Despite the country\u2019s ongoing \u200cviolent \u2064conflict with Russia,\u200c that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-myth-of-measuring-democracy\/\" title=\"The Myth of Measuring Democracy\">number doesn\u2019<\/a>t seem to be slowing down.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1717973162\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-9a99058d968ee0b08d3a6b89e4a88dab fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-9a99058d968ee0b08d3a6b89e4a88dab\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been trying to make the dream of\u2062 having our own child come true for 10 \u200dyears. It won\u2019t be the \u200bbombs\u200c or\u2064 the war\u200d that will stop us,\u201d one Italian couple seeking a surrogate in Ukraine told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2023\/jul\/26\/the-bombs-wont-stop-us-business-brisk-at-ukraines-surrogacy-clinics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Guardian<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>In Italy, much like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/which-countries-allow-commercial-surrogacy-2023-04-05\/#:~:text=Here's%20a%20look%20at%20surrogacy,prohibit%20all%20forms%20of%20surrogacy.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">most of Western Europe<\/a>, surrogacy is illegal,\u200d and the Italian parliament is on its way to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2023\/jul\/26\/italian-parliament-approves-bill-criminalise-people-seeking-surrogacy-abroad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">criminalizing<\/a> commercial surrogacy arrangements abroad. Where surrogacy \u2062bans and restrictions \u200bfail, however, \u2064shady \u200cand\u2062 exploitative Ukrainian fertility firms prevail.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/new-york-businesses-now-fleeing-to-florida\/\" title=\"New York Businesses Now Fleeing To Florida\">popular destination<\/a> for people \u2063looking to buy eggs or\u200d rent a womb because of its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/world-seeks-to-bypass-surrogacy-laws-by-renting-wombs-in-war-torn-ukraine\/\" title=\"World circumvents surrogacy laws by renting wombs in Ukraine's war-torn regions.\">lax assisted \u200dreproductive technology<\/a> (ART) laws and cheap labor. Customers mostly come from countries in Western Europe, South America, \u200dand Asia where ART\u200c and commercial \u2064surrogacy are heavily restricted, if\u200c not banned. \u200bBut \u200beven American couples who have access to one \u2064of the most unregulated fertility industries in the world seek \u200cthe help of Eastern\u2063 European companies and women to grow and deliver their babies.<\/p>\n<p>Conducting reproductive business \u2063overseas, however, is no easy task. As Politico <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2023\/07\/23\/ukraine-surrogates-fertility-00104913\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">highlighted in a report<\/a> this week, one California woman and her husband paid \u200d$10,000 to ship two of their\u200d embryos to Kyiv in an effort to\u2062 avoid <a href=\"https:\/\/money.usnews.com\/money\/personal-finance\/family-finance\/articles\/how-much-surrogacy-costs-and-how-to-pay-for-it#:~:text=When%20the%20path%20to%20becoming,services%20at%20Circle%20Surrogacy%2C%20says.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">skyrocketing surrogacy costs<\/a> in the U.S.\u200c The popular Ukrainian fertility firm BioTexCom confirmed it\u2062 received the shipment but\u200d quickly told 45-year-old Tanya that transferring the embryos \u2062to a rented womb failed.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-5a04d73dfb3013d8b607e869fa7d9cea fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-5a04d73dfb3013d8b607e869fa7d9cea\"><\/div>\n<p>When\u2064 Tanya\u2019s husband, who happened to be on business\u2062 in \u2064Ukraine at \u200bthe time, stopped in to ask questions, BioTexCom reportedly \u200b\u201cimmediately thanked him for donating\u2063 their embryos\u2062 to\u200b another couple.\u201d That was \u2063in 2017. To \u2064this\u200d day, even\u2064 after filing complaints with Interpol, Tanya and her husband still do not know what happened to their \u200cunborn babies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe unfortunate\u200d part is there\u2019s so little that we could do about\u2063 it, you know?\u201d\u2063 Tanya recalled in her interview with Politico. \u201cThat was \u200ca very traumatic\u2063 situation. \u2026 We\u2019re five\u2062 years down the road from the situation and I think I \u200donly came to terms with it about a year ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>BioTexCom, which is <a href=\"https:\/\/english.elpais.com\/elpais\/2018\/09\/27\/inenglish\/1538051520_476218.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported to \u200ccontrol<\/a> \u201cone fourth of the global surrogacy market and 70\u2062 percent\u2062 of the market in Ukraine\u201d and has more than 10,000 eggs in storage, denies Tanya\u2019s\u200b story, but\u200b her account is not the only tragedy \u200dborn of this\u2063 international babymaking business. \u200b <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Profiting Off Of Poverty\u200d And Pain<\/h2>\n<p>Ukraine\u2019s most popular surrogacy company \u2063is\u2064 plagued with allegations of exploitation, \u2062medical \u200cneglect, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geneticsandsociety.org\/biopolitical-times\/risky-business-company-behind-stranded-surrogacy-babies-also-promoting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">misconduct<\/a> that have led to the switching of babies at\u200c birth, deaths of unborn babies, \u200bsurrogate mothers, life-threatening early deliveries, and\u200c heartbreak\u200c for all\u2064 of the parties \u200cinvolved in the transaction.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-e5720a3a14cada86ac1235f2c33e8144 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-e5720a3a14cada86ac1235f2c33e8144\"><\/div>\n<p>Ukrainian agencies like BioTexCom prey on <a href=\"https:\/\/english.elpais.com\/elpais\/2018\/09\/27\/inenglish\/1538051520_476218.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">young,\u2063 cash-strapped\u2063 women<\/a> who\u2063 can\u2019t even afford to keep \u200btheir children\u2063 to birth someone\u2063 else\u2019s in exchange \u200dfor money. Some of\u200b these women, drawn\u2064 into\u2062 the industry by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/features\/2018\/9\/13\/ukraines-baby-factories-the-human-cost-of-surrogacy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">myriad \u200cof advertisements plastered on public transportation<\/a>, don\u2019t understand\u2064 why they have \u200dto give\u2063 the children up \u200dand ask their agencies\u200b if\u200b they can keep the baby they are carrying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a terrible thing when a grown person does not belong\u2063 to herself,\u201d one Ukrainian surrogate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/05\/03\/magazine\/surrogates-ukraine.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a> to the parents of the child\u200d she\u200d was carrying.<\/p>\n<p>One unforeseen disaster of BioTexCom\u2019s sale \u2064of outsourced reproduction was the \u200ccreation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2019-08-20\/ukraines-commercial-surrogacy-industry-leaves-disaster\/11417388\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cstateless\u201d babies<\/a> like Bridget. She was born\u200c to a Ukrainian surrogate in the early 2010s\u200b due to complications but was never\u2063 picked up by her\u200b American\u200d parents. Despite \u200cpaying \u2063big \u2064bucks to commission the child,\u200b the U.S. citizens didn\u2019t want to \u2062bring \u2062home a disabled daughter, which left\u200c her\u200d stranded at a children\u2019s home and\u2063 unavailable for adoption until the Ukrainian government chose to grant her citizenship\u2063 years\u2062 later.<\/p>\n<p>Even European and American parents who intended to pick up their children faced obstacles due to Covid-19. During the height of the world\u2019s pandemic panic, surrogates in Kyiv and its surrounding area <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/05\/16\/world\/europe\/ukraine-coronavirus-surrogate-babies.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">birthed, nursed, and cared for the marooned children<\/a> they \u200bcarried for months because the biological parents <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2020\/jun\/15\/the-stranded-babies-of-kyiv-and-the-women-who-give-birth-for-money\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">could not \u200btravel to Ukraine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Right\u200b when the Covid calamity began to die down, tensions between Russia and Ukraine flared up and made international travel into\u200c the area dangerous and difficult. Hundreds more babies were stranded and designated to the care \u2064of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/03\/12\/world\/europe\/ukraine-surrogate-mothers-babies.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cnannies\u201d as bombs destroyed the land around \u2062them<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Albert \u2064Tochilovsky, BioTexCom\u2019s owner,\u200d often deflects criticism about situations like these by denying allegations or blaming other fertility firms for his company\u2019s mistakes. Yet,\u2064 over\u2063 and over, \u2063investigations conclude that Ukraine\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/this-is-just-a-nightmare-surrogate-babies-are-stuck-in-ukraine\/\" title=\"\u2018This Is Just A Nightmare\u2019: Surrogate Babies Are Stuck In Ukraine\">surrogacy industry<\/a>, no matter how popular, is not physically, legally, or morally sustainable.<\/p>\n<p>Even Tochilovsky admits that his <a href=\"https:\/\/biotexcom.com\/ukraine-leads-in-reproductive-medicine-due-to-contributing-factors-not-technology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">top priority<\/a> is \u2064not ethics or even \u200bthe\u200d prevailing narrative\u2062 that\u200b he\u2019s\u2063 helping families\u200d have children;\u200c it\u2019s\u200b \u201cto prohibit \u2062the intervention of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/oregon-governor-encourages-people-to-call-police-on-neighbors-violating-covid-orders\/\" title=\"Oregon Governor Encourages People To Call Police On Neighbors Violating COVID Orders\">law enforcement agencies<\/a>\u200c into \u200cour work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite BioTexCom\u2019s scandalous track\u200d record, medical tourists flock to its headquarters with hopes of fulfilling their desires to \u2063start a family.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/04\/03\/health\/infertility-global-prevalence-who-report\/index.html#:~:text='This%20is%20a%20worldwide%20problem'&#038;text=Based%20on%20that%20data%2C%20the,%E2%80%93%20was%2017.5%25%20in%202022.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">increasingly infertile<\/a> world\u2019s yearning to commission children has either blinded \u2062them \u200cto the tragedies that\u2064 lie at the heart \u2063of Ukraine\u2019s womb rental service or numbed\u2063 them \u2064to it.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s\u200d a reason so many of BioTexCom\u2019s customers hail from countries where commercial \u2062surrogacy\u2064 is \u2062banned. The practice\u2064 is <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/03\/26\/big-fertility-harms-babies-and-women-so-why-are-we-celebrating-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">demonstrably harmful<\/a> to \u200dthe unborn baby,\u2062 the surrogate \u200dmother,\u2062 and the intended parents.
