(Hernando County \u200cSheriff\u2019s Office via AP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>OAN\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oann.com\/tag\/shawntel-smith-hill\">Shawntel Smith-Hill<\/a><br \/>4:06 PM \u2013 Friday,\u2064 July 28, 2023<\/p>\n<h2>A Florida Man Charged with\u200d Murder Decades After \u2064Girl&#8217;s Death<\/h2>\n<p>A Florida\u200b man has been\u200c charged \u200bwith murder on Thursday, three decades after the death of 12-year-old Jennifer Renee Odom, a Tampa-area girl who went missing after getting off a\u200b school bus\u200d near her home in Pasco County, authorities.<\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1\" style=\"min-width: 320px; min-height: 50px;  text-align: center;\">  \t<script>  \t\tgoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1'); });  \t<\/script>  <\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot__ad-label\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>Close to what would have been Odom\u2019s 43<sup>rd<\/sup> birthday, 61-year-old Jeffrey Norman \u2063Crum was indicted\u2064 by a \u200cgrand\u200b jury on charges\u200c of first-degree murder, \u2064kidnapping, and sexual\u2063 battery in connection to the killing, the Hernando\u200d County Sheriff\u2019s Office said.<\/p>\n<p>Crum had already been serving two life sentences\u200b after\u2064 he was \u2062convicted of sexual \u2062battery and attempted\u2063 murder in a separate case that\u2063 took place \u200cin Pasco County in 1992, according to state prison records.<\/p>\n<p>It was\u2062 Crum\u2019s conviction in this\u2064 case that made him a person of\u2064 interest, prompting an investigation where the evidence against \u200chim was substantial enough that \u2062the jury was able\u2064 to indict \u200bhim in Jennifer\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p>In \u200cthe separate case where Crum \u200bwas identified as a suspect through DNA analysis, investigators found similarities shared with Odom\u2019s\u200b homicide, Hernando County Sheriff Al Nienhuis said.<\/p>\n<p>After stepping off her school bus and waving goodbye to her friends, Odom was abducted. Her body \u2064was found six days later near a horse\u2064 trail off Powell \u200cRoad south of Brooksville, amid a cluster of pine trees\u200d in an orange grove. About \u206410 miles from where she was seen, in \u200cHernando County, it appeared \u2064as though she had been brutally attacked, Nienhuis said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not \u2063exactly sure how long her abductor kept her captive \u2063or when exactly\u200b the murder took place, but\u200c we are relatively confident\u2062 the \u2062murder \u2063took place\u2064 in that field,\u201d Nienhuis told reporters\u200b during a \u200bpress briefing. \u201cThe M.O.s in \u2062both cases were almost identical, with the\u2063 exception \u200dof Jennifer, who, as we \u2062know, was\u2064 abducted and found six\u2064 days\u200b later.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Over the course of investigation, thousands of pieces of evidence had \u200bbeen amassed\u2062 in order to try \u200dand \u2063find some clue that would\u200c point to who was responsible for \u200bOdom\u2019s murder. Several law enforcement agencies aided in\u2064 the \u2064search for a blue \u2064truck\u2062 that classmates of Odom\u2019s \u2064say they saw at the time she was walking away from\u200b the \u200dschool bus.<\/p>\n<p>The evidence gathered in the case had been retested several times in hopes that \u200cnew methods of identification would prove\u200d useful in giving investigators a \u2064lead. Despite\u200d COVID-19 \u2062giving a brief pause in efforts to \u200dsolve the\u200d case,\u2064 they remained persistent using a\u200c DNA procedure\u200c known as familial searching,\u2063 which allowed law\u200c enforcement \u2064to find Crum\u2063 as a suspect by comparing \u2063his DNA left at\u200d the scene with\u200d that of family members.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cDozens\u200b and dozens, \u2063maybe even hundreds of \u2062items, were tested and\u2063 retested every time a new technology came out, thinking that little glimmer of hope that we might be \u200cable to get that smoking gun,\u201d Nienhuis said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Nienhuis continued that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/suspect-arrested-in-tampa-bay-30-year-old-murder-case\/\" title=\"Suspect nabbed for 30-year-old Tampa Bay murder.\">biological evidence gathered overwhelmingly\u200c pointed<\/a> to Crum\u200b as\u2062 the number one suspect in the investigation, which is what\u2064 led to his arrest and indictment in the Odom \u2064case.
