The \u200brecent indictment from Smith brings the total \u200ccharges against Trump for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/new-federal-charges-same-dominance-trump-hangs-on-to-front-runner-status\/\" title=\"Trump maintains front-runner status despite new federal charges.\">improperly mishandling sensitive documents<\/a> to 40, up from\u200d the 37 federal charges that\u2063 were\u200b first unveiled \u200clast month. \u200dTrump is also accused \u2064of deleting security footage\u2062 at his Mar-a-Lago property along with maintenance worker Carlos \u200dDe Oliveira and\u200b his other \u2064co-defendant, Walt Nauta.<\/p>\n<p>If\u2062 the past is\u200c any indication, Smith&#8217;s latest actions will likely only increase\u2062 Trump&#8217;s \u2064poll numbers, bolster \u200bhis fundraising prowess, and maintain his lead over all \u2064other GOP presidential hopefuls. The former president has indicated he will not drop\u200c out of \u200bthe 2024 race despite his increasing legal woes. &#8220;It wouldn&#8217;t stop me,&#8221; Trump said Friday morning \u200cabout \u2063any possible sentencing. Trump has denied any wrongdoing, instead attacking Smith as &#8220;deranged&#8221; and \u2064deriding the \u2063indictments\u200d as &#8220;election interference.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On Capitol Hill, Republican lawmakers are once again coming to Trump&#8217;s aid. Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), chairwoman of the House Republican Conference, \u200cdefended Trump during a Fox \u2063News interview\u2062 on Friday.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;What\u2063 the establishment doesn\u2019t realize is this will strengthen President\u2019s\u200b Trump position, not only\u2064 in the \u200bprimary but in\u200d the general \u2063election because\u2062 it epitomizes the \u2062weaponization of\u200c these\u200d federal agencies\u200b and the Department of Justice\u2063 against President\u200b Trump,&#8221; Stefanik said. &#8220;They need to be reined in. \u2062And the reason why \u2062President Trump is in such a\u2064 strong position among many is he is uniquely positioned to drain the swamp.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>There\u200b may be some precedent\u2062 to Stefanik&#8217;s defense. After Trump was first indicted over the mishandling \u200cof the documents, his poll numbers were virtually unchanged, a strong indication of \u2062GOP primary voters&#8217; \u200dallegiance to Trump. A Quinnipiac University poll released last \u200bmonth showed 53% of Republican and Republican-leaning voters would support Trump, a 30 percentage point\u200b advantage over the next closest candidate, Gov.\u2062 Ron DeSantis \u2063(R-FL), who received 23% of voter support.
