u200bvarious issues related to the ballot-on-demand printers, but primarily due to the thickness of the paper used.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/suppressing-hundred-kari-lake-votes-malfunctioning-polling-place-enough-swing-race\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hours-long lines<\/a> developed at \u2063many of the polling as tabulators could not read the ballots being \u200bprinted.<\/p>\n<p>Republican National Committee lawyer Mark\u200d Sonnenklar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/kari-lake-bombshell-maricopa-official-makes-confession-happened-election-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">testified<\/a> at \u20642022 Arizona GOP \u2064nominee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/kari-lake-appeals-election-challenge-case-not-stopping\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kari Lake\u2019s election challenge<\/a> trial in December that his team of roving attorneys on Election Day found these problems occurred in \u2063132 locations, or about \u200d59 percent in all.<\/p>\n<p>The county put the figure\u2062 at 70 locations last fall,\u2063 according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/elections\/2022\/11\/13\/arizona-voting-problems-kari-lake-katie-hobbs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Washington Post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Given that Republicans typically vote <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-kari-lake-unleashes-heat-makes-1-fiery-promise-america-still-fight\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3-to-1 over Democrats<\/a> \u2064on Election Day and\u2063 the 17,000\u200d votes separating Lake and Democrat Katie Hobbs, Sonnenklar testified, \u201cThere\u2019s letter<\/a> to Maricopa County\u2063 Attorney Rachel\u200d Mitchell, writing, \u201cOKI was disappointed that we were not contacted during the investigation, or prior to \u2062the public release of \u200bthe report, to provide our input and feedback regarding the printers\u2019 performance during the election.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe strongly believe that common sense and reason dictated that, during the investigation, the investigation team should have requested an interview from the manufacturer to address the <a Therefore, the 100-pound paper the county utilized on Nov. 8 was \u201cwell out of spec for both the multipurpose tray and cassettes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The letter continued, \u201cAs a result, it seems that \u200cthe true underlying cause of the election issues was human \u2064error in the use of 100 lb.\u2063 paper \u2063without \u200breviewing the manual and\/or confirming with OKI that such use was within the specifications of the OKI\u2062 B432 printers.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-conversation=\"none\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">CAUTION: This thread is only for people who really want to go DEEP, like\u2026 into printer manuals.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s go back to Nov. County\u2019s was 100 lb <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Ue024ZINgJ\">pic.twitter.com\/Ue024ZINgJ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Jen Fifield (@JenAFifield) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JenAFifield\/status\/1684681466058584068?\">July 27, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cHad the County consulted OKI prior to\u2062 such use, the design specifications would have been discussed and alternatives could have been explored,\u201d company\u2062 said.<\/p>\n<p>OKI concluded, \u201cYour report is not only riddled with factual inaccuracies, but it can\u2062 now be used by OKI\u2019s competitors\u200c to discredit and create doubt in\u200b the \u200cminds of other election officials that rely on OKI printers, causing\u2063 great harm to OKI as it continues to serve this\u2064 important key market.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mitchell wrote\u200c back to OKI on June 1,\u200d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/23888042-oki-and-maricopa-letter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">explaining<\/a> that she didn\u2019t see \u200bthe McGregor report as \u201cplacing blame\u201d on the printers, \u201cbut rather that \u201cthe Election Department unwittingly pushed its\u200b Oki B432 printers to the limits of their ability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mitchell also sought to downplay the Election Day problems, recounting that only 16,724 ballots could not\u200d be tabulated at polling places due \u200dto printer issues \u200bof the about 250,000 ballots cast on November 8. They \u200cwere later counted at the\u200b central vote processing facility in downtown Phoenix, she added.<\/p>\n<p>Mitchell acknowledged that voters were \u201cinconvenienced\u201d by the tabulator\/printer issues. \u2063\u201cBut it is incorrect to suggest, as some have, that there was a massive failure of \u200dprinters at vote centers,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The county \u200cattorney also refuted OKI\u2019s assertion that the manual made clear that 80-pound paper was the maximum that could be used, saying under \u200dcustom settings, like the county \u200bemployed on Election Day, about 110-pound could be used.<\/p>\n<p>OKI <a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/23888688-oki-data-reply-to-maricopa-county-6-20-23-letter-signed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote back<\/a> to Mitchell on July 10, \u200dreiterating that 80-pound\u200d paper was the maximum that could be used for duplex printing (printing on both sides of the paper), saying\u2062 \u201ca more thorough review of the manual\u2062 (or\u200b consultation with an OKI representative)\u201d would have made that clear.<\/p>\n<p>In a Friday statement to The Western Journal, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/kari-lake-reveals-offered-stay-politics-2-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lake<\/a> responded to the printer \u200cmalfunction issue, saying, \u201cThe McGregor report was\u200c never an actual investigation. \u2063Their failure\u2064 to contact\u2064 Oki, the printer company makes that quite clear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a coordinated PR effort by Maricopa County to absolve themselves of any guilt in the catastrophic failure of 58%\u200d of the machines across their County on Election Day,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n<p>To clear up the issue, Lake wrote, the \u200bcounty \u201ccan \u200dstart with telling us why 4 \u2062of the 10 printers they tested suddenly began randomly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/lake-seeks-hearing-alleging-new-evidence-shows-majority-vote-tabulators-failed-accuracy-test\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">printing 19\u201d ballot images \u2064on 20\u201d \u2063paper<\/a> during their testing.
