Data \u2062shows between\u2064 the years\u200d 2010\u2062 to 2022 officials identified more than 110,000 cases \u2064across \u2063the U.S., but research scientists estimate the number may actually be \u200cnear 450,000.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cCases of AGS are not\u200b nationally notifiable\u2064 to\u200b CDC, so \u200cit is not\u2062 known how many cases of AGS exist in \u200dthe United \u2064States. Additional data and research are needed to understand how many people are affected\u200d by this condition.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>According to the<strong> <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/72\/wr\/mm7230a2.htm?s_cid=mm7230a2_w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">newly<\/a><strong> <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/72\/wr\/mm7230a1.htm?s_cid=mm7230a1_w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">released<\/a><strong> <\/strong>research documents, states with\u200c established populations \u200bof lone star ticks are the most\u200b affected. Other kinds\u2064 of ticks, however, have also been \u2062linked\u2063 to the condition.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ticks\/alpha-gal\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AGS<\/a> is a\u2062 serious, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/cdc-study-meat-allergy-caused-by-tick-bite-becoming-more-common\/\" title=\"CDC Study: Tick Bite Linked to Increasing Meat Allergy\">potentially\u200d life-threatening allergic condition<\/a>. It is not\u200d caused\u200c by an infection and symptoms can occur\u200d within two-to-six hours \u2064after people\u200c consume red meat or are exposed to other\u200d products made from mammals. It\u2019s also \u200cknown as\u2063 red \u2064meat allergy or tick \u2064bite meat allergy.<\/p>\n<p>Alpha-gal patient Bernadine Heller-Greenman told the Associated \u200bPress that \u200cone of the hardest things about making\u2064 the diagnosis is that\u2064 most\u200d don\u2019t know when the bite occurred.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cThe first sign was \u200da rash that I had\u2064 that I could never\u2064 figure out what it was from,\u201d said Heller-Greenman.\u200d \u201cA\u200b rash \u2062on my torso, my thighs, sometimes my thighs, sometimes my arms, but definitely\u200c my \u2064torso.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Other symptoms include: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hives\u200d or itchy \u200crash<\/li>\n<li>Nausea or vomiting<\/li>\n<li>Heartburn or indigestion<\/li>\n<li>Diarrhea<\/li>\n<li>Cough, shortness of breath, or difficulty breathing<\/li>\n<li>Drop in blood\u200c pressure<\/li>\n<li>Swelling of the lips, throat, tongue,\u2063 or eyelids<\/li>\n<li>Dizziness or\u200d faintness<\/li>\n<li>Severe stomach pain<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The studies co-author, Johanna Salzer, AGS can be a lifelong condition, but there are a handful of patients who \u2063have been able to reintroduce alpha-gel into their \u200ddiet while avoiding\u200c future tick bites.<\/p>\n<p>Health officials\u2063 say it\u2019s important to raise awareness that\u2064 AGS is affecting a large number of people in the U.S.. Salzer said sometimes it can be difficult to diagnose someone because of\u2064 the\u2063 inconsistency of \u2062the symptoms, but emphasized it\u2019s \u200ccritical for clinicians to be \u2063aware of the condition so they \u2064can properly evaluate, diagnose, manage \u2063and educate their \u2062patients.<\/p>\n<p>This could also make red meat the \u206410<sup>th<\/sup> \u2063most common food allergy in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Stay informed!
